These two issues are of course connected, since by and large it's the people that complain endlessly about 'whiners' that can be found trolling in the MT thread, trying to provoke arguments and flame wars in the hope that BV will shut it down.

Naw he won't shut it down (again). He was nice enough to reopen it once and without it people would likely be starting a bunch of new Taylor threads and Taylor's name would pop up in more threads than it already has.

But I certainly know what you mean. I harmlessly mentioned that ADTL could have used Taylor's help on the Orlando live show thread (it could have) and was totally jumped on! My intention wasn't to disrupt the thread but I'm afraid the reactions to Taylor's name did. Go figure.

peace

I know, and credit to BV for having kept it open all this time despite certain posters' best efforts. You're absolutely right, the defensiveness on display is remarkably childish - or perhaps I'm just unusual, being able to enjoy music regardless of others' critical comments on it.

My complaint is I'm a bit sweaty right now. It's hot outside, and if that wasn't bad enough I'm watching US/Nigeria with an overheating laptop on my lap.

Something's got to give.

Set List if the Stones adopted a "no repeat" from the previous show
Posted by: JackStraw ()

Ok - I don't know about everyone else but the same setlist night after night is just weak in my opinion; considering the extensive catalog they can pull from. The greatest thing about experiencing a Grateful Dead show was the fact that you were always sure to witness a "new setlist" at each show. Granted you may hear a few repeats during a Tour and some of the songs and placement were predictable within the set. However, there was always a sense of excitement and surprise as the show played out.
The Stones have always held the #1 spot on my Favorite Bands List and my first show was back in 1981 and I am grateful that they are still touring and I can afford to see them. However, nothing would please me more than to attend a show and hear a Set list with ZERO Warhorses. I know they have it in them and I do not think the majority of fans would leave disappointed. What do you think? And what would your "Dream Setlist" look like?

Here is my Set List (If I had it my way) for Nashville:

Jiving Sister Fanny
Stray Cat Blues
Hand of Fate
Casino Boogie
Beast of Burden
Dance (Part 2)
Plundered My Soul
Slave
Let It Bleed
****Set Break******
Heaven>The Last Time
Oh No, Not You Again
Slipping Away
Before They Make Me Run
It Must Be Hell
Star Star

CYHMK
Shine A Light
When the Whip Comes Down
Sister Morphine

Soul Survivor

It would not look like that. It would mostly look like what they have played over the last few weeks.

That's why I invested a 1,000 bucks to travel to Pittsburgh.

Jack Straw, looks like we may have parallel feelings regarding the Stones and also appreciating the joy of seeing the Grateful Dead live. It's almost a curse being a fan of both bands because their live show processes are so opposite. I'll just say that your set list is fun although Star Star would be my first set closer....haha. And the Heaven>Last Time Set 2 opener is a hoot. It's a blessing that the Stones are playing so well right now and looking forward to Buffalo, warhorses and all!!!

What a ground breaking thread eye rolling smiley This setlist would please YOU. About 1% of people in attendance would be quite pleased, but would complain that 2 or 3 of their favourite songs were not played. 99% of people in the audience would be pissed that they paid BIG bucks and didn't get a single song they would be familiar with. Get over yourself, The Stones don't play a private show for you, they play for 50-80k people each show and they make them happy. Very happy.

I guess people just wanna dream their little pipe dream and not be disturbed by facts too much. Could of course also be that I started it at the worst possible time, when an "Autoerotic Stones Album" thread stole all the attention. What do I know? smoking smiley

However, I think that a majority would have been much pleased to hear the band do, so to speak, a "concept concert" of playing STICKY FINGERS live, one of their most universally praised albums. With such an experience to their lasting memory, I gather that many could have taken it that some much played songs were not played on this occasion, even if some of these might be their own favourites. All the more if they had been prepared in advance of what was to expected. Both newborn and old hardliner fans could both have had a special treat to remember.

When I read about the setlist from Fonda Theatre (if that is the correct name), I hoped that the band would stick with that highly interesting idea. I find it a little sad that the Stones did not stick with that prospect.

Actually I quite like Jack Straw's proposed set. I'd just add We Love You as a second encore.

I notice that bv has included a link to this thread for "General complaints about the setlist" in the Nashville live show opening post.

