I recall getting the CBS Sony cds and being disgusted by the thin, early digital sound which was deeply inferior to the best 1st pressing vinyl editions, esp UK Japan and (Exile for instance) US. Virgins were a significant upgrade, and now with all the improvements plus state of the music industry I expect the Universals to be improvements too.

They will be, John.

But you can also bet there will be plenty of complaints ... about how Universal has "brickwalled" the sound and how this or that is too loud. I guarantee it, just check out this board on May 4.

Wow, didn't realise how Licks could have turned out. What a difference.

It is interesting that Universal is not going to bother with any live albums. At least as we know so far. Yet they did reissue Got LIVE If You Want It for some bizarre reason. But that's ABKCO.

I wonder how the ABKCO catalogue has sold. Big Hits, Flowers, Big Hits 2, Hot Rocks, More Hot Rocks, Rolled Gold and The London Years. Any other hits comps I'm missing that came out? Oh yeah - Forty Licks.

Look at how long it took Virgin to reissue Made In The Shade (???? what for? The artwork!? I knew some people in high skool that had Made In The Shade but did not have Rewind - go figure) and Sucking In The Seventies - what, 10 years later? Whenever it was.

I'm still convinced that if Virgin had put out Rewind - and Time Waits For No One - they would have sold considerably well. Even as redundant as they would have been.

Oh and has anyone of these earlier track listings gotten pressed and out into some lucky high bidders hands? I bet not since there's no soundboard version of Parachute Woman available to the public

i have a feeling the stones cant be bothered with serching through tapes to find unreleased material that is if they even kept any of them. without the proper care, old tapes will fall apart after awhile or stick together but i do have to wonder about why exile will be released at the end of ther yr. i'm ondering if it will be a deluxe , mick has said the wrong mixes were used for the album and keith has mentioned wanting to put out unreleased material

"i have a feeling the stones cant be bothered with serching through tapes to find unreleased material"
Yes it boils down to the Stones's current major flaw : laziness...
Compare to what Dylan does : tours, radio shows, new music, 2 books (not shadow-written btw...)

Yes- Dylan is a bit of a standard bearer (as has always been the case).
It seems he gets to the studio with all his material (lyric wise certainly) and ready to go.
The Stones seem to prat about for months on end...is that what rock 'n roll is all about? I don't think so.
I think that bands in general do have more problems than solo acts in getting their act together, inevitable I suppose.
For Mick though, he does have many other interests, his film production company being the obvious one. And he travels a lot, so you could argue its a more balanced life than Dylan's
Who knows? Its their choice.

There are still SACD:s being released. Most classical music but also, not too long ago the Genesis box and Marvin Gays What's going on.

You wonder if the Stones have had any more influence (or involvement) in this re-release series than the ABKCO sets.
So much for "owning" their own material.

I expect a new remastered sound and that's it. No outtakes or alternate takes.

Justin (and also Hound Dog and Casinoboogie) made this prediction back on Day 1 last August (see Page 1 of this endless thread), and obviously they were spot on. You gotta respect that.

Where do you guys see things in the Stones department 5 years from now?

I never really considered this live but regardless I was talking about the rendition played in Boston. Being a musician who has played a few venues small stuff for Television is nothing like a standard concert.

Exile is the 14th disc. It says to house all 14. So there is nothing else planned obviously. Mick should change it to 'What a drag it is getting reissued over and over'. I bet Exile comes with some goofy rapper with a big sticker of the dude with the balls or whatever they are in his mouth and that's it.

It's just getting more and more disappointing huh. So much for a new album. Nobody's gonna care after these reissues come out...because nobody's gonna care about them! AAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the box is for the LP reproductions only. They're not likely to do special packaging for when they get around to live albums (2012 at a guess) and certainly not for the compilations, its just for the studio album reissues like Virgin did in 1994 for STICKY FINGERS through TATTOO YOU.

They should do what Grand Funk did with their "Trunk of Funk". When you bought the trunk it came with 4 of the remastered cds, and space for the remaining 8 in the series. Though the cds had additional songs and updated liner notes.

It's so very lonely, you're 2,000 Light Years from home
