There were actually two tours in these years. The Darkness on the Edge of Town tour was 1977-78. The River tour was 1980-81.

Point taken, with sssoul. Just listened to the 75 version and it's more like the 69 version than the studio version. My collection from the 78 & 81 tours doesn't have any SFTD. Starting with the SW tour, the song starts w/ the faux bongo and piano riffs, which is more like the version on Beggars. For what it's worth, my fave of all of these is the YaYas version.

Subsequent live versions are more similar to the studio version. I was just pointing out that they rearranged it so soon after it's release,

Thank you Thommie and with sssoul. Actually I was referring to the second solo - I should have been more specific. Isn't it weird that they rearranged this song for the 69 tour (so soon after it was released) and then reverted back to the studio version for subsequent tours?

I was listening to GYYYO today. Who plays the lead on SFTD? I know that there are overdubs, but this is smoking!

I concur. Check out the 1975 London gig included with the Born to Run anniversary box set and then realize that sandwiched between that show and the ones you mentioned was the 1978 tour, the 1980-81 tour, the 1984-85 mega tour and the 1987-88 tour. That's a lot of good rockin'.

Agree. They rocked. The drummer was DJ Fontana (not DC).

Impossible to say for sure, but we can do our part by exposing our kids (and grandkids, if it applies) to Stones music.

I would have to say Thunder Road. It's like a 4 minute feature film. Still hear new things in that song.

Seems like there's a lot of "Best of" going on recently. I thought I'd start a thread. Although it might be blasphemy not to pick Satisfaction, I have to go with Brown Sugar. That riff always makes me want to dance on the ceiling. Your picks?

OpenG, I'm not nearly as accomplished as you appear to be, but my favorite Stones ballad to play is also Wild Horses - even if it's just strumming chords. I also like playing Dead Flowers, though I suppose it's not a ballad.
