Try a capo on the 4th fret and from there work it by ear. It really is the best way to learn in my view.

I play it in Open G

Capo 4th fret

then on the 7th and 9th fret is where i put my fingers

The 4 means the capo on the 4th

D -4-4--------------------4-4
B -4-4--------------------4-4
G -4-4------7-----7-----7-4-4
D -4-4--7-9---7-9---7-9---4-4
G -4-4--------------------4-4
- ---------------------------
or with strumming all the strings

D -4-4--4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4
B -4-4--4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4
G -4-4--4-4-7-4-4-7-4-4-7-4-4
D -4-4--7-9-4-7-9-4-7-9-4-4-4
G -4-4--4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4
- ---------------------------

Thats How i play it, I have done it so many times and i have always been told that it sounds perfect

Keith plays JJF live in Open G. The studio recording I believe, is in standard tuning.

they're the same: open D is just open E down a step (2 frets). I thought the original was somewhere in between (open Eb), due either to tuning or tape speed irregularity. But it's that pattern, on the studio cut. There are more definitive answers on this board, if you search "flash" and "tuning."

actually playing along in standard tuning for example with the YaYa's version it gets pretty close too. 7th fret, also the r&r circus version sounds standard tuning

The Open D version, studio version always sounds right but when I play it in open G, it can sound right but one thing bugs me, he hits the b-chord without the lefthand.

You do exactly the same riff in openG as in openE. But remember capo on 4th fret.

D -4-4--------------------4-4
B -4-4--------------------4-4
G -4-4------7-----7-----7-4-4
D -4-4----4-7---4-7---4-7-4-4
G -4-4--9-----9-----9-----4-4
- ---------------------------

This is how Keith plays it. With capo 4th fret. The 4's is the capo-position. (Not written as loose strings...)

You can also add:
D -4-4--------------------4-4
B -4-4--------------------4-4
G -4-4----4-7---4-7---4-7-4-4
D -4-4----4-7---4-7---4-7-4-4
G -4-4--9-----9-----9-----4-4
- ---------------------------

The chorus is standard Keith-riffing with index finger on 7th. 14th. and 9th.
The rest is easy to figure out.

But is it really the same riff pattern as in open E/D?

No, because you need to shift everything one string up. And I don't think he uses a capo on the studio version.

Yes, this is the way Keith plays it live - in open G. The studio recording is probably in open E though and the version from the Rock'n' Roll Circus is in standard tuning.
I personally play it also this way in open G - it sounds absolutly right.

Yeah no capo on studio version, is there a good video of JJF in open G?

The open E studio version features multiple guitars playing the riff in different positions. It is not a case of moving everything one string up.

I think the Rock n' Roll Circus version is also standard tuning.
I can only hear one guitar on that verion - where's Brian???

Brian was muted out during the whole Circus concert. Just Keith all over the show except No Expectations, I think.

There's two guitars in the studio version. The guitar that plays the intro is in standard tuning with a capo on the 3rd fret. The other guitar which plays the main riff is in open E (which can be open D with a capo on the 2nd fret).

RnR Circus version is in standard tuning, using just basic powercords for the main riff and the classic Keef barchords just shifted a step down from the studio version.

Does he use a 5 string for it live though?

There's more than 2 guitars on the single, and the first 2 we hear are definitely tuned to open E without a capo on the 3rd fret.

With capo on the 4th fret, B is the open chord in openG tuning winking smiley Maybe you play the riff differently?
