Any band's best live? Yes include a Stones reference

Things we know:

Not all recorded songs work live at 30,000 watts.
Each band has at least one song that works so well live, a 'definitive' musical experience, maybe a song that defines the band or just blew you away.

Below are my favorite live songs, one per band, roughly in order of overall preference:

RS - Gimme Shelter (glad to see the poll backed me on this one, of course MR is close)
CSN - Suite Judy Blue Eyes (back in the day when Steven could pull this off flawlessly)
The Who - We Won't Get Fooled Again (easy one)
Allman Brothers - Jessica (funny but was it not that dredded Chuck L. at the keyboards?)
CCR - It Came Out of the Sky (possibly the cleanest use of rock guitar licks and rythem)
John Prine with Steve Goodman - Souveniers (best guitar duet of our time)
Stevie Wonder - Sir Duke
Paul Simon - Late In The Evening (did you catch that reunion tour, arrogant SOB played the song twice, good thing I love it)
J. Geils - Whammer Jammer
Jonel Mosser - not sure of title but I wept along with the rest of the audience

Funny though, there are some bands for which nothing stands out for me, Springstein, Greatfull Dead amonst others.

So what has impressed you?

London Calling is hard to resist and impossible to forget, talk about an opener.

Marley and the Wailers was an amazing concert, hard to pick just one tune.

Ten Years After, I'm Going Home

and pretty much any Buddy Guy song you happen to hear at Legends, it's a nice way to spend a cold night in January; I'll pick Feels Like Rain.

Yeah, and he wrote "Rainy Night in Georgia," too. There's some variety for you...

DES....when I said 'actualy' it meant a reference to him writing it and how many could say they actualy saw him. Next to Jerry Reed he was quite adept at the SE swamp guitar style and knocked off a mean ballad on his 'white' baby grand, great vioce, very tallented. And he played RNIG during that CCR gig, quite correct on variety.

Just have been to a Coldplay gig a few days ago. And I can say that one of those great live songs is going to be their latest single "Viva la Vida". I don't like this song on the record, but when you hear this one live it's a totally different experience. Awesome sing along chorus at the end.

So I go for Coldplay's "Viva la Vida"

"Midnight Rambler"; "Gimme Shelter" -Stones
"No Quarter"- Led Zeppelin
"Cortez The Killer"- Neil Young (preferably w/ Crazy Horse)
"Suite: Judy Blue Eyes"- CSNY (agreed- when Stills could still pull it off vocally)

I saw Neil Young and Crazy Horse do Like a Hurricane at the Palladium in NYC in November '76, about eight months before it was released on American Stars and Bars and long before that song turned into a total feedback assault. That was pretty amazing!

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers- just saw them back in June and they did 'Don't Come Around Here No More' and the ending was just bananas with Mike Campbells' wah-wah solo and Petty moving around the stage with this stobe light flashing.
Clapton/Cray-87' with Phil Collins on drums, it was the encore song of Further On Up The Road that pulled this otherwise slick show off its' ass with Clapton and Robert Cray trading some really fine licks. I got a copy of the show just for this song. Cray had just broken open with 'Strong Persuder'
Allman Brothers-2007 Boston second show with Mountain Jam>Dazed and Confused>Mountain Jam how's that for a twenty minute encore.