Does that mean specific complaints about the setlist are still allowed there?
winking smiley

I do have a complaint about the general artistic laziness of the tour merch and most of the tour posters. Besides Charlotte's pretty cool alligator art I'm generally disappointed in the offerings so far. Perhaps I'm just getting sick of the now ubiquitous tongue on everything, but also the bland "The Rolling Stones" and "Zip Code Tour", at least they could use a more artistic font or something...

No worries, nobody is forcing me to buy the stuff.

peace

Okay, first I'll go with the ever present setlist complaint. These are not cheap shows. 19 songs is a slap in the face, and only 3 SF tracks on a tour supporting SF is pointless. Pearl Jam is one of my other favorite bands, and their shows have actually been getting longer with age. The last tour was averaging 35 songs per night. I understand they're 20 years younger, but they still charge about $70 a ticket. In Philadelphia in 2009, over 4 nights they played 103 different songs. Tickets for 4 nights was about equal to one stones ticket.

Again, I understand these men are in their 70's... But if you can play 19 songs, you can play 23 songs. It's an extra 15-20 mins on stage. This show in 2015 would absolutely have me buying a ticket and seeing a show (which im not this year):

1- Street Fighting Man
2- Tumbling Dice
3- Paint It Black
4- Monkey Man
5- Moonlight Mile
6- Dead Flowers
7- Bitch
8- Sister Morphine
9- Gimme Shelter
10- Saint Of Me
12- Ruby Tuesday
13- Shattered
14- Can't You Hear Me Knocking
----Band Intros----
15- Little T&A
16- Before They Make Me Run
17- Midnight Rambler
18- Honkey Tonk Women
19- Miss You
20- Jumpin Jack Flash
----Encore----
21- You Can't Always Get What You Want
22- Satisfaction
23- Brown Sugar

Enough warhorses for everyone to enjoy, deep cuts to keep us happy, and some semi-recent tracks to show these guys actually made music past the 1970's
To keep it fresh, have other songs that would be switched out on different nights to have a rotation going. Start Me Up (I know this is a warhorse that mick insists on playing every night, but this isn't even the same universe musically as JJF, BS, Satisfaction. GS).. Sweet Virginia, Like A Rolling Stone, Memory Motel, Flip The Switch, Love Is Strong, Get off My Cloud, LSTNT, Live With Me, Loving Cup... I know I left out Sympathy, and for good reason. It lost its luster years ago, and has become a parody of itself. It needs to go.

This is not too much to ask for the astronomical prices they are charging.

Lastly, am I the only one who absolutely despises the current stage? With the stones, we've always paid a premium, yet have always been treated to state of the art sets.. From steel wheels onward, the stage was as big a part of the show as the music. Each one had its own personality and theme (I personally loved the Bridges to Babylon stage the best), but this is just bargain basement basic festival stage that could be used for any band anywhere. It's not unique whatsoever to the stones, yet we still pay the premium...

I like this thread cool smiley

The hardest part is determining how much it is worth spending to see them. For me the cap is $100 to $125 tops. This show does not justify any more if you have seen them before. Even paying that makes me cringe. Once they start HTW around the 9 slot it feels like a race to the end. That is when any serious fans have to begin to lose interest. How long can you justify saying that the warhorses are for the people that have never seen them? Time to check out the setlist and shows for McCartney and U2 to see what they offer.

sicilian i know you have very intense thoughts about the warhorses, but every show i've been to, they are the songs the crowd responds to the most, and i believe that the performers and mick especially feed off the crowd energy. if the crowd started to lose the excitement of the warhorses i believe they would mix things up. i have to imagine they are bored out of their minds playing brown sugar for the 2000th time.

That is where I am misunderstood here. I am not calling for the purge of a handful of warhorses, but a mix-up and sprinkling in of a few more songs. What bores me is same running order from HTW to the end essentially. It is so predictable and redundant. 30 minutes into the show and the encore material starts to appear. Here is a short 22 song setlist with something for everybody and most importantly, a running order that looks like they really care about playing. Now compare this to what you get now. This show was a hell of lot cheaper and I suppose that many people were seeing them for the first time back in 1997 too.

