I sure wish I could actually HEAR Keiths vocals. They are always so short and mixed so damn low! I love harmony vocals over almost any other musical form. Wouldn't it be great to hear a show of just Mick and Keith, both with acoustic guitars and microphones. I'll bet they could work up a show which would have standing ovations all over the world.

But back to the question:

Sitting on a Fence (thx Kirk)
Sweet Virginia (alt version with KR mixed UP loud)
Dead Flowers
Loving Cup

There is a minute long clip of Sweet Virginia somewhere on the Exile DVD which actually has Keiths vocal mixed higher that Micks. That opened my eyes and ears a bit.
Noteable for this thread: Keiths solo performance of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" turns me to jelly every time. peace.

I don't really do favorites either but Sweet Virginia. Its so raw and it almost sounds like he's singing lead.

I too love the art of harmony vocals and back-up vocals (I believe there is a difference in the way they are approached). The Beatles were great but what I love about the early Stones is Keith is just just off key enough to make interesting and just a bit higher to let you know that there is another singer. I have read stories that Keith had "Perfect pitch" as a youth and was in a boys choir taht preformed for the Queen.

Back to the question, I can't believe that no one has mentioned Ruby Tuesday and my favorit, Mixed Emotions.

I have to say, when I was playing in bands, I stole a whole lot from Keith's slightly off key, slightly delayed harmony style and I also love what Sambora does with Bon Jovi and Little Steven does with the Boss as well.

Nice Timmy, we are kindred souls in that respect. Another great pair in that vein is what Jay Bennett used to sing with Jeff Tweedy during Wilco's most potent years. The AM record , Casino Queen, and the Being There record really got that close , dirty, damn interesting harmony thing going on. Sometimes just above or sometimes a third below. It just hints at the THIRD harmony part (usually fourth or fifth) and makes ME belt it out while listening ocasionally. lol

It's the subtleness of it that makes it so much more interesting than traditional country harmonies. I call it the soul harmony. Hope you are still singing brother! Be well. peace

Naturalust, kindred souls indeed, absolutely love "what the other singer is doing", grew up on it...all those great bands were so much more than just a single lead singer, wouldn't you agree? and not to mention CS&N (and sometimes Y) and the Eagles....but then that is a whole different story isn't it?

Sometimes when we are listing to songs and singing along in the car or whatnot my boys would question what I was trying to sing because I would start up at the end of a phrase or bump it just a bit and I had to sit them down and point out certain band that did things like that...not just one guy (or gal) out front of screaming guitars. Don't get me wrong I love music and LOUD doesn't bother me either but I believe that ture harmony/back up vocals went by the wayside with real rhythm guitarist...oh crap, that's a whole different story too!

Anyway, nice to hear from you, there seems to be some great people on IORR, Tim

Not probably the best but alraedy "Tell Me" showed the charming character of Keith's voice, and how beautifully it matched with Mick's. Those little "ooh yeaahhss"...

Welcome aboard Timmy, it's a great forum. The only one I've ever found worth posting on. Good mix of Europeans and Americans and a sweet simple format. Mostly like minded individuals. Hey and the "whole different story" might be lost on your boys (and mine) but it's kinda the bread and butter around here. peace

Very difficult to pick just one...pretty much love all of Keith's backing vocals, they really always did mesh very nicely with Mick's voice. Going waaaay back through the Rolling Stones time machine, there is one that sometimes sticks out called "If You Need Me" from 1964.... "Dead Flowers" is a favorite too... But too many to choose from, I mean hundreds!

"If You Need Me" from 1964 ...

july 17th 1964 - the Joe Loss Show. yeah that is a wonderful rendition -
i wanted to mention it, but the original poster wanted studio tracks
and that was one of those "live for the radio" scenarios.
well, it was a radio studio, wasn't it, so ... yeah that one!

he backed himself up on All About You as well
and the unforgettable You Got It Made :E

and yeah, his work on Ronnie's albums: that thing he does of just touching the lines with his voice
like no other, baby - like no other can

No way, I am certain that Keith sings the backing vocals in Brown Sugar (but I do know that many of the later backing vocals that sound like Keith are actually Mick - Chris Kimsey said in an interview that Mick does a better "Keith vocal" than Keith!

One of the hi Mick BU vocals that'should' be Keith is on "100 Years Ago" in the slow break on "ain't got no time to waste", and on all the "don't you think" throughout the song.

My favorite Keith backing vocals were on many of the Some Girls tracks ... until I found out that Mick did most of the background vocals on that album.

Sorry, I totally forgot the poster did say studio tracks! So I guress "If You Need Me" disqualifies.... Then sticking with "Dead Flowers" , but there are too many choices. Often wished his voice was used more, especially way back in the days when his voice was really smooth and ...can I say almost "sweet"...

The liner notes are quite clear there.

I also thought that some of the back up-vocals on the title track were done by Keith, but it was indeed Mick.

Keith BVs a massive part of the classic stones sound..their absence just one more reason they should knock it on the head.

Unfortunately we cant blame MJ this time..just imagine what 8.5 million cigarettes and a coupla tons of Cocaine are gonna do to your vocal chords.

Funny you say that PR2000, I thought the same damn thing!. It is the kind of song where Keith and Mick's voice would blend to do the song justice. Gotta have something special since Billy P.'s killer keyboards are gone forever. peace

I was listening to my copy of Have You Seen Your Mother LIVE (also known as Got Live If You Want It), and I find keith's BV brilliant on 19th Nervous Breakdown. Almost Beatles-quality thumbs up

I was listening to 'Hand of Fate' yesterday, and realized he does some great singing there too.
