The Travelling Wilburys were formed by a group of seasoned musicians who got together out of mutual respect to hang out and write a few songs. They succeeded by leaving their egos at the door and produced some nice tunes which were generally well received.
There are some other seasoned musicians still around who probably thought that they should have been invited to become a Wilbury but were not, for obvious reasons.
I propose a new 'supergroup' where these musicians can be kept in one place and under supervision, to be known as the Snivelling Raspberries. These are the guys who haven't had anything new to offer for years but who still put out product and tour charging extortionate prices based on their reputations alone.
Suggestions:
Paul McCartney (bass) - loveable moptop, only good now for a couple of Beatle encores to send the small crowd home happy
Elton John (piano) - ageing queen, a legend in his own mind, career extended by appearance at celebrity funeral service. Totally reliant on Candle in the Wind, etc for any audience reaction
Ringo Starr (drums) - rightly remembered as an innovative drummer in the Fabs, was only allowed the novelty songs to sing (Yellow Sub, etc) and who wants to hear those any more? Would still shake his fringe about if he had one.
You get the idea? I am looking for a lead vocalist and some guitarists (Francis Rossi presently auditioning). Any ideas?
Hate to say it, but ... Keith Richards, who comes out after intermission, runs his hands through his hair and says, 'It's good to be here, it's good to be anywhere,'' followed by Cheryl Crowe and five acoustic guitarists suddenly appearing and they all launch into Wild Horses.
Cheryl Crowe? Is this Sheryl Crow's evil twin sister a/k/a Skippina? Re other names, why no Eagles (or any of the remaining members)? I think we could add a Moody Blue or two to this group along with Peter Noone; John Fogerty; Aretha Franklin; Bob Dylan; Flo and Eddie (a/k/a The Turtles); Three Dog Night; Wynonna; and onward. What a helluva festival it would make.
