If the internet was around in the 1970s the first half of the 70s would've been:
They keep playing the same songs over and over and adding new ones and playing them over and over like they're warhorses...

At mid point, 1975-76 tours, it'd be:
What's with all these different and new songs? Kind of a long show, eh? Just a few warhorses? Really?

By 1978 it'd of been:
Holy crap! They're playing almost all of SOME GIRLS and just a few warhorses!

1981-82 it would be:
Holy crap! What a long show! So many songs; warhorses and new songs and recent songs. What an ugly stage!

1989-90:
Uhhhh. Warhorses plus some new and a couple of recent songs? Look at that stage!

1994-95:
Wow. New songs and some dusted off old ones with a few warhorses! Look at that stage!

1997-99:
Who are these guys? Great set lists, great energy, great sound. New songs with attitude, some good dusted off old ones, some warhorses. Awesome stage! And a bridge to the B-stage!

2002-03:
Uh. One new song, selected dusteds, warhorses, some never and hardly ever played songs. Pretty cool, really. Nice arena stage.

2005-07:
Huh? What new album? Oh well, warhorses. Fugly stage.

2012-15
Uhhhh. Warhorses plus, at times, 2 new songs or 1 new song, one/two song(s) from the 1990s but majority being songs up to 1981? WHAT ARE THEY DOING? Oh yeah... warhorses.

if they tour the US next summer they could actually hit major cities twice (SF, LA, NY, chicago, philly, boston), playing a month apart, similar to the chicago no security shows. if they did they could trade out a lot songs with songs that were internet vote songs the last two (2014/15) summers. imagination, beast, street fightin', some girls, shine a light were played great.

brown sugar
around & around
you got me rockin'
only rock n roll/let it bleed
starfooker/shattered
rain fall down (good idea for outdoor shows in the summer)
no expectations/saint of me
love in vain/you gotta move/little red rooster
imagination/whip come down
let's spend the night together/bitch
live with me/start me up
happy/folsom prison blues
before they make me run
you can't always get/can't you hear me knocking
tumblin' dice
out of control
honky tonk
miss you
midnight rambler/sympathy
jumpin' jack flash
encore
satisfaction
street fightin' man

It is all about the dollars. Warhorses = $$$$

It was all about the gradually and increasingly upcoming laziness and loss of curiosity on the part of the Stones audiences towards newer Rolling Stones music that over time made the decisionmakers in the band to adapt to the lowest common multiple in their audiences' wishes about setlists.

Edit: I substituted the concept 'multiple' for 'denominator' as leading to a better analogy for the point of view that I wanted to express.

They could play more deep cuts, but I don't think it was "easy" for them playing MM, CYHMK and Bitch regularly.

But do you think it would get easier, if they played them more regularly?

Is Bitch that hard to play?

Let's say it's easy to trainwreck.

I think it's hard for Mick to sing MM and CYHMK every night.

Every night? Every show usually means 3-4 days inbetween.

I decided it wouldn't be appropriate to start a new discussion, but I would be interested to know:

Did anyone see or hear any approval or disapproval from attendees for songs on the Zip Code Tour?

Rumor has it that the Stones are meeting in the fall to discuss possible tour strategies for 2016.

I suggest that we piggy back that and call a meeting of IORR membership in late fall to discuss Set List Disparagement strategies for 2016.

We need to be prepared to start whining about the set list from the moment the first note is played in 2016.

Who's in?

Good point. If we are going to hold past transgressions against them though we better take "let it bleed" and "rocks off" off the list too...

Not all 3 chord songs are as easy as they look!

1. This is not the Grateful Dead. If the Stones have not varied the set list much in the last 20 years, the Dead has not varied it's list all in that time -- no shows, and no setlist, since Garcia's death until the farewell shows this year.

2. What the Stones play is not as important as how they play. I'd rather hear Satisfaction well played than to see them screw up "Connection" like they did in Oakland in the early 2000s.

3. Get over it. Grab a beer, put on High Tide and Green Grass. Hit "shuffle" so the songs are not in the same order you memorized them.

4. Rock on.

4.Rock On. smileys with beer

Could be a working title for the 2023 BoxSet.

Plea to the Stones - It's time to break up the 'warhorse' 2nd half of the show
Posted by: Silver Dagger ()
Date: August 17, 2015 12:28

Anyone else feel that the predictability of the 2nd half of the set is lessening the enjoyment of the show overall?

Since 2002 we've more or less had the same run out after Keith's mid-section performance.

They could close their eyes and phone in the songs after Keith's set...Midnight Rambler, Miss You, Gimme Shelter, Start Me Up, Sympathy For The Devil, Brown Sugar, You Can't Always Get What You Want and Satisfaction.

They don't need to take these songs out of the set, just mix them up a bit more and maintain an element of surprise. This is about the 5th tour now that they've pretty much kept the set format the same.

Even the number of songs they bring in for that changeable 4 song section in the first half of the set is predictable. C'mon guys - you have so many songs to draw on, just shake it up a bit.

You hit on the nail; that is the biggest issue with the set list dilemma.

They will never change that, because the run of the songs is very well composed by the musical director, every song is a further step towards the final climax. Change it and you only ruin the flow. The Stones know better than we poor souls do. Trust the Stones, they know what they do.

No offense- I disagree. Of course flow seems to be the "elephant in the room". I see it differently. It doesn't matter as much as it seems. I think most in this discussion would like to see some more 60s stuff and variety. Silver Dagger is correct. The last half of the set list needs to change. I don't even have to mention the predictable songs.
