Yes studio version is A+. thumbs up

Live during the last few decades it seems to have lost something, but seeing it recently was almost like hearing it for the first time on the radio back in '74...well not quite, but it really was good!

I wonder what instruments make the studio version superior. I'm not a musician.

For one, I think the acoustic guitars add some warmth and sublety on the studio version vs. the all electric live versions which are basically a loud thrash and romp.

The vocals i.e Jagger to me. The guitar licks have been played a zillion times before. I'm not a musician either.

NOT A BIG DEAL AS THAT ONE HAS ALWAYS SEEMED TO START OUT DIFFERENT SINCE IT FIRST SHOWED UP ON THE 75 TOTA.

Is the studio version actually “studio” though? I think I read it was recorded in Ronnie Woods house with Mick and some other musicians, they kept that take and polished it in the studio or overdubbed it? I think it was Keith said the original take had the right feel so they built on it. It seems the intro has an acoustic or dobro or something playing behind the intro. The slide intro I can’t identify what type of guitar it could be.

Sounded fine the few times I heard it last year and I thought Keef sounded great on it. The intro is obviously never the same as the album, but once it gets going it’s sounding great.

"It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It)" was great as a closer at Fenway Park in 2005.

People tend to overlook that.

Not bad on the 2002 tour either.

2014 '14 on Fire Tour' IORR was probably the best in general since Richards fell out of the tree in 2006.

The one from Sunday at Gillette Stadium was probably the worst I have heard it out of roughly 14 times in person.

Taylor calls it a parody but,it was more of a tribute to the Chuck Berry style and Jagger's response to critics of 'Goats Head Soup'.

It would be interesting after all these years if they were to try playing it in "E" like the record.

It's always been played in "B" live , which gives it a totally different feel even before you consider the various tempo changes over time.

Presumably Mick felt "B" a more comfortable key...

...but I've never really understood the decision as the song would hardly be a challenge for him to sing in any key.

Nice list here, but the challenge is to come up with a 20-song set, to match the number twenty that they're currently doing.
Quote
Stonesfan2146
They should keep the acustic set but I think it's not right there just squeezed in somewhere in the first half of the set. I think this would work pretty well:

1. Street Fighting Man
2. It's Only Rock'n'Roll
3. Tumbling Dice
4. Live With Me (vote)
5. Ride 'Em On Down
6. Heartbreaker
7. You Can't Always Get What You Want
8. Monkey Man
9. Honky Tonk Woman
10. Miss You
--- Band intro
11. Slipping Away
12. Before They Make Me Run
13. Angie (B-stage)
14. Play With Fire (B-stage)
15. Dead Flowers (B-stage)
16. Sympathy For The Devil
17. Paint It Black
18. Midnight Rambler
19. Start Me Up
20. Jumping Jack Flash
21. Brown Sugar
--- Band off stage
22. Gimme Shelter
23. Satisfaction

Thanks, well they did do 22 in Stadtpark, Hamburg, I think they could do 23, even 24 now if they wanted to. in 2012 they wanted to start the tour with a 25 song set. They would definetely be able to play that set winking smiley
If I had to make a cut at 20 songs, it would really be a challenge. I think there are too many of the standart songs in this set to make it 20 songs.
They would have to cut it down to like this?

1. Street Fighting Man
2. Start Me Up
3. Tumbling Dice
4. Live With Me (vote)
5. Monkey Man
6. You Can't Always Get What You Want
7. Miss You
8. Honky Tonk Woman
9. Gimme Shelter
--- Band intro
10. Slipping Away
11. Before They Make Me Run
12. Angie (B-stage)
13. Play With Fire (B-stage)
14. Dead Flowers (B-stage)
15. Sympathy For The Devil
16. Paint It Black
17. Midnight Rambler
18. Jumping Jack Flash
19. Brown Sugar
--- Band off stage
20. Satisfaction

Re: The Rolling Stones set list discussions

1) Street Fighting Man / IORR (rotating)
2) Start Me Up
3) Sad Sad Sad / Undercover of the Night / Love is Strong (rotating)
4) Brown Sugar
5) When the Whip comes Down / It's All Over Now / Mixed Emotions / Harlem Shuffle / Hand of Fate (vote)
6) You can't Always Get What You Want
7) Let it Bleed / Factory Girl / Fool to Cry (b-stage)
8) Shine a Light / Love in Vain / Play With Fire (b-stage)
9) Sympathy for the Devil
10) Gimme Shelter
--- Band intro
11) You Don't Have to Mean It / Thief in the Night (rotating)
12) Happy / Before They Make Me Run / Connection (rotating)
13) Out of Control
14) Miss You / Emotional Rescue (rotating)
15) Tumbling Dice
16) Paint it Black
17) Honkey Tonk Women
18) Jumping Jack Flash
--- Band off stage
19) Midnight Rambler
20) Satisfaction

This is the bare minimum that I believe they should be doing. Maybe not as many songs in the rotating slots because of their ages but, this should be the template for stadium concerts.

The song live has tons of great Chuck Berry licks in it. When it comes to Keith, you live for those Chuck Berry licks: it’s the roots of his guitar playing. He has stepped up the solo for this tour too. You must not know anything about guitar playing if you think he sucks on it. It’s always interesting when a non musician gives his or her take on a live performance.

