dial300,

Please read my subsequent post to ChrisM.
(I've yet to find the Roy Carr book, but one other book mentions that Taylor played with Preston at Preston's gig at the Rainbow on October 25).

Well, your question was, as all of your posts, completely and utterly stupid.

Second, I never, ever have pretended to know it all. I have replied to Stranger's post, pointing out various mistakes (about 50% of the facts stated are wrong, e.g. credits to Ventilator Blues), and I will patiently wait for her/him to answer.

By the way, "dial 300" sounds very much like "Stranger". It's a bit too obvious...

Hi all,

I must comment that this is one of the best threads I have read on this site.

To Miss U: I don't know that Mick T was blacklisted. However, a friend of mine who knows Mick says that in 1989 Mick J. and Keith were not happy that he was invited to participate (by the HOF) in the Rock n roll Hall of Fame Induction for the Stones. I have no verification of this in any books or articles, however.

Mick T. apparently built up a reputation as being unreliable over the years within the industry, so that may have hindered his opportunities. However, he did play with many musicians during that time. He is a gentleman and one of the greatest rock and blues guitarists of all time.

His playing today is still vital - check out Peter Karp Live at The Bottom Line (featuring Mick T. from late 2003) -available from Bennett Studios (http://www.bennettstudios.com).

For some time, he has been using a Strat for slide work. Anyone know whether it is open tuned or set for higher action?

Also, he apparently occasionally finds an SG to play these days. I believe this is from 2003, maybe Canada:

Smokey I wish I knew why Mick chose to use the SG during 69-71 time period and then subsequntly abandon it. Both the Les Paul and SG use the same type of pickups but the SG is much lighter than a Les Paul and thus the guitars have different tonal characteristics which you can clearly hear on Get Yer Ya Yas out. As far as I know, and anyone please coorect me if I'm wrong, Mick used the same Les Paul that Keith used for Honky Tonk Women to play the slide bits on Love In Vain. The reason I say this is because there is a picture of Mick playing a Bigsby equipped Les Paul which appears to be from the 1969 tour (though it could be 1970) on page 86 of the now long out of print "Rolling Stones, An Unauthorised Bioggraphy in Words, Photographs and Music" It would give me great pleasure to scan the photo abd share it with you all but my scanner appears to be on the fritz! Does anyone else have this book?

I had (unfortunately I can't findthm anymore) a full set of B&W pics of MSG 1969 with MT playing the Love in Vain solo on his '59 LP -the one without the Bigsby that's on the cover of Ya-Ya's. About the SG: he favoured he SG over the Les Paul until the '71 tour. The last pics of the SG are from Nellcote, in he hands of Keith. For the Exile sessions Taylor seemed to prefer the ebony ES-355. For the last 10 years I heard (through Jimmy Miller, Taylor and Wyman) that his SG was then stolen from Nellcote, and he replaced it with LP's and a new, gold-hardware ES-355. Apperently, he either didn't like the SG anymore (which I doubt), or he just could't find a good one. Then again, Stranger states that Taylor gave the guitar away, but I do not know the truth behind that.

Thanks Mathijs. I need to fix my scanner so I can put the photo up I mention above for all to see. I also seem to recall a photo from Altamont showing Mick playing the same guitar but its been years since I saw it so I may be wrong about that.

I have found some pictures of the Les Paul with Bigsby Taylor used in the 90's. It certainly is not a vintage '50's Les Paul: the scratchplate and screws as well as the "Standard" inscription in the truss rod cover are giveaways. The thin binding makes it a non-Gibson: Gibson did not start building LP's with the thin binding in the lower horn before 1992 (some very rare models were made with this in the late 70's, but these are easily identifiable). I looked up the article where Taylor mentiones this guitar, and he does say he left it on the train, and that it was a very special "Taylormade" (his words) guitar, made just for him.

Well I think I want to wade in on some statements being made around here.

