New unreleased Exile era instrumental
Posted by: thijs1981 ()
Date: August 24, 2011 16:15

Found this haunting instrumental on a new YouTube-channel dedicated to Nicky. Unfortunately it has almost every video mislabeled.

Never heard this one before though, but no means do I have a complete collection. Anyone with more info?

It is Sticky / Exile era Stones for sure.

Shame almost everything runs so fast... the Rocks Off instrumental I don't think I've heard before too?

Funny indeed, this I'm Not Signifying has the brass parts already and less vocals than the other outtakes.

SV is still without backing vocals.
Maybe these were quick mixes for everybody to take home and see what they could come up with?

Shit, EMI is on it. Can anyone download these ones ASAP?

Don't know, all tracks have elaborate piano, so it's after Nicky's done his thing.

Great to hear the initial idea of the middle 8 section of Rocks Off, without the tremlo'd guitars!

Different guitar leads (though pretty similar!) on this version of Shine A Light...

Thanks a lot for finding this, this is probably the post of the year as far as outtakes are concerned... A true goldmine!

The YouTube description states:

Quote

This site features songs from Nicky Hopkins Mr. Session Man, A Complete Anthology: The Classic Sessions And Solo Work 1961-1994. This Anthology is a 350 song private collection. The 1961- 1980 material was provided by Nicky Hopkins and is from his personal archives, The 19881-1994 material was provided by Nicky's many friends and associates over many years.

So the Stones material comes directly from Nicky.

The new instrumental reminds me somewhat of the bridge in Till The Next Time.
It is very melodic. Funny they throw the major 7th in there as well. They didn't do that on many songs, that is pushing experimental, chord wise for early 70s Stones.

Seems they just didn't have enough room for all these ballads, like Following The River, Separately. Could have been a Taylor idea as well, maybe that's why they didn't finish it. We'll just have to guess.

I'm pretty happy I don't have to listen to this one with faux-young-over-the-top Jagger vocals on it, though.

I think the uploader got some of Nicky's stuff, but has no clue on many of the songs. For instance: Autumn Almanac is labeled as Nicky with The Who etc. And we get a Tumbling Dice that's labeled as Rip This Joint.

The complete anthology = the YouTube channel, I think. Maybe we should help the uploader out a bit?

Before anyone gets too excited: all the Brian Jones vocal videos are known outtakes, with Jagger vocals.

Well, the instrumental is very, very simular to how they did Wild Horses in '75! Chords, licks, except for the major 7th they threw in.

Yeah, I notice the guy has Ruby Tuesday on that channel. An assumption? An error?

Or, with this in mind...

A revelation that Nicky plays piano on it!? eye popping smiley

It's just very Stonesy, maybe they lacked a good melody?

I'm always wondering whether they had the melody for later reworked songs as Tops back when they started recording them, or if Jagger made them up in that Paris warehouse with Chris Kimsey.

But then again you can't just throw some nice chords together, can you. They must have had some melody that they thought went well with the music.

Oh well.

He also has Have You Seen Your Mother on there, and more outrageously: You Never Give Me Your Money. I'm going to drop the uploader a mail.

I have started downloading some of the stuff. While My Guitar Gently Weeps sounds a bit different than the released version, but I'm listening on the PC so another advice would be great.

Maybe some of these tracks were on a tape from Nicky, but that in itslf was not meant as a claim that he played on them!?

Much oddness!

I think John Shine, or someone related to him, could be the uploader. Some of his songs are on there. He has recorded a song with Nicky:

The Street Fighting Man has vocals I've never heard I think and probably a different mix too, although it's difficult to tell on this laptop.
