Disagree. The Rolling Stones did many great singles in recent years:

Plundered My Soul *****
No Spare Parts ****
Doom & Gloom ****
just Your Fool ****
Ride Em On Down ****
Living In a Ghost Town *****
Scarlet *****

I guess that your point of view, treacle, really is that "Start Me Up" (no particular favourite of mine) was their last huge single in the eyes of the public at large.

"Living In A Ghost Town" was a number 1 single in Germany, the fourth-biggest music market in the world. So I think it's not wrong to say that "Ghost Town" was a huge single.

OK what is it with you people? How is this confusing?

I'm not saying there weren't any great songs, or great singles since 1981. I'm talking from a public awareness and sales perspective.

I LOVE DOOM & GLOOM, but I guarantee you that NOBODY I KNOW will have heard the song before. OK...does that make sense?

A great song unfortunately isn't the same as a mammoth, 'played around the world' single.

And don't give me that claptrap about Living In A Ghost Town being number 1 in Germany. I bet you could walk into any hauptbahnhof in any city on any day and throw a baseball all day long, and never hit anyone that has ever heard of the song.

...and that takes nothing away from the song itself.

Achtung! Do I make myself clear?!

But if you use a football instead of the baseball...

Probably fewer injuries, if we're talking about a 'soccer' football. If it's 'American football', I'd bet it'd be even steven.

Really like this one. Especially the extended version of "Slave". Keith's guitar work and Charlies drumming are fantastic on it. Besides the extra songs I also enjoy the live set.

Slave was edited for the original (vinyl) issue. It was (slightly) unedited for the Virgin Records reissues.

I think Fiji Jim might be the single best "newly released" track on any of the Stones' box sets.
It is an amazing Jagger performance over the top of some great guitar work between Keith & Ronnie.
Dig this and haven't quit playing it in heavy rotation since the Box came out.

Listened to the "bonus" TT tracks the other day in my car and the experience was slightly spoilt by the fact that I was trying to figure out on which tracks Mick had rerecorded his vocals...did anyone ever come up with a list ? Actually a list of all the "bonus" tracks over the years would be great ;-)

Fiji Jim, Trouble's A Comin', Shame Shame Shame, It's A Lie, Come To The Ball, Fast Talking... and the silly Start Me Up have new vocals.

That's as far as I can find at the moment.

Living only has guitar from Ronnie - and it's not the bee buzz one, that's original! I listened to the bootleg and the new one... surprised that bee buzz guitar was kept - it's horrible!

Not sure about Drift Away other than the vocals sound original, and like Living... and Fast Talking, it's got that weird IORR vibe to it (not sure if Fast Talking is old and new, I don't think it's completely new). If Mick did any new vocals it's probably a harmony. Haven't really listened to it very much.

Trying to dig through a few things to truly find out. Surly someone has complete details.

That's what I was thinking too. Anyway thanks for pitching in. Obviously for "Come to the Ball" there was no choice (AFAWK) but the others should have stayed as they were, it's not like he was embarrassing himself...

I like the fuzz guitar on Heart of Love. They removed the trademark intro. Wood's playing sounds out of place.

Why didn't Jagger have Taylor add additional guitar? Ronnie didn't record on any IORR tracks (obviously the title track was not part of the IORR sessions) yet alone for TATTOO YOU.

Is the original album remastered (CD) new compared to 2009? I've chosen not to copy the UMG/Polydor remasters - I did with SOME GIRLS and it was unlistenable compared to the Virgin remaster.

Is it worth copying them? I only got the EXILE extra disc (and the Plundered promo so I have both mixes), not the double, but SF, GHS and TY worth it or don't bother?

New (2021) remaster of Tattoo You is louder than 2009 UMG remaster. It is also more compressed comparing to 2009, DR5 vs. DR8. That is not good sounding disk.

All 2009 remasters are good for nomad listening only. Stick with Virgin if you care for long version of Slave. Otherwise, you have three options to choose - EMI-Tohiba 'black triangle' from 1983,CBS from 1986 and flat transfer from 2011.

PS. You can play a game here too winking smiley

It reached #1 in one country; and tanked everywhere else.

Under The Boardwalk was a #1 in Australia. Is that considered to be one of the Stones’ great singles?

Re: Tattoo You deluxe version

Tanked is a stretch. #2 in Scotland, #6 in Hungary, #17 in Switzerland, platinum sales in Brazil and #6 in the Bubbling Under Billboard in the US.

They are very old men, so topping one chart + making their mark in others is pretty well done, I'd say smiling smiley

I didn't sell my CBS CDs but I only have 4 left. Very weird. I moved a lot from 1994-2006, and only 3 times since. I do remember comparing the CBS to Virgins and the Virgins sounding better, at least up through TATTOO YOU, and I know you mentioned that some of them were not remastered, I still have REWIND, DIRTY WORK, STEEL WHEELS, MADE IN THE SHADE and STILL LIFE. No idea where the rest are and I don't have any interest in buying them again since I have the Virgins.

Thanks for the heads up though on the recent TATTOO YOU. What a waste.

How the hell can Stephen Marcussen think he's doing a good job by brickslamming the remastering?!!? Because Mick Jagger told him to? Jagger should know better - he hears everything. Well, apparently Mick doesn't mind. Perhaps it gets back to Keith's observation: Mick listens to a lot of crap.

Found this on Google. Kowalski sums up the Marcussen remastering quite perfectly.

Well, as an Englishman, I have to state that ‘Scotland’ hardly counts! And the U.S. ‘Bubbling Under’? Surely, charting under position #100 is a big negative, no??

I don’t see what the point was of adding Wood’s guitar to tracks he didn’t play on originally. It would be like adding Taylor’s guitar to a Beggar’s Banquet outtake Brian played on years earlier.
