On the Bigger Bang tour they played a lot of warhorses, but fewer than now. If we take a random 2007 setlist as example (San Sebastian), they played 9 warhorses:

Start Me Up
Tumbling Dice
It's Only Rock N Roll
Satisfaction
Honky Tonk Women
Sympathy For The Devil
Paint It Black
Brown Sugar
Jumping Jack Flash

And 10 other songs:

Let's Spend The Night Togehter
Rough Justice
All Down The Line
You Got Me Rocking
Ruby Tuesday
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
I'll Go Crazy
You Got The Silver
Wanna Hold You
It's All Over Now

I don't get why they need to play 13 warhorses nowadays when the casual fans was just as happy with fewer warhorses on past tours.

I've noticed Mick is singing JJF differently...instead of shouting the first line of every verse, he's easing into them.

He used to hit that BORN in "I was BORN!! in a crossfire hurricane!" a lot harder.

He's getting closer to the real melody. Still a way to go, though smiling smiley

What's more, he doesn't even bother with the chorus anymore. He practically just says "But it's all-" the rest is Bernard

That doesn't bother me too much, but on a somewhat related note: I cannot STAND the way Bernard and Sasha go up into a super high register for the "IT'S A GAS!" refrain on the outro.

Bernard and Lisa started singing it that way on the Licks tour I believe, and it's always sounded absurd to me. I much preferred the way they sang it before, but obviously it's the way Mick wants it sung.

DEmerson, I was thinking of posting something similar to your post too. I’ve only been going to shows since 2013, so all I’ve ever experienced is the so-called “Warhorse Era”. But even if you break down each of the 4 concerts I’ve been too, anyone can see how different each show was. It’s only 4 - but I apologize in advanced for the length:

It is interesting to see many comments on the set lists. Still, does anyone really think the Stones, at their age and time in their career, really care about fans who count 19 or 20 songs, or who don't want to hear this or that song?

They are still the most successful rock act on the planet. They fill up stadiums with their current concept. For me this is easy: Never change a winning team.
You are quite right--they DON'T care. Interesting that you ask that.

Most acts focus on their core group of fans; Stones have built their second careers on the casual and/or big event fan.
I vary from awe at what they've built, to disappointment they weren't more adventurous.
For example, the discussion about 'Slave' makes you realize they could have done some shows based around their B&B funk songs, along with Just My Imagination and Motown covers, Beast of Burden, the reggae Start Me Up, some of their early R&B/soul covers and just killed it. Brought in some top notch session men and/or guests to help out, released a live album. It would have been incredible.
They could have done shows built around their C/W songs. Or a punk rock live set. Again, with unique live albums. So many lost opportunities.

Yes, they don´t care. In Europe it´s worse than in the US.
Since my first Stones-Concert in 1990 we got every tour a great new set filled wih surprises. Remember the changes from 1998 to 1999 for instance...

It´s fact, that they are sellers and we are consumers, that pay a lot of cash and time, to get a bunch of songs played live.
Since London 2013 (it changed after the US tour 2013), they always serve the same meal (with few exceptions: Fonda, Desert Trip, all in the US)

If there are guys that are satisfied with the always same 19 songs, ok, hard to believe. Every few gigs, we get ONE lost pearl that keeps me online.

Am I a "setlist-whiner"? Probably.
Am I greatful, that they are still on the road? For sure.

These were the concertes since 2013, I attended. I marked the rarities, you see, almost the same sets, same orders.

Low point: In Stuttgart 2018 we got almost the same as in Zurich (neighborhood) the year before, except LSTNT and the usual Keith-set. Both times LARS as rarity.
A shame.

Correct, they obviously don't care much, and it's why i vowed to stop going, back in 1999. They also obviously don't miss me ... as he pointed out, they still fill up the stadiums, even without me.

I think some of you are missing Bjornulf’s point.

Of course the Stones care about their performance and entertaining the fans. What they don’t care about are the fans who are complaining they only played 19 songs instead of 20, or complain that they should be playing Citadel instead of Miss You.

Those are nitpicking types of complaints.

The term 'rarity' says it all, really. Playing a song that is not part of the set in stone setlist is called a 'rarity', think of it.

LSTNT and YGMR are also warhorses, not always played but very often (every second show). I agree, the Bigger Bang Tour was more interesting despite the sub-standard new rockers. Although three or four shows 2019 had indeed great setlists, although almost all played songs are at least 40 years old meanwhile. Even Harlem Shuffle is a 60's song.

No, they are not! Nobody expects them to play a rarities/B-side set but on the other hand it is very disappointing that they do not play a rarity here and there (like they did, for instance, in 2012). Did fans really walk out when they played "Dancing with Mr D" last year? did they walk out during "Mercy mercy"?

Of course some somgs would not work live in a Stadium but others would.

Re: The Rolling Stones set list discussions

I doubt anyone expects to hear Citadel. About 19 or 20 songs, seems we can expect them to have one or two more songs at the start of a tour? They've done this before. However I would feel cheated if they played 20 on most nights but did 19 at a concert I attended. I believe what BV wanted to say is they've perfected the warhorse setlist so why deviate from it. Plus they're performing well. Maybe they really are impressing the tourist or casual fans. After all we're going to show up no matter what. All these factors means little or no deep cuts unfortunately. What can a poor boy do!

Okey, let's narrow it down to where change can happen:

- Number two song which is either of LSTNT/IORR/YGMR
- The fan choice song
- The number 4/5/6 song
- B-stage: PWF/Angie/LIB/ DF/ SV
- Keith set: Either SA/YGTS/BTMMR

That's it.
