I like Baby, Break It Down. Great guitar playing by Keith and nice vocals by Mick. It might be a bit pedestrian, though, but I love those layers of great guitars.

Re: ALBUM TALK: Voodoo Lounge

that's funny..I was preoccupied with other things going on in life and was unaware of any release date regarding new material from the Stones. I vividly remember sitting at my desk at work around July/Aug '95 when a song came on the radio (almost background noise) and I said about the song a poor attempt at trying to sound like the Stones - not realizing it was the Stones!!! I bought the album and was further embarrassed by the following line "I was a butcher cutting the meat"!!! Oh boy, to this day I am not sure why people think this is a great album.

Jumping the Shark is a good reference......I tried very hard to like this album but its lame....

Yes, I like it too. I like the melody too. It's one of the few songs on VL that really works as a pop-song.

Baby, Break It Down is a song I always (almost desperately) wanted to like: It's got a great title to start with. The chorus melody is nice. The groove is nice. It's got nice guitars. However, it never really "clicks" as a whole despite its nice ingredients. It's probably Mick's lame (or pedestrian) vocal melody in the verses.

You've broken down this song perfectly except for the 'probably.' The verses are fantastically lame. It ruins what could've been a very cool song. Time and time again with the later stuff it's the lame lyrics, the lame melodies or both.

It just hasn't aged very well. It's not something that seems to get better with time like GOATS HEAD SOUP or TATTOO YOU.

GHS maybe just seems to get better with time because it is around for such a long time now.

That's because it's a good album.

Yet somehow you describe DIRTY WORK:

It´s like your back is hurting, as time goes on you just get used to it. Getting used to it doesnt make it better, its just getting used to it. VL trimmed down to the same runtime as GHS is a much much more entertaining and refreshing album than boring GHS. I´d even say my homemade short-version of VL is sparkling while the original album feels rather lame.

Baby Break It Down is THE worst Stones song ever, imo.

Dont know if it is really the worst song (there are some other candidates) but sure it is very bad and most of all: oh so boring. Their most boring song ever, as far as I am concerned.

Good grief. You can't make up your mind about which one is their most boring song ever.

Bill Perks obviously doesn't have DIRTY WORK, STEEL WHEELS, BRIDGES TO BABYLON, FORTY LICKS or A BIGGER BANG because all five of those releases have their worst songs on them:

DIRTY WORK (minus Harlem Shuffle, Too Rude, Had It With You, Sleep Tonight)
STEEL WHEELS Rock And A Hard Place
VOODOO LOUNGE, of course, has You Got Me Rocking and Sparks Will Fly
BRIDGES has Might As Well Get Juiced, Gunface, Already Over Me and Always Suffering
FORTY LICKS has Stealing My Heart and Keys To Your Love
BANG has Streets Of Love and Sweet Neo Con

VOODOO LOUNGE of all albums has the most candidates for "worst song ever".
GOATS HEAD SOUP of all albums has the most candidates for "most boring song ever".

Already Over Me & Always Suffering are nominated in both categories.

Imo, Baby Break It Down suffers most from Mick´s singing. Maybe Keith should have been singing that song - it would still be a boring song but maybe less annoying.

Listened to my very own version of VL yesterday I thought that Brand New Car is most likely the best of all VL-songs. I´ve always liked it a lot but it seems it has grown since the last time.

Winning Ugly is always number one when it comes to worst Stones songs ever.

Even they know DW is bad. When they were getting ready for the BRIDGES tour, because clearly it didn't come up for VOODOO, Mick had this to say:

Mick Jagger (September 1997): No songs from Dirty Work!

I keep trying to put ('80s) songs in, and either they don't sound very good, or no one's very enthusiastic about it. I can't make the band enthusiastic about songs they don't seem to be enjoying. You'd think (Keith)'d want to... Well, if (Dirty Work) was his record... You'd think he'd want to play something from some of those things. It's not only Keith, it's like the whole band is, like, Well yes, er... We played Undercover on the last tour.

Dirty Work has most amounts of bad songs ever collected in one place!
There are 3 decent tracks (One Hit, Shuffle and Sleep), the rest are overly shouting-guitar-drum-banging-non-tunes, without any consistence. And that's no matter much you are trying to convince anyone about how great that horrible record are.

I don't think Had It With You and Too Rude fit that description very well..

Hey I sure enjoyed what I listened to from a bootleg version of this album (that was temporarily on Youtube).

I don't know how to judge any of the late 1980s and early 1990s album releases by the Rolling Stones as they are far removed from the 1960s and 1970s eras sound...and by the time they were released it seems that the music scene for changed completely. Maybe in 5o years time these will be seen as masterpieces (you never know).

The Bob Clearmountain remix of Love Is Strong is a better mix than the LP mix. All of those other "remixes" are atrocities.

It is horrible. It's pure mush. Angie is bad enough with the mush but at least it's musically fantastic. Those two from LICKS are terrible. They had way too much nerve to put those shit songs on a greatest hits compilation.

What is evident from track judgements in the preceding posts here, is that there is not much agreement about preferred songs for VOODOO LOUNGE either. Reducing playing time of albums therefore seems not to be a good idea.

it wouldn't matter which ones were left off,it's just all c-grade material.cutting it down to 8 or 10 songs would help because you don't want to pile on more and more not so great material.

less is more in this case.Black and Blue is a really good example of this theory, they didn't have alot of songs for Black and Blue because they worked up songs in the studio in those days and they were rehearsing guitar players so it was just alot of jamming as opposed to writing songs.

Black and Blue only has 8 songs, its not the best stones album but it is a special, unique album because it's a short and sweet statement.
Voodoo Lounge just rambles on and on for far too long and goes nowhere.

Black And Blue isnt shorter than most Stones-albums (~40min) but sure is sweeter than several other Stones-albums, especially when I think of the two albums before it and the one that followed Black And Blue.

Up to its release, BLACK AND BLUE to me was their weakest album release, despite "Memory Motel". It is not that sweet short album as you hold forth as model.

I can imagine that from a shortened VOODOO LOUNGE posters here would have cut a couple of the songs that I like, especially "Sweethearts Together" and "Blinded by Rainbows", and left me with less interesting songs. The same way some of those posters prefer to take away "Might As Well Get Juiced" and my special delight "Always Suffering" from BRIDGES TO BABYLON. So I say no thank you to your recommendation. I want to have those songs.

The songs are long, and this was before the Cd age. Just as music as on other albums.
