New Rhythm & Blues Quartet - but they have always just been known as NRBQ since their 1969 inception. A remarkable band, although without longtime axeman Al Anderson (who quit a few years ago), I don't think they are quite the act they used to be. Often referred to as the best bar band of all time.... They have a spate of live and studio albums that have gone in and out of circulation. I also have collected many fine boots of theirs....

Easily....

Stadium Arcadium... not only the best of 2006 but so far probably the best album of the new millenium...

Although it's not perfect. Had they reduced it to a 15 or 16 song single CD instead of the ambitious 2-CDs it would be among the greatest albums ever recorded.

You are right...except they began as a five-piece known as the New Rhythm and Blues Quintet.

The original line-up (Terry Adams, keyboard, Joey Spampinato, bass, Steve Ferguson, guitar, Tom Staley, drums and Frank Gadler vocals) plays on the Ludlow Garage 1970 album.

It's a revelation. I got on the bus during the the "classic line-up" period (Adams, Spampinato, Al Anderson on guitar, and Tom Ardolino on drums) and always viewed the earlier work as a prelude to greatness. Wrong.

The Ludlow Garage album demonstrates not only the talents of Ferguson (whom Anderson admired and emulated) but how the sound--and the vision--of NRBQ were already fully formed and in bloom during those early years.

As a fan I've never cared for the "best bar band" tag. It speaks more to the venues they've played in than their actual ability. Yes, they do their share of covers, and on Ludlow Garage 1970 you'll hear tunes originally done by Little Richard, Wilson Pickett, Hank Ballard...but show me another band that also covers Sun Ra. It's on there.

I'll admit there's a little strangeness here and there that takes some getting used to. But open your mind, and give it a listen. You'll find yourself moved in a way that does your heart a lot of good.

How often do you hear music that just makes you SMILE? Not because of a funny lyric, but because it makes you feel that good? There's an instrumental on this album called "Goofus" that does it to me every time...

Ludlow Garage 1970--Best album of 2006. By a country mile.

i'm sure its great and i want it but its clearly not the best album of 2006..its from 1970..i mean come on! it might be the best "reissue" or the best album of 1970 but not the best album of 2006

It's not a reissue. It's never been released before this year.

And is it hard for someone on a Rolling Stones board to conceive that music recorded in 1970 would be better than something created in 2006?

"albums of the year 2006" means new albums.. the issue in my opinion has little to do with music from 1970 being better than music from 2006

the new caruso record of him singing opera from the 1920s is not eligible for album of the year honors

i love nrbq but albums from 36 years ago released then or not are not considered

Actually, I'll cite a precedent, and then the defense will rest.

In 1975 Rolling Stone named "The Basement Tapes" by Bob Dylan & The Band as one of the Best Albums of the Year, even though it was recorded in 1967.

It doesn't matter. Lists don't matter. The thing is to check out Ludlow. Great, great music put together in a wonderful package.

I also liked Modern Times...but for a new album, it sounded pretty OLD!

FutureSex/love Sounds............the album is epic and will change dance music/pop.............and by the way watch Timberlake's smoking performance of "What Goes Around"....and you know'll now why The Glimmer Twins let him perform with them.......its jaw dropping good.........

The Chili Peppers........Stadium Arcadium avery close second.

Lot of concensus here (Raconteurs, Killers, Dylan, etc.)

Anyone pleased with the new Waits album, "Orphans"? Haven't heard it yet.
