People who don't like Hold Back, simply haven't understood it, just like there is lots of music I can't appreciate because I don't understand what it gives (perhaps that's a general rule - if you don't like a song that someone else likes, that other person simply has understood it, you haven't).

I've always loved the song, considered it to be one of their best since the 70s. And I especially love Mick's vocals! The point is the desperation, the frenetic restlessness, the fxxx attitude of it all!

(People complain about Charlie's drums. I think Bill Wyman has said that The Stones themselves didn't care much for the song, but included it on DW because Charlie found a new way to do the drums. Thanks, Charlie!)

Anyway, here's the beauty:

One of my favs from DIRTY WORK. Jagger's most aggressive vocals.

Indeed - that would call for a lifetime banning from listening to the Stones!

This track doesn't even deserve B-side status it's so bad - except from 3:00 onward - the ending is good. The ending is the best produced part of the song.

The entire thing is not good, I don't even like the ending. It's hard to listen to this one...

Well hell I guess that means I'm a little more tolerant than you? LOL! I never said I listen to it, but I did to hear if there was anything good at all about it, which I remembered somehow, which I think is the outro. But it's not something I will listen to in any kind of normal way.

I listened to it on YouTube and retained nothing. Literally five minutes after listening to it all that I could remember about it was Mick's rough barking for singing. I can't remember a single tangible thing about the song.

What were they on when they thought that was a track to put on an album?

That record really is in the Phantom Zone for me personally. It just doesn't exist for me.

There is a lot of things wrong with "Winning Ugly": the production mainly, the slicky sound of the bass, the arrangements, etc... but it is actually a song, with a good melody, chords, structure, bridge and even groove and as such it has the potential to be a good song, if played differently and produced differently. Maybe someday, a band will stand up and take up the challenge and do a kick-ass version of it.
"Hold Back" on the other hand is not a song. It's just a bloody, screaming mess. Its only redeeming aspect is that it's slighly less terrible than "Back To Zero".

Yeah, same for me. Even the okay One Hit doesn't do much for me, though at least I can listen to it. I do love the much hated Too Rude though, but can see why others don't like it I guess.

There's no question it was a "going through the motions" release. Not a bad ratio though -- 1 dud in their catalog!

Hear the voice of experience, a word from the wise
Grab opportunities while you're alive

Cause if you follow the crowd
Cause if you act like a coward
You'll end up yelling out loud

Hold back, you'll regret it some day
Choke on that, don't let it pass you by
Hold back, you better seize the hour

In some ways a punk cousin of One More Try ....

Oh, a track from Dirty Work! I had it in my mind that it was, but with all the ‘new album’ talk, indie think that, perhaps, this thread was in reference to a new recording! Silly me.
