A fella named Keith went on a cod binge. He was surrounded by enablers from out of town, and the owner of the chip shop had to call the cops.

This is babel of tongues to me. Why is a store where you buy fish called a chip shop? Why do limeys call their french fries chips? (In Sweden chips means crispies and french fries are called pommes frittes). Buy the way, do the yanks still call their fries Freedom Fries? Is there anyone learned in the art of glottology on the forum?

Because the hub ingredient in a chip shop is chips..... Fish & chips, Pie & chips, Pastie & chips, Sausage & chips, Rissole & chips etc etc......& lately Curry sauce and chips.........
I guess they're called chips because they're a chip off a potato...............
......Why French fries ?....why not Italian fries or Spanish.........? or American fries as the potato originated there....??

As always Wikipedia is at our service:

"Eating potatoes was promoted in France by Parmentier, but he did not mention fried potatoes in particular. Many Americans attribute the dish to France and offer as evidence a notation by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. "Pommes de terre frites à cru, en petites tranches" ("Potatoes deep-fried while raw, in small cuttings" in a manuscript in Thomas Jefferson's hand (circa 1801-1809) and the recipe almost certainly comes from his French chef, Honoré Julien.[15] In addition, from 1813[16] on, recipes for what can be described as French fries occur in popular American cookbooks. By the late 1850s, one of these mentions the term "French fried potatoes".[17]

In the UK "fries" (French or otherwise) are those thin weedy things that Macdonalds sell you:

Chips are an altogether sturdier species:

That first pic might have been made with trans-fats.

What do the chip shops tend to use ?

My local 'chippie' uses ground nut oil..........(I don't know if it's true or not but I heard that those Fatdonald's things are not even proper potatoes - reconstituted or something whatever that entails, cooked in as you say - trans-fats..angry smiley).............Stoneage....interesting Wiki clip.......thumbs up

...and as it happens, Wikipedia is wrong:

French fries comes from the verb 'to french'; to slice/ cut in little pieces. It used to be 'frenchED fries'.

Nothing to do with France.

Fine with me, Filip. But before I change my mind: What is your source then? In Sweden they are called "Pommes Frites" which has an unequivocal French origin.

Well, first of all I'm Belgian; just like these fries... (and like so many other 'gourmet' things that are considered 'French' worldwide; partly due to a better-working marketing department in Paris, I reckon. cool smiley)

Second: I got no source to quote - I just know its derived from the English verb 'to french', and that it used to be 'frenched'... Maybe some native-English lingo-professor on the forum could give the thumb-up? (I myself heard it from an English teacher I met whilst travelling, quite a few years ago; and I saw it confirmed at least two times afterwards...)

As for the 'Pommes frites' question: half of Belgium officialy speaks French.

You are right on first count, Filip. Let me change my phrase to "unequivocal French speaking origin" then. I know Belgium has a world renowned cuisine so it might be a Belgian dish to start with. Who knows?
