I love Leon Russell think Nicky Hopkins an Ian Stewart were always the best 5th Stone, Wasn't Jerry lee Lewis one of the first kings of rock an roll but what about a the guy who played piano on Don't lay no Boogie Woogie on the king of Rock an roll Ian Armitt just to name someone different. But Nicky an Ian were the kings on the Stones piano.

I hate the best! The heart takes me by Ian Stewart and Ian McLagan, but I also really like Billy Preston.
I bought the album Chuck Leavell, Back To The Woods: A Tribute To The Pioneers of Blues Piano and I was impressed ... beautiful.
We hope that they are not the best .... I love the worst!

Ah yeah my dad's a Liberace fan. He's obviously very talented, but I just don't like his sound. I love Fats Domino's style

That depends on the definition of rock 'n' roll.

In my opinion the rockers of the 1955 to 1959 are/ were rock n roll.In the purest sense.
Elvis certainly wasnt post Army.
Cliff was pre The Young Ones.
The Beatles were in their Hamburg period.
Brian Jones never was, he was a blues man....his lifestyle was rock n roll however.

Who would you say was/is the greatest rock n roll piano player in history? I think of people like Little Richard and Fats Domino. There are so many to choose from. Maybe Chuck Leavell? Hopefully this will be an interesting topic

WHAT!!!!!!!???????? How anyone could say Chuck Leavell and "best rock'n'roll pianist ever" in the same universe is out of their minds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's Jerry Lee Lewis, of course. The only one that comes close is Little Richard.

Fats Domino also comes close

Yeah. You're right. McLagan. Nicky Hopkins. Johnnie Johnson. A few others. But flat out rock'n'roll piano is easily The Killer.

Funny story about Liberace in Alice Cooper's book that came out 7-8 years ago, said all the flamboyance is all show, said they were shocked afterwards when he changes backstage into jeans and a t-shirt and said "lets go get a beer, nobody recognizes me offstage, we'll be fine."

One person who I don't think has been mentioned is Warren Zevon. Excellent pianist. Classically trained but definitely rock n roll

My answer to the question is the same as about half the posters here, Johnnie Johnson.

There are other greats, but no other pianist ever left me slack-jawed with wonder as I listened. It almost seems impossible that anyone could get a piano to do what he did on those Chuck Berry classics.

I agree with stewedandkeefed that Warren Zevon is one of the best.I would also like to add Memphis Slim and Geraint Watkins to the group.

As pioneers of a style that led to Rock & Roll piano, Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis deserve a mention. So does Freddie Slack (Cow-Cow Boogie).

For his ability to improvise, his sartorial style and his fondness for the painted ladies, Chico Marx was a big influence on what followed, and may very well have been the first "Rock Star".

How about John Cale? His piano playing in the Velvets contributed just as much to their sound as his viola. Try Waiting For The man, among many others.

Yeah, I thought the same thing! Good book though, especially if you like golf, about every 3rd chapter was nothing but golf!

Awesome! Best thing I've seen all day.

Actually I've got a friend from Texas nick named Fluteman John and he was befriended by the Wailers and played a bunch of shows with them. He ripped some pretty good flute on a bunch of those classic Wailers tunes.
