He was good, but I really don't think he is up there with the giants like Hendrix etc, his playing is just too bog standard - british blues to be deemed distinctive.

I do prefer the UK - no single formula too, but it doesn't always make for better albums, Aftermath ending on such a weak song like What to Do for example. I refuse to believe the band chose that one! The first UK album is perfect though, the thought of listening to that minus Mona and with the inclusion of not fade away freaks me out!

Quotestone-relics Another Thing, NOW! is not the way the Stones intended that record to be. It was manufactured from multiple Lps and singles. I much prefer the original UK LP releases, as thats the way they were intended to be heard. Granted, you had to buy the singles, in order to get all the songs, but thats ok, as I always bought the singles, too. I always liked that fact, that in the UK,

Quotetoomuchforme the HISMAJESTY pics are selfexplaining : Keith drinking and ass on a soft cushion when Ry is at work ass on a stool. I really think that Keith photo is so loaded, as soon as I saw it and knowing the context it was taken in, well I dunno, the comment I put in the bubble seemed so natural, obvious and probably close to what he was thinking.

Twas a blessed(or should that be cursed?) union from the start... Hallelujah!!! Even their earliest recordings have something that the other crop of British R 'n' B groups don't have, lots of other bands used top session players on their recordings and they still disappeared, but the stones had the magic!

Quotescottkeef Is Brian in open tuning on that pic? There is a thread about whether or not Brian and Keith played JJF using open E that day. That pic and a few others seem to suggest they were tuned to open E, but it's just too hard to say from just a picture, if they were it would mean they played Satisfaction using the same tuning(it's that unusual for them to re-arrange stuff),

QuoteSleepy City Though the 1967 European tour wasn't shown on UK TV... Did any of the autumn 66 UK tour make it on to British tv? It's frustrating how little there is of that tour available to peruse and listen to!

Any chance of someone re-uploading it? Also, is the milan 67 boot jumpy? I downloaded it last night, but there's little jumps every now and then, perhaps a problem during the download?

The guitars were on overdrive for the 67 tour before, same amps as the 68 NME slot too.

It's frustrating listening to Brian play acoustic on the early takes of The Lantern, his tuning is off even after tuning up and what he plays is close too being something cool, but he keeps throwing in wonky licks for an end phrase. If you haven't already, you need to download and listen to the box sets neptune!

QuoteKSIE This is from memory, but I believe Brian played oboe on Baby You're a Rich Man. There isn't any oboe on the track though, the weird reedy sound is a small monophonic electronic keyboard called a clavioline which was played by John Lennon.

Quoteneptune Do you think Brian is playing acoustic on the released version of Lantern? It kind of sounds like his playing on Goddard's One Plus One footage of the acoustic take of SFTD (where Mick is teaching Brian the part but then leaves him alone once he's got it down and begins adding some nice bluesy runs during verse) Also, on 2000 Man, is that Brian on sitar-sounding electric

Yeah I agree that even when session players have been brought in, it doesn't mean Brian can't be on that track playing sax also. For example, Bill say's Brian played sax on something happened..., so perhaps Brian played a cool sax part, then later the sessions players added on their overdubs or vice versa. There has to be a reason why Bill mentions he's playing sax on the

I've searched and searched for bootlegs containing any trace of Brian on sax on rich man, nothing out there that I'm aware of. Mick and Keith were in abbey road during the live broadcast of AYNIL, but they weren't present during the backing track recording sessions. I don't really count that as being part of the song as such, it's not like they're mic'd up o

As an incentive for someone to post the audio of the poll winners performance, why don&

Quoteneptune Yes, I agree with this 100%. I thought you might! According to Glyn Johns Brian played sax on Baby You're A Rich Man(Perhaps he's getting his Beatles songs mixed up?). I've never read that in any quotes/interviews by The Beatles saying he did, but if he did they must not have deemed it good enough as there is no sax on the final released version. Quoteneptu

Cooder plays on the spring 69 Sweet Lyle Lucie aka Downtown Suzie which was recordeed on the same night as the Jamming With Edward 'album' was recorded. Brian had used open G years before so it's not the first stones recording to feature it. The Performance soundtrack version of Memo from Turner is fantastic, one of my favourite 'stones' tracks, even though it only

There's no mics on the drums(there would atleast have to be one mic!?), Charlie is picking up his sticks when the musics already started on 'down the road' and also, you hear an acoustic in the last time, but there's no one playing an acoustic. HW is definitely live, note that there are mics on the drums.

Well, there is the JJF studio version that only has the backing vocals, completely separating the lead vocals from the promo video versions would be hard though.
