"The musicians who weren't playing were watching Hendrix, transfixed, from behind the curtains at the side of the stage, says Grace Slick, who performed at Monterey Pop with Jefferson Airplane. "We hadn't seen a lot of these people. And everybody was just blown away by Jimi Hendrix in particular, because we hadn't seen him live. But we were amazed at each other."

The Travelling Wilburys were formed by a group of seasoned musicians who got together out of mutual respect to hang out and write a few songs. They succeeded by leaving their egos at the door and produced some nice tunes which were generally well received. There are some other seasoned musicians still around who probably thought that they should have been invited to become a Wilbury but were n

It's awful when your heroes pass on and I'm as sad today as I was when Elvis and Jimi went. As many have said, no Chuck Berry - no Rolling Stones, they owe him so much. There are very few people who can claim to have changed the course of rock 'n' roll. I'm thinking of Elvis, Bo Diddley, Jimi, Lennon and of course Chuck Berry. They are all gone now and I'm str

Why should I lower my expectations? It's precisely because nearly everyone else here does just that means the band can get away with releasing this stuff. They've been playing the blues for over 50 years yet have lost the feel with this album. I know a dozen UK pub bands who could play blues better than this, including most of the tribute bands. If all you want is to praise everythin

This was trailed as a blues album, recorded spontaneously or whatever and finished in a few days (comparatively). To me it sounds sterile, Jagger over performs the vocals and there's too much harp. To any new fans looking in: if you want to hear the Stones play the blues all you need is the Chess Sessions and Bright Lights Big City. The No 2 album and 5x5 EP are atmospheric and show th

I have a recollection of seeing Screaming Lord Sutch (and the Savages, no doubt) on something similar to this in UK in the late 1960s. I remember thinking it was like a video jukebox, was expensive to use and there were no acts I wanted to see. As a Stones fan then and now I would have no doubt remembered if the band were available on this machine. This doesn't mean to say they didn't a

I was really sorry to hear this. I was a big fan of the Man band in the 70s. I remember once going to see them at Wolverhampton Civic Hall and took my album sleeves with me. I was hanging around on the balcony before the gig hoping to find someone to sneak me backstage and I became aware of someone standing beside me - it was Terry Williams. He signed my sleeves and invited me backstage to me

I'm 66 now and remember hearing I Wanna Be Your Man and loving the tougher sound compared to the Beatles singalong. However it was Not Fade Away that got me hooked and I've loved the Diddley beat ever since. Also still love the Chicago recordings, 5x5 EP, early bootlegs so really looking forward to hearing new album in December

QuoteSwayed1967 Eminently listenable but so too is Down The Road Apiece, Route 66, Around and Around etc. and when I listen to those songs one after the other I'm slightly underwhelmed. Yeah it's great stuff, historically very important and all, but not nearly as stunning as the original tunes that would come a few years later. That's said with the benefit of hindsight. When thes

From the very beginning to when MT left is a lot of years but I love everything from these times. My first purchase was Not Fade Away, my last Steel Wheels. Got everything I need. I'm not sure how much exhibitionism holds for me?

QuoteCaptainCorella 35 years. Makes me feel very old, and very sad indeed. A terrible thing to have happened. But... I did actually exchange a small number of words with John, and for that I'm disproportionately grateful. In the summer of 1971 I worked in London, very close to the US Embassy, and very near Oxford St. John & Yoko had just brought out the paperback version

Overdubs or not, we can only judge what is presented to us. I was at the Leeds gig, as I have posted before, so the recording should hold some affection for me. It's good but has it's faults as others here have mentioned. For me, GYYO is a fantastic album and stands any amount of listening. Yes, it's overdubbed here and there but, like a woman with a little discreet makeup, it'

113. Fade Outs
A great early Stones track is 2120 South Michigan Avenue, which appears to be available in two studio versions. The first is the commercial issue on the 5x5 EP, which fades out, and the second is the same track which continues beyond the earlier fade with a couple of minutes of jamming before it also fades out. Obviously, the full track was kept and eventually made available in the longer version

Eddie Izzard is playing some Uk dates next year. But not a tour, it's a whole month in London only. What's wrong with other major cities so fans don't have to travel so far? I don't live in Scotland but if I did I might have to take two days off work in order to see the gig, one day to travel there and one day back. Plus a hotel overnight. And food, drink, etc. And I might wan

Quoteohotos Quotetomcasagranda I liked their unissued duet album with Chris Rea. I wasn't aware of this. Always considered Rea as another great player comparable to Knopfler. He's taking the pee. It's an old gag - the band would have been known as Dire Rea, geddit? How we laughed..... Early stuff was better, Once Upon A Time in the West is a favourite. Drummer at time of Bro

I was at the concert. The Groundhogs were indeed on the bill as were an Afro-rock band called Noir. Tickets were 19/6d in old UK money, just under £1. For comparison, my salary was probably about £10 per week at the time. Good times!