The set list from Buffalo 1997:

1. Satisfaction
2. It's Only Rock'n Roll
3. Bitch
4. Let's Spend The Night Together
5. Gimme Shelter
6. Sister Morphine
7. Anybody Seen My Baby
8. 19th Nervous Breakdown
9. Out Of Control
10. Memory Motel
11. Miss You
-- Introductions --
12. All About You (Keith)
13. I Wanna Hold You (Keith)
14. Little Queenie (center stage)
15. Crazy Mama (center stage)
16. The Last Time (center stage)
17. Sympathy For The Devil
18. Tumbling Dice
19. Start Me Up
20. Honky Tonk Women
21. Jumping Jack Flash
22. Brown Sugar (encore)

It's not so much the warhorses, as that it's ridiculous there aren't more warhorses at the ready for the band to pick any five or six to end the show with.

Anything on Hot Rocks should be in the "after Midnight Rambler" sweepstakes, or really 3/4 of Grrr.

But so it goes, it's a little unrealistic to think they will switch things up on the final lap. I've long since made my peace with it, but it's still fun to snark on it occasionally.

I just listened to the new Live At Leeds release. Man, they had balls back then. They were doing songs from Sticky Fingers that hadn't even been released yet. Young men doing powerful music.

Yeah, I wish the Stones were more like the Grateful Dead. The Dead had a state of the art sound system, and recordings, by 1966. Hell, we still don't have a decent release of Paris '67, or any of Brian's last concerts. We don't even have the '68 NME show, Brian's last live appearance with the group. We don't even have the audio! Yeah, it's a pisser to know all that great technology and meticulous and plentiful live recording, wasted on the Dead, when it should have been lavished on the Stones.

There's no denying how much I love the Stones BUT I have decided not to go to any of these stadium shows for reasons that I've stated before ( chance of nasty weather, too many friggin people, too far away from the stage potentially etc) AND the main reason is the BORING set list for this tour. I can't help saying it! They stopped playing the songs I WOULD have made the effort to hear....and reduced the selections from Sticky Fingers to maybe 3 songs...and most nights, they DON'T play MOONLIGHT MILE! Why have they returned to the very OVER-PLAYED songs! I sure can skip HTW...I'll wait it out to see if by chance they add a few arena shows in the fall. Too bad really! I DID want a reason to go.

Not a huge fan of HTW....but....it has more history and is better known that Doom and Gloom......if there is any song that can be axed from the setlist.....it is Doom and Gloom......this isn't the GRRRR tour....that was two years ago!

I agree about Moonlight Mile, it should be a staple of this tour and they could easily insert 'Rip This Joint' that has the names of a number of cities they are visiting in the lyrics. Sadly, it is all about the money and not the fans. Heck, Ruby Tuesday is rarely played now-a-days, but it is very well known and could be in the set every night and the masses would know it.

Not holding my breath for a arena tour this fall as I believe South America will be this fall and then back to Europe next spring and summer with the last show in London.

You nailed my gripes. We were 11th row from the stage in a great section, and due to the way things ended up, I felt like we were looking at the back of peoples heads. Great view regardless, but even in paying top dollar and being 11th row, I did not feel 'close enough'. Sound was great though. Packed in like sardines.

The setlist is truly the problem. The issue for me is not just the predictability, but the song choices themselves. No Security had an AMAZING basic setlist. Because the setlist contained Respectable, Route 66, Moonlight Mile, etc, it was always an exciting show. The rarities were exactly that... icing on the cake. The current setlist is composed of the most over-played songs, no blues (aside from Rambler), and IORR as the line 'Chuck Berry'ish song.

Honestly, Nashville was fun, but I will 1. never pay full retail price for any Stones show, 2. not attend if the setlist is anything like this ever again. They screwed with us. Sticky Fingers mini-set? Nope. We are halfway through the current tour and they still haven't pulled out You Got The Blues, Sister Morphine, etc.

I feel like I will always listen to their music and enjoy countless bootlegs, but the fanaticism I once had has begun to dry up....

Licks had a better tour concept, better setlists, varying venues, excellent stadium stage, etc. The only thing I wish we had from this tour was the sound. If the Licks front of house mix was done like this tour, everyone would've thought that was the greatest tour FOR THE FANS. This tour is for the masses, and is one last cash grab. Pure n simple.

Mick talks a big game but because we love the music we all let it slide. As far as I can tell, he just wants the money. Thats it. They can't even allow a REAL fan vote. The Stones don't ask what you want to hear, they tell you what you want to hear, then ask you to 'vote'. What a crock.

They are still my favorite band of all time. It is just really hard to love them when they charge $600/seat in arenas and $350/seat in stadiums, to deliver nothing new.
