What do you think stickydion . . .should they play it??

They should drop the recorded intro. I don't care who the band is, a recorded track in a live performance just takes away from the power of the show.

For the length of that song and the way it DRAGS in concert these days, I say play 2 songs, both obscure tunes, in it's place! Bring on " Connection" or " One Hit To The Body" or " Winter". " Sway" or " Worried About You!".

Stickydion - do you have a stammer? smiling smiley

For me, its one of the 'essentials'. Its always been a highlight of any show I've been to and I've never got tired of hearing it

Yeah, without a doubt they should drop one of the most famous songs in the history of rock and roll. While they're at it, they should drop Satisfaction, Jumping Jack Flash, Brown Sugar, Gimme Shelter, Street Fighting Man, Start Me Up, Tumbling Dice, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Miss You, Angie, & Happy! They should drop these famous songs and play the obscure ones that only the die-hard fans know. Maybe they could play the entire Dirty Work album.....please leave out Harlem Shuffle.......it was too big of a hit. We only want rarities on this tour. Open up with Coming Down Again, surge with Indian Girl and take it on home with a rousing version of Fingerprint File....maybe Down in The Hole as the encore!

Cant drop it. Its a great song - the one song I would hate to see dropped out of all the Warhorses. The crowd loved it at Twickenham and Wembley, and I dont see it getting dropped..if you are going to rest one Id go for Tumbling dice..get that replaced by 'Sway' and I would be a happy chappy...but I must say if the did not play SFTD I would be disapointed.

Now, 8 years later, Keith has even more problems with the solo. They should go back to the B2B version of the song. It sounds very good. And Keith have to practice his solos in this song winking smiley

It was great on YY, LYL and Flashpoint.................since then.......better bury it or play it properly coño!!!!

Let Ronnie and Mick Taylor do the solos and it would be great. Keith's efforts on the last tour were really awkward. If we get again one of the numerous "sample SFTD's", that we must hear since 89, I would vote for dropping.

I saw it once where it evolved into a big tribal jam at the end. Very cool/

It was around 1975-1976 i suppose

The solo isn't that important for the song, with its current arrangement.

However, the intro when Chuck is jamming honky tonk-style, instead of just playing what Nicky so brilliantly did on the album, makes it a worse experience for me...

But if Keith hits the wrong notes in his solo it's hard to listen to the song.
Nowadays it sounds very empty. Some rhythm instruments are missing.

and the woo-woo ting has turned into a ridiculous arrangment, just hear/see this thing in the Scorcese's film

But it sounded quite well by that time. Now bum and out of tune notes rule KR's solos

I wouldn't mind if they dropped it either. They should mix the set up more so it isn't a predictable list of warhorses after the Keith slot. It's got a bit stale.

That's true (PPV, Glasto, Hyde Park).

However, on the shows I attended his solos were more down in the mix. Same with Satisfaction.

Here's a typical 1969 SFTD solo by Keith, btw. It's not really that different - a bit more attack, perhaps:

But Keith is not playing best today (and not bad) and we all hope that he will play even better on the upcoming 2014 tour.

SFTD even was the encore at some shows in 1999:

The set list - May 31-1999:

Jumping Jack Flash
You Got Me Rocking
Bitch
Respectable
Gimme Shelter
Honky Tonk Women
Ruby Tuesday
Saint of Me
Some Girls
Out Of Control
Paint It Black
-- Introductions --
All About You (Keith)
Before They Make Me Run (Keith)
Route 66 (B-stage)
Get Off Of My Cloud (B-stage)
Midnight Rambler (B-stage)
Tumbling Dice
It's Only Rock'n Roll
Start Me Up
Brown Sugar
Sympathy for the Devil (encore)

That is imo one of the few warhorses that they don't need to stop, not only because it is a good song, a kind of Holy tune, but also because this song is the symbol for a kind of counter culture. This song has a social and political charge and value.

It should only be played in a proper way.

This means:
a. No mega theatrical attendance on stage of Jagger;
b. An acceptable solo of Keith
c. No ‘honky tonk Chuck approach'
d. No backing vocals

It’s rock and roll, no circus!

So back to basics: rough!

For a discussion on the guitar playing of Keith (solo) in SFTD, I refer to my topic ' Mick Taylor and the next Stones Tour '.

When Keith is playing his solo on SFTD it's something different to all other musicians. No one can replace him on his part on Sympathy. If Mick Taylor will play it, it will be different to the stuff we heard over the last 20 years.

Sympathy needs to be refreshed and rethought. It hasn't changed in arrangement or show placement since 1989. The only slight exception was when it was used as an encore in the 1999 "No Security" shows.

"Sympathy'" should be used as an opener. "Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed...."

The crowds seem to love it and woo woo's throughout the entire song. Personally I say either drop it or make it dirty and evil. It's been just a rythmic workout for the boys since 89.

The version from Hyde Park 69 is 18 minutes long with real drummers doing the intro. That's cool. I really can't stand the pre-recorded intro.

The click track beat is horrible and artificial. Charlie is suppose to be double snare hitting pushing the beat forward. Currently it's laid back. There is no freedom to let the song have a life of its own. Perhaps Keith can't carry the song anymore. This is a song in my opinion that can push the beat ahead if everyone is behind it building to a more climax of energy.

Ron Plays lead, or MT, Keith rhythm. SFTD sounds great again.
