Nah, the stuff from before the Island albums is much better, when it was "the Wailers," not "Bob Marley and the Wailers." Look for compilations of the coxsone dodd, leslie kong, and especially lee perry productions. Catch a Fire on is ok, IMO, but lacking any magic.

"Mr. Brown" with the crazy "Scratch" Perry production is a favorite.

But let's not shortchange the Island stuff: "Concrete Jungle," "Slave Driver," "No Woman (live)," "Lively Up Yourself" and so on...

Simmer Down .... A massive massive hit in Jamaica....The Wailers plea to the Rude Boys for peace in the ghettos.

Bob Marley is simply one of the best songwriters this world has ever seen. This guys wrote so many classics it's hard to choose. The following I think are among his best:

aobscure tracks; I´d say some of the most 'mixed up-ones'
(non-purist reggae that is) are my fav´s Could You Be Loved
and Is It Love? Plus I like Exodus & Comin In From The Cold.
Generally I like the early stuff better.

Erm, no, that is by Gregory Isaacs, The Cool Ruler, whose work I also heartily reecommend you dive into ears first. Be careful though because Isaacs was a one-timne crack addict who made about a hundred crap albums for different kabels to fuel his habit.
