Albums of the year 2006

Well, fellow Iorr men and women, a new musical year is upon us. A lot of great albums were released and since I've bought a lot of cd's after reading reviews here, I'm curious to know what your favourite albums of 2006 are.

Mine are Modern Times, Nashville (Burke) & Broken Boy Soldier (Raconteurs)

Modern Times. This album is so mellow, but it gets me fired up every time I listen to it.

The Killer's release and Ray LaMontagne's sophomore effort are worthy candidates, along with Bob's.....

I think the Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not was really strong. It looks like it peaked on the US charts at number 24, which is a shame, but given that it also looks as though they didn't realease any of the songs as singles, maybe that's not too bad. I think us Yanks collectively missed the boat on that one. Not me though!

They were playing The Killers' Sam's Town in the music store I was in the other day, and the 3 or 4 tracks I heard (other than the hit "When You Were Young") I thought were pretty good. So, I'd say that's a pretty strong album. Speaking of When You Were Young, they played on the Jimmy Kimmel show (here in the States) when the album was released & I thought it kicked a little ass! Here it is.

A couple of observations about the clip. The lead singer reminds me of Arnie from What's Eating Gilbert Grape at about the 2:46 mark. The drummer looks like Jason Lee, as Earl, in the US sitcom My Name is Earl.

Best album released this year was recorded 36 years ago:

NRBQ Ludlow Garage 1970

A live album so alive to the magic, sense of wonder, and infinite possibilities of music that it just takes your breath away.

To agree with me, all you have to do is hear it.

Forgot about that one. Great album, especially like "Fake Tales Of San Fransico".

CASH - American V
Back to the quality level of American I (and the first disc of the Unearthed set)

I may be the only person alive who thinks so, but thought the Bob disc quite overrated. All the up-tempo songs sound like the same song, to me.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (Will Oldham) had two releases this year, including a live one, that were excellent. But I think my top album of 2006 is MWard's 'Post War.' It is simply a brilliant release, a great match for his previous 'Transistor Radio'. I also liked Cat Power's album.

Dylan's album seemed to me to be yet another addendum to his last couple of albums, long mellow songs that ramble a bit too much, imo, but I do (at least somewhat) like the material.

I also really liked Tom Waits 3cd collection that came out last month. Liked the Raconteurs album too, but did not find it really broke ground musically, but rather recalled a 70's (LZep, etc) rock feel a LOT!! I like Jack White's stuff in recent years quite a bit.

I gotta admit that I have heard only a few of 2006 albums since most of the music I buy is the old stuff.Out of those that I heard the best ones are Springsteen's We shall overcome and Dylan's Modern times.Arctic Monkeys are just okayish,it gets boring after a few listens,The Killers' Sam's town is so so but it has got some excellent songs like the title cut and When you were young which is a kick-ass song with melody probably stolen from some Springsteen song, but I cannot recall which one.Howe Gelb's got a fine album as well.If you are into singer-songwritter stuff, get Nina Nastasia's On leaving,it's beautiful and I got to see her in concert a few days ago.She has a voice of an angel.

Somehow I guess my fav 2006 album will be Tom Waits Orphans, hope to get it soon.
