You Got Me Rocking

I was a butcher cutting up meat
My hands were bloody, I'm dying on my feet
I was a surgeon till I started to shake
I was falling but you put on the break

Hey, hey
You've got me rocking now
Hey, hey
You've got me rocking now
Hey, hey
You've got me rocking now

I was a pitcher down in a slump
I was a fighter taken for a sucker punch
I'm feeling bad, guess I lost my spring
I was the boxer who can't get in the ring

Hey, hey
You've got me rocking now
Hey, hey, hey
You've got me rocking now
Hey, hey
There ain't no stopping me

Hey, hey
You've got me rocking now
Hey, hey
You've got me rocking now
Hey, hey
( You've got me rocking) All right

Oh yeah

Oh
Mmm

I was a hooker losing her looks
I was a writer, can't write another book
I was all dried up, dying to get wet
I was a tycoon drowning in debt

I said hey, hey
You've got me rocking now
Hey, hey, hey
You've got me rocking now
Hey, hey
There ain't no stopping me

Hey, hey, hey
(You've got me rocking now)
I said hey, hey, hey - yeah
I said hey, hey, hey
(You've got me rocking now)

Hey, hey, hey - ahh...
Hey, hey
You've got me rocking now

That's all right - oh
Come on, baby, right here
Come on, come on...

Yeah...
Hey... hey, hey, hey, hey

Don't you stop me, don't you stop me
Don't, don't you stop me
Oh you got me
Oh - yeah...

Whoo!

It's simple, it's straightforward, but it has that special touch which makes it stand-out as a typical Stones song, the rhythm, the timing, just right. Also, it's one of the few (very few) songs of the past 35 years that really works very well live (actually better than the studio version).

In concert, that moment when Keith pauses before resuming the riff is quite cool.
He used to vary the length of the pause, which was great drama and fun too,
but then people started misinterpreting it as brain damage eye rolling smiley

Live its great, and the song itself is a typical Stones song, so Good.
Like it, not love it.

YGMR is a gem, a true latter day Stones-classic.
Great guitars, great drums, great voice, great lyrics, everthing´s great.
I love it! Live it has even more power. They should open their upcoming shows with YGMR.

One of the better singles of the last 30 years.

You Got Me Rocking comes in for quite a lot of flack when it is is played live these days but it's one that can really make the fur fly and get the crowd going early on.

It's a strange beast with lyrics very much focussed on creating a stadium lifting vibe a la Start Me Up and a sound more akin to AC/DC or Zeppelin than what we've come to expect from the Stones.

Love the lyrics too - little bit punky and a kind of feel that they'd return to on Doom And Gloom.

And by the way, this is my 10,000th post. Don't you know I'm a 10,000 man!

I never enjoyed listening to it,neither studio track nor live.

For some reasons they felt comfortable playing it regularly up to 2007,fortunately it was dropped off the standard setlist since 2012 in most cases,if I remember correctly.

Not even Stones by numbers...

Ohhhh baby, this is the shit ... Charlie’s machine-gun intro, those glorious, crunchy, droning guitars, the nasty spittin’ lyrics, Mick’s yowling delivery, the barrel-house piano, that throbbing rhythm, the monster drum sound ...

Pure, unadulterated high-octane rock and roll from the greatest band ever, and I like it, yes I do.

Liked it a lot at first, but after being over exposed tour after tour I lost my love for it. But I must say it's a crowd pleaser and I enjoy watching people having a good time with it. Miss You is about the same in that respect. Though I like that song much more and would call it a classic. Just not on Jumpin' Jack Flash level.

I have mixed feelings with this song.
One one hand, it's a fine and bouncing rocker with great playing.
One the other, it's one of those tracks which gives ammunition to the critics that since 'Tattoo You', The Stones are only doing pastiches: A repetive riff, played over off-the-cuff lyrics and zero dynamics. I guess it sounded okay in 1994, with all the grunge and hard-rock, but today it's a bit dated.

As we all know, they can still deliver the goods, but it was a wise choice to release 'Love Is Strong' as the first single.

All said, 'You Got Me Rocking' had always worked as a live-song.

You Got Me Rocking was in the setlist of the European Tour in 2014 , for me it was great it was played live there and it rocked the crowd at Werchter in Belgium.

Stones by numbers. "Hey Keith, play a scratchy intro, put a couple of simple riffs on top, I'll sing 'hey hey'...a lot... And we'll see how we go", says Mick.

Plodding, formulaic... Fail.

always liked it a lot, I would even say love it. One of the few post 1989 songs which are regularly played live - so you could argue that in a way it really is a later-day Stones classic.
BTW: VL really starts strong with LIS and then YGMR....

Love it live, especially after VL. Love it on No Security.

Yeah, that was typical for the 2007 shows. Maybe it was awkward because he was confusing other members of the band with it. Same at the end of the song: he sometimes kept randomly delaying the final chords by adding some extra riffs and bad soloing. He was not communicating with the others about it, resulting in some very mediocre versions. Probably only coincidentally, it was on the post brain surgery, post pirates run of the tour. At the same time he also tried to claim the solo in Rough Justice, which wasn't too great an idea either.

By now it has turned back to its usual greatness. smiling smiley

One of a handful of great post-Wyman classics. I think it's the perfecto mix that's really cool too. It booms, it has that great bouncy Stones feeling. I'm not sure how they play it on stage anymore, because I don't pay much attention to them live any longer, but in the 90s this was great on stage.

Most of those 90's boomboom mixes are horrible.
To be honest I can't remember the YGMR perfecto mix exactly...

My favorite is the Sexy Disco Dub mix; a perfect hybrid of dance and rock (which has often eluded them on other mixes). Check it out.

I've always quite liked it but Silver Dagger's comments ring a bell with me.

It's more like an ACDC number. It rocks very hard ...but it don't really swing

Their only past 81 warhorse (94). So it's a fresh song by Stones standard. Only 22 years old. It works well live obviously. But I can't help finding it boring and repetitive.

Like that one, one of the few post 'Dirty Work' songs I do like. From what I've seen only from video clips of live concerts it seems to work well (unfortunately I've not been able to ever go to a Stones concert).

You are forgetting "Slipping Away" and "Out Of Control", both of which are also warhorses on tours, just like "You Got Me Rocking" is.

Maybe. But I count the top 20 most played songs as bona fide warhorses here. OOC is number 24 and SA 33. And SA is more of a Keith solo song. YGMR is number 15 by the way: [www.setlist.fm]
