Despite Tonight being a mess of an album, "Blue Jean" is a song I could leave on repeat for an hour.

"Blue Jean" is really a great great song

And let's not forget the great Toni Visconti..............

First time I read this...........Bolan in de Bowie Band!!!!

Even if he'd done nothing else in his career, Visconti should have been given a Lifetime Achievement Award for that drum sound on 'Always Crashing in the Same Car' alone.

Indeed it is. I gave Tonight 3/10 because it has three songs on it - Blue Jean, Loving The Alien and his version of Don't Look Down isn't bad. The title track is a wretched travesty of the original.

.... and for his work with Thin Lizzy. "Live & Dangerous" is one of the greatest live albums ever released, despite being ... urm ... 70 - 80% overdubbed.

If you combine the few (and I mean few) good tracks from NLMD and some from Tonight and great soundtrack stuff like Absolutely Beginners and This Is Not America you get a really solid 80s Bowie album. Sure would've been better if he took a few years and put it out instead of Tonight and NLMD.

and word of a new album, possibly titled "Blackstar"

There IS a new album, Blackstar, out on Bowie's birthday, Jan. 8 (same as Elvis) and the title track will be released Nov. 20.
He also has a play that he has written, Lazarus, opening next month in NYC. He's not in it though, but has written some new music for it, and it's based on his character in The Man Eho Fell to Earth. Interesting article about the production in today's NY Times. I'm going DEc. 9. Will post a report. It's a tiny theater and tix for the run are sold out.

Tonight & Never Let Me Down are great Bowie-albums both and I love them to death. There are so many great songs on these albums, you cant count them all. Neighborhood Threat, Dont Look Down, Tonight, Blue Jean, Too Dizzy, Beat Of Your Drum, Time Will Crawl, Bang Bang... lots and lots of goodies. Not a single weak song on these albums. Peter Frampton is marvelous on NLMD. The Glass Spider Tour was awesome too.

Well,
I don't think HMS is taking the piss. And there are some decent songs on both Tonight and NLMD, and some horrid ones as well! I always liked Loving the Alien (and especially like the slower acoustic version he did live on the Reality tour), Dancing with the Big Boys is good, as is Tumble and Twirl. Tonight, the song, he butchers. NLMD was a strange bag. TERRIBLE production, but some good songs, Time Will Crawl, Never Let Me Down, Zeroes, were all great. But man, there are some terrible stuff on that albums as well. His low point, and even he agreed it wasn't a good time in his life and career.

..anyway Station to Station > Scary Monsters is quite ubeatable as best 5-in-row-albums.

2 1 2 0

Agree, Loving the Alien is a beautiful song but the rest a real low point artistically. Now everyone has there own opinion, I happen to love Tin Machine and I know a lot of people hate them so to each his own.

You know, except for his better run of Man Who Sold The Earth > Diamond Dogs LOL.

Well not sure it is a better run! Both are damn impressive for a solo artist!

whitem8,

Did you buy a Japanese edition of Five Years 1969 - 1973?
The sound was amazing, especially for Pinups and Space Oddity.
Japanese edition comes with "BOWIE By Masayoshi Sukita in 1972-1973" and "FIVE YEARS 1969-1973 in JAPAN".

Toru,
No I didn't get the Japanese edition! I bought mine here in the US. It sounds great. . .

So from what I understand vinyl is no longer pressed in Japan? IS that true?

whitem8,
Vinyl records pressing plant like Toyokasei is now running in full operation thanks to the resurgence of vinyl boom here in Japan, I believe.

I'd settle for a run from 'David Bowie' (aka Space Oddity) to Scary Monsters. A run to rival the Beatles.

I agree, not a bad one in the lot from Man Who Sold the World to Scary Monsters. Space Odity is ok...but a bit too folky for him.

Only 7 songs? Wow. Not that I'm judging him. I actually would rather that. You just don't see it much nowadays.

I kept scrolling thinking I was missing something. Very odd, and honestly makes me a little reluctant. Either way, he does not look too well, skinnier than 2013...
