Lou Reed Remembered

Film tribute to Lou Reed, who died in October, which looks at the extraordinarily transgressive life and career of one of rock 'n' roll's true originals.

With the help of friends, fellow musicians, critics and those who have been inspired not only by his music but also by his famously contrary approach to almost everything, the documentary looks at how Reed not only helped to shape a generation but also helped to create a truly alternative, independent rock scene, while also providing New York with its most provocative and potent soundtrack.

With contributions from Mick Rock, Maureen Tucker, Boy George, Thurston Moore, Debbie Harry, Holly Woodlawn, Doug Yule, Steve Hunter and Paul Auster.

I wonder if anyone else has pondered the identity of the "fat blonde actress" in Lou Reed's Velvet-era song New Age. Some sources say it's Kim Novak, others say it's Shelley Winters....

Or was it Shirley MacLaine, who has admitted to having had "quite a relationship" with Robert Mitchum?

Are these actual movie titles being named in the fourth line of the song?

(Loaded album version)

Can I have your autograph
He said to the fat blonde actress
You know I've seen every movie you've been in
From Paths of Pain to Jewels of Glory
And when you kissed Robert Mitchum
Gee but I thought you'd never catch him

Over the hill right now
And you're looking for love
You're over the hill right now
And you're looking for love
I'll come running to you honey when you want me
I'll come running to you honey when you want me

Can I have your autograph
He said to the fat blonde actress
You know I know everything you've done
Anyway I hate divorces
To the left is a marble shower
It was fun even for an hour

Your're over the hill right now
And you're looking for love
You're over the hill right now
And you're looking for love
I'll come running to you honey when you want me
I'll come running to you honey when you want me

Something's got a hold on me
And I don't know what

Something's got a hold on me
And I don't know what

It's the beginning of a new age
It's the beginning of a new age

It's a new age
----------------------------------

The earlier version with different lyrics, which was about his then current girlfriend Shelly Albin.

(1969 Live With Lou Reed Version)

Waiting for the phone to ring
Diamond necklace on my shoulder
Waiting for the phone to ring
Lipstick on my naked shoulder
It seems to be my fancy to make it with
Franky and Sue Ann

Over the bridge we go
Looking for love
Over the bridge we go
Looking for love
I'll come running to you, hey baby if you want me
I'll come running to you, baby if you want me

Looking at my hands today
Look to me that they're made of ivory
I had a funny call today
Someone died and someone married
you know that it's my fancy to make it with
Franky and Sue Ann

Over the bridge they go
Looking for love
Over the bridge we go
Looking for love
I'll come running to you, hey baby if you want me
I'll come running to you, baby if you want me

Something's got a hold on me
And I don't know what

Something's got a hold on me
And I don't know what

It's the beginning of a new age
It's the beginning of a new age

It's new age

"Franky and Sue Ann," huh? The lyric on the 1969 Live version is "You know that it's my fancy/To make it with Frank and Nancy," as in Sinatra. Around about that time, Frank and Nancy had a minor hit on a duet, Something Stupid.

Just finished reading Victor Bockris Lou Reed: what a dissapointment... bad effort. I hope Anthony DeCurtis gets it right.

Whenever you see the name Victor Bockris, expect a cobbled-together mish mash or Creem and Rolling Stone excerpts from 40 years ago. He's a total hack.

Patti Smith book wasn't so bad, I enjoyed that ... I haven't read Lou Reed book but he did write good book on Patti.

Did Lou ever write his own book? Just realizing I'd love to hear him write a book about himself in the vein of Dylan and Neil Young, although I don't think he ever did.

Regarding Victor Bockris, John Cale seems to like him, since Bockris was invited to participate in an hour-long authorized video documentary on Cale from 1998 (directed by James Marsh).

Regarding Victor Bockris and Lou - I haven't read his Lou biography but i just realized that the fine Velvet's book that I own..is called UPTIGHT and suprise, suprise..it's written by Victor Bockris, it's not bad either...so I can now say that I've read two fine books written by him: Patti Smith biography and Uptight - the velvet underground book.

Yes, I have that book Uptight. Very well done, and also very welcome at the time, as there weren't actually any other books on the band at that time. Still an excellent, authoritative read on the subject.

in this video - check out around 13.44 Hal Wilner plays early Lou Reed demo tape -it comes from may 1965 Pickwick studio sessions...before there even was any Velvet Underground. It's the first ever recording of "Heroin"

Check out the melody and rhythm in the main guitar riff to the song Only When I Dream by The Bobby Fuller Four (famous for the 1966 hit I Fought The Law)--I believe this was the musical inspiration behind Lou Reed's song Vicious from Transformer. Reed practically copied the opening riff chord for chord.

Wow -- good catch! Not necessarily a surprise though -- Lou name checks Bobby Fuller on "Dirt" from "Street Hassle".

He either truly loved or truly hated the Bobby Fuller band lol!

Well, I think it should mean that The Bobby Fuller Four should be included among the pro-punk bands of the era--considering that they were later covered by the Clash and that it's such a shame Bobby Fuller and his band were so short-lived, because considering what a great rock songwriter Bobby Fuller was that he would likely have been such a major force throughout that decade and beyond had he lived.

Just a few days ago I was lucky to find an out-of-print Rhino disc that I've been enjoying, and they had quite a number of great songs....

Interview clip of Lou Reed with Bill Boggs on the day of his 1983 performance at New York's The Bottom Line.

LR: "....I never liked the Beatles....I never really liked any British group. I don't think the British should play rock n roll.

BB: "What do you think they should play?"

LR: "I don't think they should play anything."

He likes the Stones, though--and some of Ray Davies....
