at the moment the best live version with Mick Taylor.

I think it's fantastic they must play Sway in the 2015 tour.

Arrgh, if this is the best Sway they can do live then they should never touch it again. This is embarrassing stuff, totally devoid of the magic of the studio version. Borderline train-wreck if you ask me. Sorry.

Paul Buckmaster who played/arranged strings in this track as well as Moonlight Mile also did so on Hard Woman, one of the best Jagger solo ballads

I agree, but it must have felt like a coïtus interruptus for Taylor. We have to give the Stones that one.

It's not even among the five best songs on SF. But it's a good performance by Mick and Taylor.

And those would have to be:

Brown Sugar
Can't You Hear Me Knocking?
Dead Flowers
Wild Horses
Moonlight Mile

It breaks my heart not to include IGTB, Bitch or YGM in there...

Swap DF for IGTB.

Almost all are great songs, and I hesitate to put one above another on that particular album. I do think Sway is a minor masterpiece though, and it's distinctiveness makes it worthy of consideration as something unique, whether or not it's as "good" as the five songs considered "better" by some.

Re: Track Talk: Sway

I agree. Most of SF is pure excellence.

Sway is an amazing song. I was laid off in June of 2014 (I'm now working for the same crazy place that laid me off). The fist t song I listened to after I got the bad news was Sway. It helped me get through the crap and move me to the other side. One of my very favorites. And that's all I'm gonna say about that. cool smiley
It steals my heart away.

Jagger ruined the end. Good grief, yeah, that is pretty bad. There's no life to it, they're just plodding through it.

Sf is certainly an incredible album, arguably their best. I've always liked Sway and have considered it one of their greatest tunes.

This song could have been perfect, but I HATE Jagger's voice on this track. He's overrated as a singer, and underrated as a lyricist. Sometimes he sounds like a crying baby or a spoiled kid. The first minute of the song is boring.

Hopkins and Taylor's contributions are the true highlights of Sway

wtf? I guess everyone has different tastes but in my opinion, Jagger is really singing on this one, showing some emotion, much better than his forced approach on many other tracks. Between this track and Let it Loose, MJ had rarely showed as much emotion before or since. Just the way he holds the note while singing "notion" is about as good as we can ever expect from him. Curious as to which tracks you actually like MJ's singing?

peace

The single best example of why Jagger/Taylor should have created more songs, and should consider it for a new album.

I agree on the first point.

I doubt either could get it done 45 years later, however.

Wow, agree, to me a Jagger vocal highlight, along with Moonlight Mile. Can't see how anyone can put down Jagger's vocals here, but like you said, different tastes.

imo Jagger is a bad singer. All the best rock vocalists (e.g. the underrated Billy Idol) know that he can't sing. actually he's not that bad when he sounds ironic or cynical but when he tries to sing ballads he's terrible!!!! he has a hangdog voice!!!! When he tries to show emotions does he really think he's in a Racine's tragedy?

That's why my favourite Stones album is Beggars Banquet and not Sticky Fingers

I'm not saying he's not talented because he was a great lyricist, and he's charismatic, but yes, as a singer he's terrible. his voice was the worst part of the RS music... nowadays his voice save the RS shows because Keith richards is even worse...

He's OK as a pop singer, boring as a blues singer. Actually he's not the only rock singer who sounds bad and I love his falsetto on Fool To Cry.

You need to listen to Moonlight Mile, Wild Horses, Angie, Lady Jane and As Tears Go By continuously for a day or two. Then you can come back smiling smiley

YES his voice is great on Lady Jane and As Tears Go By, because he doesn't have the hangdog voice he has on Moonlight Mile/Winter (which are my two favourite Stones songs... But I love the string arrangement, not Jagger's voice)

It is about taste, yes, but to me the sentence in bold reads something like a statement that Jimi Hendrix Experience would be a very good band, apart from that terrible solo guitar, but having so great song material.

Winter, Moonlight Mile, and Sway are real. Memory Motel is where he started to parody himself on ballads, imo, and he has done so ever since.

Yeah Tele, you are right. Just listened to Memory Motel again and sure enough Mick's vocals are definitely forced and exaggerated. Hard to describe but parody of himself is about as good of a description as I've heard.

I wonder what song/sound he is trying to replicate? I get the feeling he has listened to a whole lot of himself. He must have decided that was the sound that he likes and exemplifies his singing because he sure has repeated it alot in the years since. He needs to get out of his head and back into his heart like he obviously was with Sway. Good thing he is such a good showman and dancer...grinning smiley

Another interpretation than "parody of himself" could be a fright with Mick of ending up as pathetic by being all to sincere. Besides, wishing to express more nuanced feelings, where, for instance, apparent irony is only one layer.

Just to weigh in on this Jagger as a singer. First, for someone to say that "all of the best rock vocalists know that he can't sing" is amazing to me -- thank God he's no Billy Idol.

I think Mick is fabulous on Sway -- he really gives everything he has on this one and conveys real emotion. Along with Taylor's solo, he makes this song special.

Having said that, he definitely does NOT do that live -- I can't even get around to blaming Keith or Ronnie or anyone else, here -- Mick fails to sell this song live.
