While I remain very sad at the passing of TP I can recommend a cheering rambling video on Youtube with Petty and Gary Shandling. These two are pretty funny together. It will put a smile on your face.

One of my all-time favorite Petty tracks, an absolute classic. Never seen the video, and it adds nothing.

P.S. How eerie that this song contains the line "after that night in Vegas... and the hell that we went through" ... with Petty dying almost immediately after the Vegas massacre.

I've been on a three day Petty binge that has no end in sight and I'm getting more convinced the guy never wrote a bad song.

Me too... going on 5 days, he sure has a ton great music...
and I understand we will be getting 4+ more albums they say he has in the can.

Thank you for posting all these videos, bye bye johnny.

It shows how much these musicians loved Tom, although it is no surprise at all. He was one of the nicest musicians around and he will be sorely missed.

This may be TP and the Heartbreakers at their absolute peak- Live at the Fillmore West, San Francisco, California, February 7, 1997. The last night of a sold out 20 night stand. Killer SBD recording

Thanks for this - just listening to Around and Around - it’s a corker!

Gutted over this.

I feel that were it not for Tom Petty, the Wilburys would've taken themselves way too seriously. TP had that great sense of humour, what with the Mad Max video pastiche of YoU Got Lucky, the Mad Hatter in Don't Come Around Here No More, and the cavalcade of imagery on Jammin' Me. You put that in with the vocals of Roy Orbison, the songwriting of Dylan, the guitar of Harrison, and the production arrangements of Lynne.

It takes people by surprise because we all want our heroes to go on forever. That’s because they give us happiness via their creativity. And when a person is around the same age as Petty it brings it home that we are not immortal. We don’t know him other than through what he gave us and that is one shed load of a lot of great music.

Very well said! smileys with beer

Statement from the family.

“Our family sat together this morning with the Medical Examiner – Coroner’s office and we were informed of their final analysis that Tom Petty passed away due to an accidental drug overdose as a result of taking a variety of medications.

Unfortunately Tom’s body suffered from many serious ailments including emphysema, knee problems and most significantly a fractured hip.

Despite this painful injury he insisted on keeping his commitment to his fans and he toured for 53 dates with a fractured hip and, as he did, it worsened to a more serious injury.

On the day he died he was informed his hip had graduated to a full on break and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication.

We knew before the report was shared with us that he was prescribed various pain medications for a multitude of issues including Fentanyl patches and we feel confident that this was, as the coroner found, an unfortunate accident.

As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives. Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications.

On a positive note we now know for certain he went painlessly and beautifully exhausted after doing what he loved the most, for one last time, performing live with his unmatchable rock band for his loyal fans on the biggest tour of his 40 plus year career. He was extremely proud of that achievement in the days before he passed.

We continue to mourn with you and marvel at Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' incredible positive impact on music and the world. And we thank you all for your love and support over the last months.

Thank you also for respecting the memory of a man who was truly great during his time on this planet both publicly and privately.

We would be grateful if you could respect the privacy of the entire Heartbreaker family during this difficult time.”

According to a statement from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, Petty was taking several medications, including Fentanyl, oxycodone, Xanax, Restoril, and Celexa.

The coroner's report lists his official cause of death as "multisystem organ failure due to resuscitated cardiopulmonary arrest due to mixed drug toxicity."

Prescription opiates and benzos are horrifying. I've been on benzos and they were the WORST. I'd never take one again.

Why would someone prescribe that shitload? Or was it a Prince situation - getting stuff from here and there for physical pain?

Doubtful one doctor would be prescribing all that, but who knows.

Very sad.

So agree with that; the report says that he did it (the tour) for the fans. The family hope that the release of the report will spark more query into the opioid crisis.

Sad that any doctor would prescribe opiates to a heroin addict.
Sad that Petty couldn't find a path out of addiction.
