even though it dosn't matter to me - I'd still like her music even if it hadn't made any charts.
but good, she gets the recognition she deserves.

True dat. My wife's a huge fan - in fact, it was her who got me into Amy Winehouse (I've never been able to get into any music I like - took her to see Bruce at the O2 and she spent most of the time laughing at the middle aged blokes in the audience playing air guitar ("That'll be you in ten years", she said)).

I'm a big fan of Amy's. I hate what she's doing to herself, but she's had a lot foisted on her from a very early age. People respond to pressure differently: they either ride it or get trampled by it. And then some people are pre-disposed to self-destruct. "The flame that burns twice as long, burns half as long" and all that.

Now, those of you who've read my usual demolitions of Pete Docherty will probably cry foul about now and say that Amy's no different. Actually she is. She's very talented, for a start. And you don't see her doing interviews every time she shoots up and comes out of rehab (no, no, no). In short - Pete Docherty takes drugs in public and turns it into a performance. He's a needy narcissist (and an accessory to murder). Amy Winehouse is self-medicating because she can't stand the pressure and has self-esteem issues. Won't be the first or the last.

I'm with you on that one - still, I cannot help looking at the charts anyways ;-)

And in this particular case I think it is rewarding because this is not some computerized shit, done in a studio by a couple of nerds and with some dumb female singer to front it.

If she could only get her personal demons somewhat under control, she could be a major musical force for the next many years.

Let's drink to that ;-)

I was just listening to X-pensive Winos, Main Offender and thought...

yeah, Amy should cover Keith's Hate It When You Leave.

the music would fit her bill perfectly.
- it's got the motown touch
- the lyrics would fit about her jailed husband
- X-pensive Winehouse winking smiley

she certainly has got the voice and soul for that one - what do youse think?

Winehouse to headline the Grammys

By WENN world entertainment news - Thursday, January 3 01:10 pm

Singer Amy Winehouse is reportedly set to make her comeback by headlining the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles next month.

The Rehab hitmaker has taken a month off work to recuperate following the cancellation of her U.K. tour last month and the jailing of her husband Blake Fielder-Civil, but will return to the stage at the prestigious ceremony on 10 February.

A source tells the Daily Mirror, "Amy is really excited to be asked to perform at the Grammys. It's a huge event.

"She's planning to do some sort of soul and Motown medley, and is even weighing up the possibility of a duet with some U.S. stars - particularly Kanye West, who has spoken in the past of wanting to work with her.

"The only potential problem is that Amy will need a U.S. visa, so she is hoping that her recent arrest won't cause any problems."

Winehouse has been nominated in six categories at this year's awards ceremony, including Album Of The Year and Best New Artist

Yeah, obviously she signed some paper, pleading guilty to the charge to be let free of the Norwegian jail.

Now she is reportedly contending the charge, seeking to be cleared of all charges in order to secure her a USA visa .... or so the newspapers would have it ;-)

Yeah, I had something like that up the neck, until I had a look at the dates^^

"In 2008 the 50th Grammy Awards will take place on February 10 again at the Staples Center. Nominations were announced on December 6, 2007."
source wiki

"She will appear before the court on February 29 to launch her appeal, Bergen police said."

hopefully some management did their jobs.

The story I read had no mention of the Grammy's - just a general wish on her behalf to have a "clean sheet". Remember all the trouble Jagger went through in the 70's and the 80's because of one conditioned charge (the four pills from the redlands bust?? As I write this I'm in doubt as to whether he and Faithfull were not busted again on a later hash-charge??)

Weeell - anyhow, now that the Stones don't have these sort of problems hanging over their heads anymore, they could perhaps give Amy a loan of their lawyers? They should be well versed in such matters ;-)

Her voice reminds me of Billy Holliday..
Didn't she end up at the scrap heap due her heroin addiction ?

Um, he's not that far off. She died of cirrhosis of the liver, which was caused by excessive drinking and drugging (heroin, mostly). See [en.wikipedia.org]

Keith Richards and the X-pensive Winehouse ... it has a certain ring to it. Good one, open-g!

She's not a genius, Mr GB, BUT she is massively talented.

You know her backing band, The Dap Kings? They also record with the great and highly undervalued Sharon Jones. I recommend you check out her/their 100 Days, 100 Nights album which cane out last year.

Just got her DVD - "I Told You I Was Trouble" - and though she seems to be on something a little stronger than tap water, it is an absolute delight!!

Her singing is strong throughout and her choice of covers impeccable thumbs up

no.
Amy Winehouse is not a genius.
She's a talented singer/songwriter, who has cleverly hooked up with
a decent young producer.
Her cover of Valerie, irks me, somewhat. It's a poor version of a very good song.
its not a shade on the original, imo.
As far as 21st female singer/songwriters are concerned, give me
Aimee Mann or Maria McKee, anytime. Far superior to Amy Winehouse, imo.
...but there again, these two songwriting greats, don't have headlinegrabbing smack addictions, so you may well be unfamiliar with they're impressive bodies of work....(or am i just being miserable and uber cynical?)

Keep an eye (and an ear) open, for new upcoming talent, Duffy.
I've mentioned her, on here before, and posted youtube links to afew of her tracks. her debut album is out soon.....she's going to be huge.

...and she hasn't got a smack habit, or a prick of a husband, or a social circle that includes no-talent leeches, like Kelly Osborne, Kate Moss or Sadie Frost.
(yet).

hmm, well you do sound a little like that...

there is no need for rivalry and competition.
in fact, it's good to hear new upcoming talents.

btw, Amy doesn't have a >>smack>> addiction, as far as I know.
probably something else though.