If you think this is a great solo then I presume you don't know so much about guitar playing yourself. Keith starts off the solo by playing in the wrong key and the rest of the solo isn't... very good either.
Whoo boy...it's amazing how you miss things when you're there live and in the moment.

I didn't think it was a particularly good version when I was there, but it didn't feel as off as it does now that I'm listening to it with some distance. That is pretty bad.

Seems like Mick is trying to tell Keith he is in the wrong key, pointing down down down.

I agree mostly with your suggestions, just with a few changes. I think IORR and Satisfaction should to be scrapped from the setlist, and SFM is a good opener but fits even better later in the warhorse section. This would be my suggestion:

1. Brown Sugar
2. Let's Spend The Night Together
3. Sad Sad Sad / Rough Justice / Flip The Switch (rotating)
4. Gimme Shelter
5. Rocks Off / Monkey Man / Harlem Shuffle / Live With Me (Vote song)
6. Ride 'Em On Down / Blue And Lonesome
7. Midnight Rambler
8. You Can't Always Get What You Want
9. Sweet Virginia / Let It Bleed / Memory Motel
10. Play With Fire / Shine A Light / Waiting On A Friend
11. Sympathy For The Devil
--- Band intro
12. The Worst / This Place Is Empty
13. Before They Make Me Run / Can't Be Seen
14. Tumbling Dice
15. Paint It Black
16. You Got Me Rocking
17. Honky Tonk Women
18. Start Me Up
19. Street Fighting Man
--- Band off stage
20. Jumping Jack Flash

Talking about The Rolling Stones and skills 2019 - is like having a serious discussion about how Diego Maradona should act when he is playing football with his grandchildren in the backyard...

The Stones has never been about chops and impressive soloing. Keith's skills has not deteriorated much the last 10 years. He always makes a few mistakes here and there. Overall the band sounds good and mistakes are few and far apart.

Mistakes were always a part of it. This is R n R, not a piano concert by Rachmaninoff. At least it makes sure that the playing is actually LIVE. You can´t say that of many of today´s superstars.

Well, I'm gonna play this game and dream on about the set.

5. She's a Rainbow (or alternative) - Vote Song
6. Miss You
7. Paint It Black
8. Midnight Rambler
9. Honky Tonk Women
--- Band Intros
10. You Got the Silver (or alternative) - Keith Richards on Lead Vocals
11. Happy (or alternative) - Keith Richards on lead vocals
12. Street Fighting Man
13. You Can't Always Get What You Want
--- Band walks to a B-stage
14. Under my Thumb (or alternative) - B-Stage
15. Play With Fire (or alternative) - B-Stage

16. Sympathy for the Devil
17. Brown Sugar
18. Jumpin' Jack Flash
--- Band off the stage
19. Gimme Shelter
20. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

Sorry, but this would not work as good as the sets they do. They always manage to keep the energy level high, even with the few slow numbers/ballads they so, as they are carefully placed with in the set. And it's not only the tempo of the song, it's also the mood, style and rhythm that they consider when putting a setlist together and they're pretty good at it.

Please people! What do you expect? Just look at that bullshit setlists from Oro-Medonte or New Orleans. Even the no-warhorses are more than well known. Down to 19 songs. Nobody really needs the only rarity, Sad Sad Sad, although it seems to work live. No Harlem Shuffle, not even in New Orleans. We're back in reality I guess. Creating great fantastic setlists for them doesn't make much sense. It won't happen anyway. They are a Greatest Hits act now which has nothing to do with the 21st century. The will never play old insider favourites like Coming Down Again, let alone Had It With You. Anyway, IMHO 2018 was more interesting than 2017 and the first shows of 2019 more interesting than 2018. Better than nothing. But I don't expect many surprises for the remaining 11 shows (maybe in New Jersey?). The main reason they still tour is making as much money as possible. They have to attract as much "average" "fans" as possible which means: 85-90 % warhorses and well known standards/ pseudo-rarities. - As Billy Preston said: "That's life. You gotta deal with it."

There was reasonable speculation that they would do Time Is On My Side because of Irma Thomas. Aside from what all Mick said, the band didn't acknowledge New Orleans' history in music at all. They certainly don't have to, it's their show. I'm going to guess it would've been nice but whatever. It's 2019, not 1981.

Next stop: the Indian Casino Circuit....or Branson, MO. ?? from what I've been hearing and reading (and I've no reason to doubt) the band belongs alongside Lynryd Skynyrd, The Moody Blues, Styx, Kansas, Jethro Tull, Three Dog Night, and all the rest just trying to make some last cash before...um..well you know...retirement. I certainly never thought THE STONES would end up a live greatest hits jukebox but it happens to a lot of ..er..artists. that said i'm still going to see them at two upcoming gigs and I will reserve my personal judgement until the dust settles. And PS: Are the band even cognizant of Irma Thomas or anything at all to do with whatever city they are in..anymore? Doubtful.

Last night while making dinner I played FLASHPOINT for the first time in years without skipping anything except the intro.

I laughed as I started to recall the songs on the New Orleans show and it's practically a slimmed down 1989 set list, thankfully missing UOTN, Harlem Shuffle, RAAHP and Ruby Tuesday among a couple others (and fortunately they did not do IORR).

Then I started counting... the newest song in the 2019 set is from 30 years ago.
