I do not think it's the best Stones album, but for some reason is the album the Stones I hear most often. It 'very playful, but equally has some intense moments, is an album that does not tire, well recorded and well played.
Maybe I'm wrong, this is the best! Not there's a song that I avoid, I like them all. Masterpiece 80s the Stones!

everything's turning to gold

It sounded nice in the day, only, just nice. But this is The Rolling Stones we are talking about.

It's just so ordinary as an album. Almost all filler with the very odd exception of the title track, and the pretty Indian Girl...

So. Compare it to DIRTY WORK.

Ohhhhh, that's right - no one (except ONE person) can. Because ER blows DW away. In fact, EVERY Stones LP blows DW away except... DW.

Historically, ER is a very fitting album. Has it aged well? Critically, no. Sonically yes. Songwise... down the middle. All About You is pure genius. The title track is outstanding, as is She's So Cold and Down In The Hole. Summer Romance and Where The Boys Go are good up and up rockers. There's really nothing to not like on ER. It's a down the middle Stones album.

Nothing wrong with that at all.

BB/LIB/SF/EOMS it ain't but so what?

To me ER is the perfect "summer" album. I tend to bust it out as the weather heats up, and the school year comes to an end -- I'm a principal. It's a party record first and foremost, imo. Nothing too serious. Blast it on the beach and in your back yard! Each album side ends with a ballad like the good old days.

I also love the recording/mix of it. Crisp. Great cymbal sound. The guitar sound is great too.

There's a great run of terrific sounding albums from Black and Blue, ER, and Tattoo You. Somehow the sound of Some Girls is an anomaly in this run. I even like the sound of Undercover, though I know many will chime in about how 80s it sounds, but the guitars kick a$$ on there.

That's a great summary about the album that I concur with - and the sound!

ER was one of my first Stones albums and "she´s so cold” was the 1st stones song I fell in love withsmiling smiley) I think it is a real good album, but not a great one, though one of the best sounding ones. Side 2 is clearly better than side 1.

My assessment (out of 10) :

Dance (Pt. 1) ==> 7
Summer Romance ==> 9
Send It to Me ==> 6
Let Me Go ==> 7
Indian Girl ==> 4
Where the Boys Go ==> 9
Down in the Hole ==> 10
Emotional Rescue ==> 10
She's So Cold ==> 10
All About You ==> 8

Me too. Also agree with the ranking,but would give Indian Girl a zero and All About You a twelve.

Dance (Pt. 1) ==> OK, BUT FORGETTABLE
Summer Romance ==> FILLER
Send It to Me ==> SILLY
Let Me Go ==> OK, BUT FORGETTABLE
Indian Girl ==> GOOD (yes, I am serious)
Where the Boys Go ==> FILLER
Down in the Hole ==> GOOD
Emotional Rescue ==> VERY GOOD
She's So Cold ==> VERY GOOD
All About You ==> GOOD

Put half of Emotional Rescue together with half of Undercover, and you would have a very good album.

Whether you like Where The Boys Go or not is okay, but it can never be filler. it's far to noticable and energetic to be that smiling smiley

Indian Girl is the worst song they ever wrote

Dance - pretty funky, would have been better as a shorter instrumental piece as envisaged by Keith originally.
Summer Romance- disposable but playful
Send it 2 me- please don't
Let me go- nice sleazy mid paced rocker, great Jagger drawl
Indian girl- top 5 worst ever
WTBG - guilty pleasure, the girls voices at the end wtf
Down in the hole - classy mood changer, although micks lil lapse into faux cockney embarrassing
ER- icy cool, love the bit where it switches out of falsetto
She's so cold- stones Berry, love it
All about You - one of their best ever, a truly beautiful piece

Overall enjoyable but the first dip in quality

So says you. Winning Ugly, Back To Zero, Hold Back, Streets Of Love, Always Suffering, Keys To Your Love, Stealing Your Heart... Sweet Neo Con. A few more. All miles above in worsness than Indian Girl.

There at least four songs here that are simply not my cup of tea (that ruins it for me). That said, there is at least a consistency of sound overall (like Undercover) and there are some good melodic songs here(and a couple of classics).

So (like any Stones album) worth a listen. Because of this thread I listened all the way through the album for the first time in years...and it's not all that bad.

The last one (Keith's 'All About You'), although a bit slow, is a stunner.

The radio promo instrumental version is even better, so they didn't have to shorten it down smiling smiley

Over the past months, I have come to re-appreciate this album again. My valuation of the songs is the same as a few months ago, but it's an album I can listen to with much pleasure.

And the sound of it makes it a very rewarding listen, imo. A dream for guitar-lovers thumbs up

That thought crossed my mind as well, but then I put on Sing This All Together (See What Happens).

Something happened...

Yes, me too. I really like Indian Girl. (But then, I like Sweethearts Together as well).

But I can understand that you don't like it, if you don't have a weak spot for campy schmaltz (or schmaltzy camp). I think Mick safely stays just this side of "too much", although he's on the edge.

Still, their worst ever, there is a long list of far far worse ever. Gomper, Sing Together See What Happens, On With The Show, Back To Zero, Hold Back, Sweet Neocon, Key To My Heart (or whatever the f it's called, I only listened to that thing once), ....

It took me years to fully appreciate Sweet Neo Con, but now I do - one of ABB´s highlights.

Indian Girl is the only weak spot on ER. Wonderful album, but they better should have skipped this ditty.
