J. Geils Band and Joe Tex!

To me, three are obvious and long overdue. Yes is so overdue, ELO is finally on the ballet and have the hits and last of a band that they should be in (I'm a huge fan), and Pearl Jam is as obvious as Nirvana and they deserve it. Otherwise, J Geils is fine with me. Maybe Joan Baez and The Cars to fill that out. They are the remaining rock ones that had more than one hit or one album.

Isn't this something like the 11th or 12th time that Chic has been nominated, despite consistently finishing dead last in fan voting year after year? All I can say is somebody at the rock hall must have an enormous hard on for them.

Yes, most of the obvious ones mentioned.

That said, the list of deserving artists is getting really small. And there are lots of folks who have no business being in there.

When the RRHOF starts resorting to one hit wonders, it's not good. Also, genres VERY loosely related to R and R.

I'm not sure if ELO or Yes deserve a «rock» nomination, but in terms of name and merits they certainly do.

J. Geils Band is probably the best rock band out of USA ever. It's a shame that they never got inducted.

I still don't get how bands like Dire Straits, Jethro Tull and Moody Blues are consistently ignored. I'm not even a big fan of all of them, but they are recognizable names that had good careers and the Hall Of Fame likes to act like they never existed. Seriously, Straits and Moody Blues had tons of hits and a run of several great albums. They are way more deserving than people like Journey and Chic IMO.

Bad Brains (they did more for R'n'R than 90% on that list...)

Just not Pearl Jam, I can't stand their infuriating three chord rock songs.

Has anyone ever been nominated or even inducted twice for being in two bands?

Eric Clapton has been inducted three times!
As a solo artist, as a member of the Yardbirds and as a member of Cream.

Considering what has passed for 'rock' in the past, they certainly deserve it.
ELO, while mostly pop, have some great 'rock' running through their catalogue.
And Yes, as progressive as they were, have some tunes that are the epitome of classic rock as heard daily on almost every classic rock station.

Pretty. I think all of CSNY are in twice (for CSN and their other bands, Neil by himself and Buffalo Springfield). All the Beatles. It happens.

ELO is pop/rock. I understand not being "Stones rock" but they are definitely classic rock music. So is Yes, and I say that as them being one of those very few bands that was still "rock" and not just "prog". To me, they are in line with Genesis and Floyd as the really big bands with that sort of sound. After that, I'd understand the debate. But I'm not even a Yes fan and think they should be in by now.

That is an interesting list. More for so many deserving names. Must be some names there that have already been up a few times.
The ones I'd take OFF are Journey, Pearl Jam and Janet. Why Journey? For MOR hits? Its a Hall of Fame. Pearl Jam had one decent album, 2o years ago.
Bad Brains and Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode are inspired choices.
Jane's Addixtion, one of my alltime favorite groups will not get in.

OK, I think it should be MC5 - Joe Tex - Chic - Yes - Cars or ELO or Baez

Knopfler on the pointlessness of recognition that comes too late:

Not that Pearl Jam needs the defense, but they are one of the very few recognizable names that came out of the 90s that are STILL filling arenas. I'm biased cause I think they are great, but IMO its Pearl Jam and Nirvana from that time that are still relevant. There's Alice In Chains, there's Soundgarden, there's a whole bunch of those bands still around today, but Pearl Jam still is a huge draw live and I say without bias is much bigger than those other bands. But thats just me.

Personally, I think there are a lot there that don't deserve it. Yes, the Hall sucks nowadays, but the original goal was Hall Of Fame. Great stuff, excellent stuff. I LOVE The Zombies. Oddessey and Oracle is one of the greatest albums ever made and when I saw them do it live last year in full it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. But Hall Of Fame? Even I don't think so. Steppenwolf? Yeah, Born To Be Wild and Magic Carpet Ride are great, but they are literally a two hit wonder. MC5? I know they are influential and that I've never really gotten them. I like Kick Out The Jams, but at most isn't it just that one album they have? I hardly consider them Hall Of Fame.

I'm not really AGAINST people in the Hall. Madonna is already in and to me thats basically criminal cause it makes no sense. I don't agree with the rap people but whatever, its a wasted argument. All I can say is my vote usually goes to the people that had a lasting consistent career (not one album or hit wonders), achieved a certain level of fame (remember, that is kind of a component), and were influential. In the end, you are going in a Hall with the Zeppelins and Stones and Beatles and Kinks and Whos of all time. You should have made an obvious impact.

Dire Straits still baffles me. They were HUGE in the 80s, had a great run of albums, and actually ended as opposed to limping on. I can argue someone like Jethro Tull or Moody Blues but they never had Knopfler level fame. I'm shocked Dire Straits isn't even in the discussion. And honestly, I'm as far from a fan as possible, but how the hell is Bon Jovi never considered?! If we're being objective, he's made a fine lasting career for himself. Its all so random.

Say no more, the Hall of Fame has lost all integrity and importance.
As Keith might call it, a 'paltry honor'.

THE ZOMBIES !

Re: OT: New Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame nominees announced

The Zombies
Joe Tex
Steppenwolf
J Geils

As for ELO, I know it's a matter of personal taste, but I have always seen them as rock by the numbers. If longevity counts, maybe. Creativity? No.

Electric Light Orchestra
J Geils Band
Joan Baez
Joe Tex
Pearl Jam
Zombies
Yes

If Cat Stevens is in, then Baez gets in, their music styles being somewhat similar. People tend to forget how influential she was in the late 60's, early 70's.

Pearl Jam because Vedder's a friend of mine but not through music. Because of baseball and the Cubs.

J Geils should be a shoo in, but because they're a bunch of dorks and can't get along, their career longevity hasn't been what it should have been. Had they stuck it out they would have been in long ago.

The Zombies absolutely need to be there, almost before anyone else on the list.
