Question On The Clash
Posted by: camper88 ()
Date: October 13, 2005 03:03

I've seen threads on Aerosmith, Black Crowes, and countless other acts (Bon Jovi even), and I'm wondering what Stones fans think of The Clash?

I think their best albums like their first album and London Calling are some of the best work of that period, simply put: they're really good. I also thought that they had a Stones like energy and intesity. Any thoughts on the Clash? Anyone see them in concert? I saw them in a hall of about 3000 people and it was incredibly alive.

Saw them in Chicago at The Aragon circa Combat Rock. Great show. Couple years later the Strummer led Clash played at The Milwaukee Auditorium the same night Frank Sinatra played The Milwaukee Arena (both venues occupy the same block). Now, wouldn't that have been fun strolling around the block before the shows?

I'd say that one of the top 5 concerts ever for me was The Clash in NYC; summer of '78. They played one of the loudest, hardest rocking sets I've ever heard. I love their sound, their intensity, their diversity. I wish they had better support from not only the record company, but their fans...

Their BEST OF collection is simply great.

I only saw the "Mk II" version on their last tour after Mick Jones and Topper had left. I still thought they were pretty good although that era gets a bad rap

IMO they were the greatest band to have emerged after the 60's. A band who put their principles where their mouth was, despite their many flaws.

very underrated musically by people who just dismiss them as a "punk" band. There was much more to them than that. I still think Topper Headon was a helluva drummer.

I @#$%&' love them.

What about the Jam? ...any Jam fans out there?

Re: Question On The Clash

Mick's eye was more on The Eagles, and their super selling "Hotel California" than The Clash, in the late '70's. There were published articles how he would listen to the album over and over again; not necessarily listening to "Radio Clash." I have a feeling his ingorant responses would be accurate to The Clash's effect on his songwriting. The effect heard on Some Girls was primarily Mr. Ron Wood. He woke up the band...

Jam fans? Hey, get your own thread. lol

Actually, I'm surprised that there's such unanimity on the Clash, usually there's always some reaction against the band (Crowes, Aerosmith, etc), I'm heartened that there's such consistency amongst Stones fans for The Clash.

saw them in chicago in 79. one of the best shows I ever saw. Bo Diddly was the opener. he played for about 40 mins and only did 4 songs. then the clash came out and rocked for almost 3 hours. saw them again on the combat rock tour and they sucked.

Hey backstreetboy, London Calling is my fave album after "Exile" and The Card Cheat is my fave tune on it. That is Mick Jones all the way. He said that for that one they recorded it live with the piano, Bass, drums and trumpet. Then they recorded it all again. That's how they got that huge Spector-like sound. It's all there twice. Great lyrics!

I saw the Clash in '79 I guess , in Wiesbaden.
Lots of people where spitting at the band, so Joe Strummer points one guy out and gives him a hand to make it up the 2 meter high Stage.
They both stand arm in arm together and Joe tells the audience that he dislikes beeing spat at. Last word was spoken, he hit his Telecaster (Headstock) over the guys head and booted him off the stage - 2 meters^^.

But a great concert, btw.

Strummer was notorious for not being overly fond of being gobbed at. I'd heard of that incident before (knew it was Germany, but didnt know where). At that Belfast show I was at in '84 he jumped into the crowd and had a go with some twat who had spat at him and then started some lecture about 'wánkers' who think its trendy to spit.

I think at one show in the early days he was opening his mouth to sing when a gob from the crowd went right down his throat and he ended up with hepatitis. No wonder he wasnt to keen on it

I LOVE the Clash!!

Never got to see 'em live, but from the footage I've seen, they were great live!

IOther than the regular albums, I highly recommend 'Super Black Market Clash'. That album rules, especially 'Capital Radio 2' ("Oi, Jonesy!", "What?").

Great stuff. Great band. 'Clash On Broadway' rules too.....

Clash are simply the second best 2-guitar rock band.

Yes, saw them in '78, (Bristol Docklands). They were the real deal, not the Stones from '76 to '82.

I think Sandinista is marvellous too. And Big Audio Dynamite were a good offshoot.

And it's thanks to them and bands like Pistols and Sham 69 that we got the punk-influenced Some Girls and a revitalised Stones, who were being seriously challenged for the first time in 15 years.

To someone above - yes, I liked early Jam - saw them too - and Ramones (a bit silly but fun!).

Where is that excellent Black Market Clash Website? It´s not on
the same link anymore.

I always liked their "We don´t give a fvck"-attitude.
You really must have guts to name the US tour "Pearl Harbour Tour",
supported by Bo Diddley btw.

Yes, I knew, but instead of the Pistols the Clash were a talented
bunch of musicians both on instruments and songwriting.

Interesting hypothesis. In what respect can't a Clash album compare to Bollocks? I Think London Calling and the eponymous album are as good as anything done in that period and stand up well (better?) today.

because "bollocks" song for song cannot be touched...it plainly out-rocks anything the clash could come up with....the Clash were definately better musicians & more diverse..but so what?...lot of bands are better "musicians" than the stones...it comes down to "personality" and Rotten as a live performer/character/image was in his own league....as for "standing up well" bollocks holds up fine...i still get the same "charge" out of it as i did in '77

I saw every tour that ever went through the States including the faux Clash w/out Jones. I don't recall any spitting however.

The Clash were tremendous.
