In a regular "stadium" environnement with 79000 Joe Blow's and 1000 IORR types the band would be booed out of the venue after the 5th song.

In a club-gig environnement with 79 Joe Blow's and 1000 IORR types people would look at each others after the 5th song and say "maybe this setlist wasn't such a good idea after all..."

Hahaham I know that if you put this setlist on concert, it is not gonna work.

But this is an imaginary situation of pure outtakes and unreleases, what would be your setlist of unreleases songs guys?

PD: I addes Brown Sugar featuring Eric Clapton

I want to hear the Keith-LV renditions of Loving Cup and Rip This Joint

(LV = lead vocal) (just in case) (don't want to mystify unnecessarily)

I will not go to a rarities show if there's no 30 minutues nonsense-atonal jam on "Sing this all togheter"

I have seen the Stones many times and yes there are songs that I would like to here instead of the so called war horses. Thing is... that I have watched the audience and the majority of them are going crazy for the very songs that some of us wish they would play something else instead of.
......

This post says a lot well in a few words. Thanks to ttutone.

The Stones have been for the 18 years I have seen them been a band that plays to the crowded masses. That is undoubtedly Mick's business model and we're not going to change it.

So where am I going? To take this another direction maybe we (the rarities junkies) are the problem.

No matter how much we want it a show with the variety we want would not be profitable. So unless the Stones gear down to a small club/theatre tour we are probably out of luck. I can say the one time I saw them in Charlotte, NC (the smallest venue of any shows I have seen) tickets were almost impossible to get. The crowd that was there wanted the hits and hits only.

Looking back over the setlist for the past 18 years of shows I have seen the songs played total 144 with 55 of them being different.
That is pretty good variety in my book and still satisfy the masses.

19th Nervous Breakdown
All About You
All Down The Line
Anybody Seen My Baby
Beast Of Burden
Before They Make Me Run
Bitch
Brown Sugar
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
Crazy Mama
Doom & Gloom
Emotional Rescue
Flip The Switch
Get Off Of My Cloud
Gimme Shelter
Going Down
Happy
Honky Tonk Women
I Wanna Hold You
Infamy
It's Only Rock'n Roll
Jumping Jack Flash
Just My Imagination
Let's Spend The Night Together
Little Queenie
Memory Motel
Midnight Rambler
Miss You
Moonlight Mile
Night Time Is The Right Time
Oh No Not You Again
One More Shot
Out Of Control
Paint It Black
Respectable
Rough Justice
Route 66
Ruby Tuesday
Saint of Me
Satisfaction
Shattered
Shine A Light
Sister Morphine
Some Girls
Start Me Up
Sway
Sympathy For The Devil
The Worst
Tumbling Dice
Under My Thumb
When The Whip Comes Down
You Can't Always Get What You Want
You Got Me Rocking
You Got The Silver
You Gotta Move

Thanks,

Mike

Sheer fantasy? Me lucky enough to be two tables away from the Stones in, say, Buddy Guy's club. Buddy Guy tells them "Take over the stage." So—with Mick T.—they get up and do an hour-long DOWN IN THE HOLE trading licks and Mick growling and improvising. Just that one song, but loooong. Weaving and weaving and weaving, baby.

Oh please no. Mick Taylor killing this very fine song by endless noodling would break my heart. The audience would surely fall asleep after 20 minutes of boring noodling. The lucky ones who manage to stay awake, would step outside to have a smoke, a very loooong smoke. Once Taylor starts to noodle there´s no stopping him, he´d be noodling till dawn.

...but I would be glad to hear the Stones do Down In The Hole live (of course in their actual line-up). Great song form a very underrated album.

I have been listening with great enjoyment to the Stones Live at the Fonda Theater. As we all know they played the Sticky Fingers album. This show includes many songs that never get into the War Horses set list that we have been listening to for way too many years. I look at it as just one example of how much better their shows could be if they would just mix it up. My first Stones show was in 1972. Since then I have seen them over 50 times including shows in London. At my first show in Pittsburgh they played one of my favorite songs Sweet Virginia. Believe it or not I have never again in all those shows heard Sweet Virginia played live. I have also only heard Love in Vain one time as well as Shine a Light. I could go on and on with this forever but I won't. The bottom line is The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World are leaving some of their greatest accomplishments on the shelf tour after tour. I don't know how much longer this will continue but I have to believe if they are going to change the set list they better do it soon. They are not getting any younger and neither are we.

You are so right here, no matter what some folks say about the crowd getting restless whenever a non-warhorse is played, I say that's complete BS. The Stones can play plenty of other kick ass music from their catalog and play it well enough to satisfy huge audiences. All the stuff from the Fonda show was worthy of being played on the tour and it's a shame they didn't try, especially after all the SF hype. I think one of the reasons they released the Fonda show was to appease all us fans who went to see a Sticky Fingers performance and got only 2 or 3 songs.

Mick seems to have this impression that in order for a show to be great, almost every minute of it must include people jumping up and down and dancing and singing along to some uptempo rocker with no chance to catch their breath. I disagree completely and would actually love to see an intimate acoustic, sit in chairs around the mics mini set, the band really concentrating on the music.

That being said I've got zero expectations of the Stones changing a thing at this point in time. I truly believe this is their last go round and they have decided this is the way to do it, a greatest hits show with little variation. If they were doing a more diverse set I would actually have more hope that this wasn't the last time because this is just the kind of set list which signals just that, imo. They likely aren't going to do a final tour playing a bunch of songs people don't expect are they?

I love the 10-minute outtake of THE STORM so I know I'd love my above scenario, but I should have added harmonica (either Mick's or Sugar Blue's). And, no, Mick T. wouldn't be necessary.

Remember the REAL Rolling Stones? The arrogant ones? On the Marquee DVD they just announce and do songs no ones even heard of yet. And there's befuddlement and no applause from the audience, and Mick doesn't care.

gosh, I think they should completely re-think their set list. Not a single warhorse. They've got so many great songs that it would be no problem and folks would still love it.

Playing warhorses is the simplest and easiest way to fill stadiums and please audiences. And the Stones can play these warhorses with minimum rehearsals. A Stones-tour is big business with many forces involved, and these forces also insist on warhorses, because this is what the general audiences come for (and of course PAY for). This is how big money is made. A concert without all these warhorses would only leave the audiences disappointed.
