Quick Vote - nicky hopkins vs. billy preston

Much as I love the '73 european boots (like everyone else) I still love the warmth of '72 and early '73--mostly because of nicky hopkins vs. billy preston.

Which do you prefer--the acoustic piano hopkins sound or the organesque preston sound?

I agree with you for the exact reasons you've said! I prefer hopkins playing. it makes for an overall warmer sound,

Two very different sounds.....I vote for Nicky, though an honorable mention should go out to Billy Preston for his dance during his song, "That's The Way God Planned It" during the evening show of the Banladesh benefit concert.....

Thommie--Hopkins got drug sick after the '73 australian tour

Nicky without a doubt. Great sense of style and form, wonderful touché and never ever obtrusive. And he had a fine musical rapport with Mick Taylor, the other half of the two graces. I could listen to their Tumbling Dice codas forever.

I do like Billy's playing on the '75 tour on songs like IYCRM/Cloud but sometimes it was just too much.

If I didn't mention clearly enough, I too am thoroughly in the Hopkins camp. I found Preston's bombast way too much, esp. in 75/76. Why he was given a solo shot is beyond me--would rather have seen Woody get a number back then--Preston's bits completely altered the pacing of those shows, in my opinion for the worst. Hopkins was elegant, tasteful and added a beautiful layer to some already incredible performances.

Yeah, but Stu didn't have as concrete a role on the major tours, did he? I remember him sitting in in '75, I know about the early years, but on the "organized" jaunts, unless you were introduced by Jagger, I dunno...
