I've never understood the point of "pre-ordering" an item about which there is no fear of a shortage.
I haven't read this whole thread but, on amazon at least, if you pre-order, you can lock down the price: if the price goes down, you get it at the lower price but if the price goes up, it stays at the price you pre-ordered. For example, I threw the new MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR deluxe edition in my cart when it was announced, for $66. The price is now $99, but I got it for the price it was set when I put it in my basket.
