OT: Plant slates Radiohead
Date: January 23, 2008 12:08

Robert Plant demanded a London bar stopped playing Radiohead, branding it "rhyming c**p".

The Led Zeppelin rocker dislikes the melancholy five-piece so much he asked staff at Camden's Fifty Five Bar to change the record because it was ruining his night.

A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Robert was drinking with a woman and didn't like the choice of tunes playing.

"Radiohead was on and he started complaining. He said, 'What's this rhyming c**p?'"

However, when staff put on the Red Hot Chili Peppers instead, the 59-year-old was still unimpressed.

The insider added: "The staff were obviously keen to please so they changed their music. They put on the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who they thought might be more up his street. But he didn't like their stuff either and said it was like a 'nursery rhyme'.

"He then said he wanted to listen to Captain Beefheart, an American musician who was famous at a similar time to Zeppelin from the 60s to the early 80s."

Captain Beefheart, whose real name is Don Glen Vliet, was a musician and singer known for his surreal lyrics and harmonica skills.

He is best known for Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band's 1969 LP 'Trout Mask Replica'.

This ia a great story! Kudos to Robert Plant for that, Radiohead is the most overrated band in history! If I were in a bar drinking with a woman, I also wouldn't like to listen to that stuff, it's a stamina-killer.

I wonder which Red Hot Chili Peppers record they've eventually put on, since there are nasty ones but also very good ones as well.

Radiohead make some great songs, but can be listened only one at the time, once in a while. A full album is quite depressive!

I am!

I know Radiohead are loved but all that 'wobbly eye aint I complicated' mumbojumbo by Thom Yorke gets my goat.

When I go to a bar and I don't like the music I have to change bars. Cool for him.

I liked the first album and The Bends but it all went a bit Pink Floyd afterwards...

Glad so many other people here also reckon Radiohead to be overrated. It really is music for bedwetters and students. They are trying for that Pink Floyd atmospheric early 70s thing but their recent music is on the whole soulless white boy rock.

Teenage Fan Club on the other hand are brilliant. Grand Prix is a work of genius.

such an overlooked and under appreciated band. god... i love them.

Grand Prix is close to pop- perfection, but all their albums hit the spot.

I never did get the fuss behind OK Computer. I thought it was whiny woe-is-me bollocks. I quite liked a couple of their songs off The Bends. Then Kid A came along. I bought it because it got a great rating in The Source - a hiphop magazine (back when I still liked hiphop). Kid A's great. Sounds nothing like OK Computer. I tried the follow-up album and it was bollocks too, so I haven't bothered with them since.

I just like "Just" off "The Bends" and "15 Step" off their latest release.

Well, I'm truly shocked. If this had been U2 a good third of the bard would have come out and said Plant was a deaf old hippy who should go back to writing about hobbits and goblins. Radiohead seem to have united everyone in loathing. I actually think Coldplay are way worse, but that's just me.

whats wrong with captain beefheart?

the crafty newer jukeboxes around here will charge $1.00 for a play if the song has to be downloaded online (the regular stuff - radiohead, rhcp available for a quarter a play). so yes beefheart can be played for buck a track - thats like going out and buying the cd.

great thread guys. i learned about some new bands here.

btw - ok computer and broken i got. i wouldn't call it rock per se. liked how they are pushing the commercial game into new areas via free albums, etc. but the sonic material hears fluffy.

Lucky him that it wasn´t the Stones he slated, then we would have seen burning Robert Plant dolls on the streets...

Chris Martin, does tend to whine-on, repeatedly, about trees and seas,
thats for sure.

Hi , Led Zep/Plant is cool , some of Chilli Peppers music is cool IMO , maybee too old for Radiohead , know nothing about Captain Beefheart , but it sound interesting with the harmonica played the Captain . Someone said something about Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band's 1969 LP 'Trout Mask Replica' , but if you only want one is this the album to buy ? ? It "only" got 4 stars on amazon and Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller): 2006 Remaster got 5 !? ( Can you trust the stars ? ) confused smiley
