always brightens my day when I see a William S. Burroughs quote: "Women may well be a biological mistake; I said so in 'The Job.' But so is almost everything else I see around here....And now - as the deadly cycles of overpopulation, pollution, depletion of resources, radio-activity and conflict escalate towards a cataclysmic sauve-qui-peut - thoughtful citizens are asking thems

In the USA we sometimes salivate like a Pavlov's dog. Othertimes we're so shy, got to be worked on, don't have no bark or bite.

Not having heard the new one yet I'd just like to mention again that his last one, "Not for Beginners" was (notwithstanding lame cover art) a beautiful, soulful and deeply felt recording.

The SW/UJ tours were too constricted, what with Matt Clifford's samples (?) & a 'play it like the record' feel after the sometimes shambolic '81-82 tours...The early part of ABB displayed a more relaxed band, tight yet dirty and funky sounding. I like the No Security setlist (CD I mean), but I also think the BB 4 disc video set & Shine a Light (Jap cd & movie) are

The Stones are hardly a "horn, b.v., Keyboards" band. The horns are mostly used appropriatly, hardly for the entire show, as the Stones' rock & roll is so drenched in soul/r&b, as has been the case (aside from '75 & '78) since 1970. Leavell was less obtrusive last tour than on Licks or Babylon...And they do against all odds perform inspired versions of many of

Well imo Ron's previous attempts at a commercial album (Gimme Some Neck, some of 1234) are his worst. Now Look is superb. And Not For Beginners a small masterpiece - his most organic musically, inspired and deeply felt.

In rough order, No Security, Bigger Bang, Licks, Bridges, Voodoo, Steel Wheels. They seemed to gain a bit more confidence after the overly careful '89-90 tours...And D. Jones took a couple tours to find his groove.

I did a brief phone interview in '96, which I tried without success to publish, to coincide with his first Nicklebag album and the Charlie Watts "Long Ago & Far Away" disc...He appreciates it if you're familiar with his non Stones career (he's on lots of great Bill Laswell produced projects, which is how MJ met him, I think). Very bright and articulate guy.

Love the 1997 WA album, which is not for the AC/DC fan in any of us, but give it a chance, with time it will grow on you. Keith's production/playing is very underststed and self effacing.

First got "Through The Past Darkly" for xmas 1970, when I was 10. Knew JJFlash & Honky Tonk from Top 40. Was intrigued by the cover, especially in contrast to the Beatles covers to Abbey Road and Hey Jude. I mean how could I not be impressed by the black smear on Keith's eyelid. Got Ya Yas next, then in '72 Sticky, Exile, & More Hot Rocks. First album bought upon relea

Seems like a pretty dark piece of music, with all the drug references and post 60s ennui.

reVoodoo, I think it's a fine album, and as a 65 minute cd (2 minutes shorter than Exile) it misses my top 7 due to a few less than thrilling cuts - Sparks will Fly, I go Wild. But songs like Thru & Thru, Blinded by Rainbows, Worst, Baby Break it Down, New Faces, etc - they are really underrated. And the four single sides are all good. Not to mention goodies on V.Brew/Stew.

Why must these threads degenerate into Taylor good/ Wood bad rhetoric. I'd rather hear Wood's Now Look or Faces or 'No Use Crying' or Handsome Girls and the verions of 'Undercover' or 'You Got The Silver' from 'Shine a Light'....But I can still give credit to Taylor for 4 or 5 great Stones years, and on some occasions since (i.e. w. Carla Olsson)

pmk251 Don Was is on record as saying it's a very personal and intimate song to Mick, not to say that makes it good (early Jewel was 'personal' too). But its hard to believe we're hearing the same live/studio performances. And I disagree re Micks vocal live - sure he dances and moves, creating excitement during the choruses.

Nice article, and amazing they kept this under wraps in true Stones fashion. Two points: re earlier post, I dont believe that Keith dont do heroin/drugs/albohol anymore - Less, sure, but he's always sneered at the whole recovery idea. And, most cancers have genetic predisposition. But finally Im glad its she, not KR, that's the republican.

Wish the album would get released. I LOVE the raw, emotionally unguarded, 'Not For Beginners', with its layered acoustic/electric/slide/pedal steels and standup/electric basses, mandolins etc - reminiscent of the Mercury Rod albums (Gasoline Alley esp) or "Long Player".

I have no interest in Mel G but remember this tape was made surreptitiosly by the woman who was court ordered NOT to release it, and who has financial/custodial motives in allowing Mel to hang himself, while she remains calm and rational, stop and start buttons at the ready. No blaming the victim/wife for his personality problems, but in Hollywood, these things always have plenty of angles...What

I personally think MT was a superb choice in 1969, and contributed mightily to Ya Yas, Sticky, Exile, - then, with Keith nodding into his GH soup for much of that album, or playing bass, Taylor's lyricism really shines: on Winter, 100Years, Heartbreaker, etc. However I always felt his work on IORR is overrated, and since he didnt bother to appear for some of the IORR sessions its no wonder.

Out of Control was a live highlight beginning with the Bridges tour - & always recieved w/enthusiasm from crowds, even the early part of ABB tour. I've considered Bridges overall to be a very underrated latter-day RS album.

Now Look is a great album - with Womack as prime collaborator it suggests Sly's "Riot" meets Black & Blue era Stones. His best solo set, along with the underrated 'Not For Beginners'.

Ya Yas' Stripped Shine a Light No Security Best think about Flashpoint is the 2 studio tracks (and 'Factory Giirl). Too controlled, too many Matt Clifford effects. Still Life has its moments, 20 Flight and Go Go, and the band is loose, but Jagger sounds disconnected and out of shape. LYL is marred throughout by Jagger's compulsive slurring and avoidance of consonants and half

Japanese vinyl I have is a beautiful (and great sounding) pressing, housed in a typically Japanese sturdy cover - original cover art, I meant to say, which is very cool & superior to the bland graphics used for the'95 CD edition.

Actually DW sold about the same as Undercover in the US. Undercover peaked at #4 (23 weeks total), DW also peaked at #4 (25 weeks charted). Harlem Shuffle was a top 5 hit single, too.

#2 to # 7 isnt a 'huge' drop in the soundscan era. I recall many titles that debuted at # 1 dropping out of the top 10 in second week, and top 10 debuts that have seen truly dramatic drops the following week, i.e. various Prince albums post '95.

Well I liked the New Barbs and in retrospect it's probably better the tour isnt remembered for superstar guest shots (rather shots of dope and coke). The flaws that plagued the NBs (voices shot, looseness slipping into sloppiness) were addressed for Wood's 1992-93 tours, with Bernard Fowler, McLagan, etc. Slide On Live especially with the two bonus tracks recorded in the mid 90s, holds

Great and singular in the Stones catalog, DW vividly exposes the 80s culture of greed/Thatcher/Reagan etc & is just as unforgiving and harsh exploring the fractious state of the Stones. Jagger never sounded less feline, more direct Minor irritations in the production, but the record's power is undiminished imo.

Actually I might more easily afford a 2 disc deluxe edition - or even better that as part of a 'complete Atlantic Recordings" box - those studio albums feature King Curtis, Duane Allman, Gram Parsons, Little Richard, etc and have never been out on CD in the US.

The 'chick' backing vocals are by (mostly) New Orleans legends/expatriates living in LA - like the RS, Exiles on MS - Dr John, Tammi Lynn, etc are only on what, four songs? The finished T,Dice has more of its NOLA flavour thanks tothe bv's and horns. But what they add to Let it Loose renders it all the more sublime, and cathartic emotionally. On ADTL they're I suppose Ikettes.
