Now your dancing child with his Chinese suit he Spoke to me, I took his flute No, I wasn't very cute to him, was I? But I did it, because he lied and Because he took you for a ride And because time was on his side and Because I...... I always thought that Dylan had to be singing about Brian.

Mick gave an extremely solid performance. I too, would have rather have heard him sing a slow soul tune. But, has anyone commented on his sparring with the guitar player? They seemed to fight for awhile, and then the sideman retreated. Isn't that Mick sending a message to Keith? Something like, "Don't even think of getting into the ring with me, you can't win," Mick is p

boogie1969- It's hard to imagine that on a Stones site I found somebody who thinks that Mick Jagger doesn't measure up to Al Jolson as a performer. You might be right, and I might even reluctantly agree with you. However, I am surprised and would like to hear your thinking.

I love that Wilson saw himself as a link in the chain of great singing showmen that reached back to at least the 1920's. He even put out a record in tribute to one of his major influences, Al Jolson. That chain went on to include Presley, as well as Mick himself.

I Think it's Mick on piano, at the top of the tune. Then Nicky comes in, but what do I know? I still think it's weird that those old lyrics predict that Jagger would revisit this material.

My daughter is going away to college and every penny is precious. Today, she asked to borrow the new Exile so she could download it. I told her no. Then, I reached into my wallet and pulled out enough money for her to buy her own copy. She understood right away. I want exile to be the number one record in America. I truly think I'm losing my mind.

I love how the sentiment of "Soul Survivor" (...gonna be the death of me..)is followed up here with "Got to be alive and kicking". I also think Jagger's, "I think I've been here before" on "Signifying" refers to the whole process of what he was doing with these old tracks.

The Stones are master burlesque dancers. They are not going to show you everything you want to see, until you can't stand the anticipation for another second. They have done it to us again. I'm looking around the house for an old Target gift card. If I can't find one, I'll empty out my change bottle. I probably would plunder my kid's lunch money if it came to that. Bu

I think they are going to lose their shirts on this. However, very few promoters have ever lost money on this band, so what do I know or care*. That said, looking at all that crap made me cringe, and feel sad. On the other hand, I listened to the new single today as loud as I could blast it, and it got me in its sway. *The weird thing is, I do care. I want them to show a certain integrity

Hey, I’d like to get into this. What ultimately defines The Stones, is that they make music that hits your body hard, but also gives your brain ideas to think about. James Brown created rhythms so complex and infectious, that you don’t care that sometimes, the beat is the whole of his message. Dylan has so much philosophy going on, that it doesn’t bother you when his music goes clunky. But Th

I see the song as one half of a rumination on gambling as a metaphor for life. "Casino Boogie" warns us that love and justice are all part of a crooked system, that we can't beat. But, we are all thrill freaks, willing to throw good money after bad. The Dietrich movie is probably "Rancho Notirious", a film that revolves around the phrase "Chuck-a-luck". It

How about an article devoted to what fans, musicians, and music business types think the Stones should do next. For better or for worse, The Stones have never cleared the slate the way Dylan has. Nobody expects him to match the quality of his best work. The same can't be said for our heroes. So, what should their next move be?

Early in my son's educational career, the teacher asked Ethan's class for names, other than their own, that they liked. My son raised his hand and said, "Lucifer!" I don't need to tell where he got that name from. I also don't need to write about the strange looks the teacher gave me from that day on. Yes, both our kids love The Stones. And, after looking at that f

My love of music comes directly from the old man. His collection of 78's included Billie Holiday, Woody Guthrie, and Cecil Grant. I heard the Will Bradley Trio's "Down the Road a Piece", from his stash, before I even knew the Stones had cut it. One day he walked past me in the living room, where I was listening to the Stones and said, "I'll tell you what makes th

In my experience, the difference between a good working player, and a great musician, is that the musician is almost incapable of truly copying another person's licks note for note. What fascinates me about Keith is where he differs from Berry, not where he tries to shadow him. Older players have told me that it was considered bad form to cop somebody's licks too closely. It was actual

The other jazz player I sometimes think of in connection with Keef The Riffer, is Count Basie. In his younger days, Basie played a lot. His piano style, particularly his left hand, set the groove and and dominated the music. As he got older, Basie played less and less, still setting the tone of his band, but contributing as much with his presence, his history, and the the occasional, but vital

What comes across is his intelligence, which frankly is the last thing I expected. I always guessed that Jackson might have another speaking voice than that high pitched, singsongy thing he used so often in public. He did have another one-lower in pitch, commanding, respectful. He comes across as the least weird performer you've ever seen. He interacts with musicians, choreographers, and

I'm not sure why, but the wife and I both wanted to see the Michael Jackson film, "This Is It". Much to my amazement, I loved every minute of it. When Michael was riding up and down in that cherry picker, I couldn't help but think about Jagger, who had the same idea so many years before. In fact, a lot of it reminded me of the Stones. The two big differences being, that Jac

One of the last sentences Lester Bangs published in April of 1982 was, "In the future, rock stars will run in packs." At the time I couldn't make any sense of it. Now, it seems like a very accurate prophesy. On another note, I can't tell you how happy that video of Jagger made me. It's hard to believe he (they) still have such a hold on me.

The weird thing about "All In The Game", is that its melody dates back to 1911. It wasn't a soul tune at all. In fact, it was composed by a man who later became Calvin Coolidge's vice president. Now you know the rest of the story.

I always thought that the version of "Leavin' Trunk", that Taj cut on his first record, was an inspiration for "Memo From Turner". In fact, I think I heard that Mick was actually dancing to the Taj song when they filmed some of that scene. Of course, I have no idea where I heard that, or if it's true. I will say that Taj's original band with Jesse Ed Davis was

I'm not sure why, but I've always loved the bridge of "Pain Of Love". Maybe it's because it doesn't sound forced into the song. A good bridge should be like a quick vacation from the main composition. Some of the things people are calling bridges, I would call choruses. Is there a Chuck Berry song with a bridge? The best bridges were written by people like Irving Ber