To answer some of the things Mathijs is saying. I don't feel Taylor went into
a drug-induced stupor from 1976 - 1983

Think he was just upset at what transpired after quitting the Stones and his
disagreement with Jack Bruce and the ending of that situation. Taylor never
was one who craved to be a Rock Star!, he was in it for the music, he was
taking his sweet time after J. Bruce and probably wishes now he did more
to promote his career back then but,

1979 - He sounded pretty damn good to me on the live Little Feat album
A political Blues. His solo album was excellent too - IMO

1981 - toured with Alvin Lee, played with the Stones in KC
1982 - Toured with the Bluebreakers reunion - and SMOKED!!!

Sorry - but I am also one who thinks there is "something" to the idea that
Taylor is "untouchable" to the "big named" music community since he quit the Stones, some might be at his own doing, but why didn't he ever get an invite to all those British all-star get-together's?? I've always wondered if people
were worried about getting on Jagger/Richards bad side if they hooked-up
with Taylor. Taylor has said: Jagger still has not forgiven me for quiting.
And if you "noticed" at the R&R Hall of Fame, the only one who talked to him was
Ronnie, When Taylor asked for a cigarette...

How come Eric Clapton never asked him to tour with him, he asked about everybody else? Where there's smoke......

vocal's and the two trading slide solos....

Cool Stuff!!!

Oh, just remembered something else that always stuck with. A friend introduced
me to one of Ronnie's Roadies / Heroin suppliers back in the early 80's. The
guy had pictures of some of the props Ronnie used for his solo release, back then, desert scene, a Camel was involved? Was told Ronnie was in Mexico,
drying out. The guy bristled when I mentioned Mick Taylor and did he know what happened about Mick T. quiting. He guy at least mentioned that Taylor was a "good Guitar player" But the Stones basically didn't like him...??

WOW, what a Crack Head Scientist we have here, Lol

Just because people call you on your "knowledge" of all things either Guitar related OR on this thread Mick Taylor related, you must stoop down & say that one person's posts are always "completely and utterly stupid", where do you stand in the pecking order of deciding that, huh ?

Oh My, what a bombastic, self centered lil Turd we have trolling this Board.

I am NEW here, but can already see you are an attention seeker, some people "bow" down to you, well I can tell you I won't :-)

Nice Meating you, Martha :-)

You call Mathijs a turd, on your 4th post on IORR? And then claims he's an attention seeker?
If you've reads Mathijs' posts in the past you'd know what excellent posts he write. The battle between Miss U and Mathijs is their own business.

so because he is quite eloquent in wording his posts it is OK for him to call someone else's posts "utterly stupid", Hmmm.

Of course my last sentence about "battle" is the reason for the "utterly stupid" -name. Not his eloquent in wording his posts.

C'mon guys! Knock this crap off and get back to the topic.

The picture that Miss U posted looks to be from late 1967 to me. It's hard to tell for sure but the guitar looks to be the same one Mick obtained from Keith via Ian Stewart. BY the way, does anyone else besides me have the book "Rolling Stones, An Unauthorised Bioggraphy in Words, Photographs and Music" first printedin 1972? There are some great pics in the book that I want to scan but can't as my scanner seems to have died.

Chris, is that the book with a B&W cover? And B&W swirly patterns on inside of cover page? It has pic of Keith at entrance to Nelcote, holding an acoustic, either on back cover or just inside the front cover? With ALL the Stones music/words up to and incl. Sticky Fingers? (My copy went on loan, never to return).

That had simply fantastic pics. Some superb '69 tour photos from memory. Memorable one of Wyman and yellow (fender?) bass, circa '67, with a caption saying 'setting off on soft explosion'. Infact.......... would someone please start a thread on Bill's basses? I would do myself but have no pics in digital form , nor scanner.

I suppose he is referring to this:

Don't have it, but I'll put it on my Christmas list.

It does seem odd that Taylor would have used the ES models in SF and EOMS, but never on tour, especially since Richards seemed to switch guitars so much in comparison and since Taylor used that line in the JBB.

Mr Wibble, that is indeed the same book! There are photos in it which I have never seen anywhere else and so I got a get my scanner sorted so I can post them! The yellow bass you are referring to is 1969 "Competition" Fender Mustang which Bill used on the '69 tour.

Thanks for posting the cover Smokey!

I've now modified my fave posters. Nice to know who your true friends are.
