I remember how radio was put off by the single when it first came out. They didn't know what to make of it...I don't know about "brilliant", but the record has aged pretty well, maybe excepting Indian Girl and Where The Boys Go.

I've got Ya-Yas on now...Pure joy. Taylor's guitar from the vamp of Under My Thumb into I'm Free is priceless. Satisfaction is great. The footage of the Stones meetimg the Dead (with Charlie refusing to kiss the girl) is like two worlds colliding. My only complaint: Why couldn't they combine the MSG footage from this and Gimme Shelter onto one DVD of ALL the MSG tunes: JJF, SF

Ry has held a grudge all these years. From what I know, he is not the easiest guy to deal with. Maybe he wasn't treated well - after all the Stones have been known to play mind games with people - but that doesn't mean he was "ripped off" musically. Keith's failure to turn up many times when Ry was at the session is what I was hoping to find out about. Perhaps they didn&#

Elvis and The Attractions had Aftermath on heavy rotation for their first US Tour, which influenced the sound and songwriting of EC's 2nd album, This Year's Model...Just listen to This Year's Girl - very Aftermath-y.

Ry's Chavez Ravine is a great album, as was his Paris texas movie soundtrack. What was really indulgent was to play slide guitar all over this traditional Cuban music in the Buena Vista Social Club movie, and to have the poor judgment to put his untalented son in the band with all these legendary Cuban musicians as "percussionist".

<<The last picture is a early 60's Gibson Melody Maker with added humbucker. The cheapest of all Gibsons.>> I have that exact model Melody Maker! It's a great guitar, especially when you replace those single-coils with special P90's that are made to go under the stock Gibson pick up covers. Now I feel even better about this guitar. A steal when I bought it several ye

Exactly, Mathijs...The point many people miss when they accuse Keith of "ripping off" Cooder is that Ry could never have written those songs. Also, Ry - as well as keith - owe a great debt to the blues masters they studied, so the both borrowed heavily to create their own styles...If great songs were a function of riffs or technically good guitar playing there would be a hundred bands a

I remember how disillusioned I was when I read Spanish Tony's "book" when I was a teeenager. I was very naive. The again, if someone took every stupid thing I ever did and put it in a book out of context. it wouldn't look a lot better...

I think the murky mix of Exile is one of its charms. I was still discovering guitar parts 20 years later. Not sure if a "cleaner" mix would improve it!

As a songwriter, I can say that coming up with riffs in songs is not the same as "writing" a song - which is words, melody and chord progressions. Bill Wyman, who "wrote" JJF, might disagree though.

I remember reading it at the time in one of those magazines - Cream or Trouser Press. They specifically mentioned Drift Away and said one side would be live. Amazing the bits of arcana one retains in the brain for 35 years...

As we all know, there was some bad blood between Ry Cooder and Keith, Cooder refusing to speak about his time with the Stones, accusations that they somehow stole his sound, etc. Does anyone have the full story on this? Also, is Jamming With Edward on CD?

Great pieces here...what might have been had they gone with Wayne. But the idea of it being an English band is key to the Stones - whatever their debt to American music. This is one case where the social factors won out over the musical ones, in my view. Sad that they (inadvertently or not) led Wayne to believe he had the gig...Every time I hear Hand of Fate or Worried About You I have to remind

Anyone know which guitars/amps were used for the Nellcote sessions for Exile, particularly songs like Rocks Off? There's a bit of rehearsal footage of Shake Your Hips and Tumbling Dice, but not sure if that was done before or after those sessions. What guitar did MJ use on Stop Breaking Down? How about Taylor's guitars?

I thought mix said the Exile mixes weren't very good, not that they were the wrong mixes...when they first went to mix Exile for CD they couldn't understand why the master tape sounded so bad, then they discovered a different tape with the eq notations on the box, which was the right one.

I've always been a little fuzzy on just when Keith got off smack. He seemed at his worst in '76-'77, and he was much more energetic on the '78 tour, so I had assumed he kicked around then, but I read recently that it was not until the mid-late 80s? I also read that he said he had relapsed during the Voodoo Lounge tour. Can anyone here enlighten me? And sorry if this has been c

You could almost read between the lines in Ronnie's book and see "non-disclosure contract" and "fully vetted by lawyers". It was oddly lacking in behind-the-scenes band details. It was like he is always the junior partner, being careful not to anger his big brothers...My take on it anyway...

I have been friendly with Michael Lindsay-Hogg for a number of years. I am always pumping him for Beatles and Stones stories, and he usually is kind enough to oblige...I was in the audience for the invitation only premier of Rock & Roll Circus with Keith and Yoko a few rows behind me in the theater. Keith let out an audible chuckle when he appeared on the screen in his eye patch and hat get-u
