Well, one thing that has become more and more obvious to me is that noone outside of those who were there really knows what went down. Quotes only say so much and we dont really have Brian's take on what was happening.

Whilst his input is supposedly at zero, we still see him in photos and hear him on a recording.

Are there any magazines or music papers from spring 1969 that feature these photos or similar of the band working in Olympic?

Back to the guitars...

Can anyone confirm that these guitars are one and the same?

>> does the ES 330TD have a short neck? <<

from [www.provide.net]

Gibson ES-330 Thinline Fully Hollow Electric Archtop
Available: 1959 to 1972
Collectibility Rating: 1959 to 1962 dot fingerboard models: C+,
1962 to 1964 block fingerboard models: C, 1965 & later models: D.

(At first glace this model looks like an ES-335, but it isn't anything even close.
Fully hollow instead of semi-hollow, neck meets body at the 15th fret instead of the 19th fret,
and P-90 pickups instead of Humbucking pickups make this model far less than desirable than a 335.
This model was really a replacement for the ES-225, and was not meant as a "cheaper" ES-335.)

1959 Gibson ES-330 introduction specs:
Thinbody, double cutaway, fully hollow body, 1 or 2 P-90 pickups with black covers,
tune-o-matic bridge, trapeze tailpiece (Bigsby vibrato optional), laminated beveled-edge pickguard,
single bound top, back and rosewood fingerboard, pearl dot fingerboard inlays, neck joins body at 15th fret,
crown peghead inlay, sunburst or natural finish.

1962 Gibson ES-330 specs:
Small block fingerboard inlays replace dots, nickel pickup covers replace black plastic pickup covers,
cherry finish available.

1965 Gibson ES-330 specs:
Chrome parts replace nickel (including the pickup covers).

1967 Gibson ES-330 specs:
Sparkling Burgundy finish available.

1968 Gibson ES-330 specs:
ES-335 style neck joining body at 19th fret available as an option.
Walnut brown finish available.

1969 Gibson ES-330 specs:
Sparkling Burgundy finish no longer available.

Gibson ES-330 discontinued 1972.

Gibson did a limited reissue of the ES-330 during 2002 or there abouts, as with nearly all reissues they aren't of the same standard as the originals.

thanks, this is what made me think it might be a short scale neck.

I actually prefer P90s to humbuckers, but the hollow body is a negative.

Both variations are 24 3/4". As I understand it, the bridge is in a different position depending on the neck join.

Keith says he used a Maton on "Gimme Shelter" that someone left at his "pad". He also says that it fell apart at the end of recording the song. Same as Brian's?

the Maton that Brian's playing in these photos is the same one Keith and Mick have in other shots -
it's the only Maton there are photos of Stones with. so it seems it wasn't Brian's,
unless of course he's the one who left it in Keith's flat, which ... i venture to doubt,
let's put it that way. :E

Keith was known to take things that were Brian's. A certain blonde .....

... some "things" go of their own free will. let's put it this way:
the fact that Brian's playing the Maton in the photos on this thread doesn't mean it was his property.

Most instruments weren't bought by the Stones (or the Beatles/Kinks/Hollies), but were sent to them by the factories, as the sight of Brian Jones/Keith RIchards/John Lennon/George Harrison with any guitar meant it would sell thousands more instruments.

It isn't until about 1970 that Keith really started to become interested in certain guitars, and that he really started building a collection. This is about the same time that musicians noticed the decline in quality of new instruments and started searching for '50's and early '60's instruments.

It's a Epiphone Casino.

ah thank you King Bee - and is there a way to tell those two models apart by looking at them?
and do you know when Brian got it? i know he used it on the may 65 Sullivan show for Little Red Rooster,
but i don't know if it also turned up in photos/footage earlier than that.

WOW! I think I'm in heaven, looking at all the guitars he had! Amazingly beautiful instruments, I have to say.
I'm getting a new guitar in June, so this is certainly an interesting thread for me. Thanks everyone for the pictures and information. smiling bouncing smiley

It's probably one of Keith's.

Sheratons back then had mini humbuckers(casino's had P90's) and the headstock is more 'fancy' on the sheraton etc.

oh thank you HM! i will study my old catalogues some more.
i'd ask you more about why you think Keith had more than one Casino, but ...
hm, let me move that over to the Keith's Early Guitars thread. :E

As far as I know Keith only had one casino, and Brian is playing Keith's casino here.

a hopeful bump, in case someone who has that recent guitar-magazine article about Brian
could post what, if anything, it says about his ES-330 and/or his Firebirds. or at least:
what magazine was it, please and thank you kindly? i remember a bit of discussion here when it came out,
but that's about all i remember.

google the name and you'll find he's the person who was trying to get Brian exhumed.
but let's keep this thread on the subject of Brian's guitars, okay? thanks

Is there not a shot (that I've seen somewhere) of both Keith and Brian with a Firebird?
