The Searchers is the best western film, in my opinion. I like a few of the Kurt Douglas ones: Gunfight At The O.K. Corral is my favourite. As for western series', no idea. Mu father was a young child in the 50's and a teenager in the 60's. He enjoyed Wagon Train, Maverick, Bonanza, Rawhide, etc. Champion The Wonder Horse, Lone Ranger... All were shown on Saturday Morning Pictures here in the UK.

The Western genre has all but disappeared on tv and in the movies. For tv you can't beat Gunsmoke and Bonanza.

I forgot Shane - That is a great film. Also the gunfighter with Gregory Peck is really good. Max is correct good movies are good movies. They are not outdayed you have to look at some of them in the context of the times that they were made in. I find older movies in most instances are better than most of the fluff that comes out today. Today people are so hung up on effects and they sometimes take away from the human side of the movie. Shane has such a good story and some of the lines are a bit corny but that is what was done in the 1950's. Shane is absolutely beautifully shot in the Grand Tetons and the tension that builds in the movie between Shane and Wilson you can cut it with a knife. When Jack Palance (Wilson) rides out to the Starrett ranch for the first time and he and Shane are sizing each other up knowing at some point they will face off against each other is just brilliant movie making. You also hae Jack Palance playing one of the alltime villains and Alan Ladd playing one of the alltime good guy rolls and little Joey who idolizes him and at the end is Shane riding off to die or is it his character type that is dying symbolicly with the times? I've never been able to tell. Its an absolute all time classic film that will never be outdated. Great story, beautiful scenery, movies don't get much better than that. You can always tell whose father liked Shane there are a lot of Shane's out thereand I bet 95 percent of them were named after the movie unless you are farom Ireland.

Deadwood is one of the best shows ever but its more of a period piece than a western in the conventional sense. One of my favs for sure.
