Not many here would remember, but Cheyenne with Clint Walker was popular.

Yep I remember that one.

Anyone remember "Branded" with Chuck Connors?

"What do you do when you're branded and you know you're a man?".

When they broke his sword!! man, that would piss me off!!

Yeah.. knocked his hat off.. ripped his lapels off.. and then torn off his buttons...

Then his sword (which snapped rather easily).

Around that time Conners was in a film, "Ride Beyond Vengance" that contained a nightmarish scene in which a gang of toughs held him down and literally branded him...

Great westerns:

Stagecoach
My Darling Clementine
Fort Apache
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon

The Ox-Bow Incident
The Westerner
Winchester 73
The Tall T

The Hired Hand

Cowboys vs Aliens ticked all my boxes, I couldn't wait to see it.

However, it turned out to be crap.

I rarely pan movies because, I dont know why... but good grief "Cowboys and Aliens" was a really really really bad movie. How they can fkup a movie starring James Bond, Indiana Jones, The Kurgan and Quorra is beyond me, but they sure did.

The Wild Bunch! Another long lost classic by Pekingpah. A very dark but rewarding film.

Long lost? It's probably Sam Peckinpah's most celebrated film...

Yes, true, but not too many young film goers know it. I love it! And the restored Director's cut is beautiful!

- western movies : not a big fan but I recently bought Once Upon A Time In The West in blu ray and it's brilliant, really worth it. The actors and also the music are excellent.

- tv series : no hesitation, I choose the Persuaders..it's a pity that they only played it for one season (70-71) !

I agree that The Persuaders is a fantastic TV series but it's not a western...

Here is a fantastic scene from One Eyed Jacks. Brando was electric! Rumors are there was close to an hour of unused footage from the only film he directed, and unfortunately it was all lost in a studio fire. The DVD isn't great quality, but it is worth getting.

Sorry, I got that wrong. I interpreted western as western society. You mean cowboy films I guess. Mea culpa.

I'm trying to remember the name of a great western in which two women - one a bar owner and the other a gang leader - fight it out over the course of the movie. Could be early 50s. Anyone know? In the end the bar gets burned down and they have a fight to the death at the end.

I loved that Twilight Zone episode that stonesnow posted - excellent.

ALL of my faves have been listed...I like almost anything with John Wayne.

Question: Is Fort Apache considered a Western or a war movie? That's definitely one of my very favorites.

Along with...

The Searchers
Magnificent Seven
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence
High Noon
True Grit (original)

For newer stuff - Unforgiven and The Missing.

OH and Thanks Max for the Deadwood post - now I have another new TV show to get me through the long cold Memphis winter. Hope you know that you are solely responsible for what has turned into a Netflix addiction - what can I say but THANK YOU - it's a great vice! smoking smiley

My pleasure mc... smileys with beer you are so much funthumbs up

btw- I was thinking about you when I saw The Stones added that Dec 8th NY show... are you going to stay for that one, right after Neil? (You lucky skillful duck) I wish I could meet you there, but it is not going to work this time.

Have fun with Deadwood... Ian McShane plays my favorite "Bad Guy" since Daniel Day-Lewis.... just beware after heavy doseages of Deadwood you may be cussing like sailor Calamity Jane for a while... then it wears off, kind of grinning smiley

btw- I just noticed that Deadwood still has a 9.0 rating on IMDB, that is almost unheard of there... even for some of the best movies/shows of all time... usually after while the ratings will drop just because people are... you know.

LOL - I don't mind the cussin'.
Would be so much fun to meet up in NYC but hey - I understand! I don't know if I can stay for the show. I really want to but it depends on the tickets - I'm not as savvy as some of the IORRians when it comes to scalpers - but I hope & pray I'll be able to go...dreams are free. smoking smiley

Another nice Western, Wayne's last one, The Shootest. A sad movie about the end of a gunfighter's career, with a young Ron Howard as an impressionable boy who idolized Wayne's character.

The Man Who Shot LIberty Vance is another classic Wayne pic and Marvin Lee is wonderfully vile.

Jimmy Stewart is the perfect everyman, and does a great job on The Broken Arrow. One of the rare early westerns that showed the Native American's in a sympathetic light. Stewart is phenomenal in it.

And The Naked Spur. A very somber and minimalistic western that uses the natural beauty of the Titans as a background. Great final shoot out! Janet Leigh is great in it. And beautiful!

I mentioned The Professionals earlier, and it is one of my favorites. Everyone it it is perfect. Great story, and some incredible action scenes. Lancaster and Marvin play off each other perfectly. And Jack Palance is fantastic and Jesus Razza! A story of honor, love, and passion.

One that wasn't mentioned, and I am surprised is Big Country! WHEW! This is one of those epic Western classics. With a young Charlton Heston and always fantastic Gregory Peck. Burl Ives won a best supporting actor Oscer, and he is stunning in it. A great story that has you hooked. And a young Chuck Conners pre Rifleman. The film is beautifully shot with a fantastic soundtrack.

A newer movie Ron Howard made called "Far and Away"

has a good scene of the Oklahoma land rush and the Oklahoma sooners... etc etc.... it starts out in Ireland and then goes to New York City (doesnt everybody/thing?) and then heads out "West" for the The Land Rush scene. I actually saw it at the theaters based on reading an interview with Opie.

A nice period piece, if you can put up with Tommy Cruise.

Last week I watched The Good The Bad & The Ugly on DVD,
I remembered it to be a terrific movie, but when seeing it again, after 15 years, it was somewhat stupid.....especially the 1st half. The scenes at the cementory in the closing, is fantastic though. The tale of human greed
Never seen a good western movie made after 1973 (Pat Garret & Billy the Kid), they just can't capture that outlaw feeling anymore. And Kirk Douglas isn't around anymore, either.
