OT: Concert for Princess Di on VH1/MTV
Posted by: HelterSkelter ()

So what did everybody think of the show? (It was on MTV2 and VH1/1 hour delay on VH1 Classics in the USA and I'm sure something similar in the UK/Europe)

I thought it was a bit better than expected:

DURAN DURAN - just about exactly what one expected (RIO + 1 more I think)
ELTON JOHN - should have played "GOODBYE ENGLISH ROSE". "TINY DANCER" was good IMHO
ROD STEWART - had a lot of energy and looked good - slimmed down, well dressed - but song selection (MAGGIE MAY, BABY JANE) were totally predictable. SAILING was nice.....
TAKE THAT - listenable, not too bad actually - surprised me
SUPERTRAMP GUY - the best of ST solo on Keyboard/Guitar in 15 minutes - not bad
JOSS STONE - This babe got hit with a lucky stick at birth to get THAT VOICE but I thought her set list was so so - UNDER PRESSURE (QUEEN) instead of her very cool, funky "SEAL THE DEAL" song was a bad move I thought - she's a very natural performer with some good moves AND, she's VERY easy on the eyes - Helter might even be willing to take her out to Blackpool or even Paris possibly

HIGHLIGHTS IMO:

BRYAN FERRY - SLAVE TO LOVE/MAKE YOU FEEL MY LOVE (Dylan)/LET'S STICK TOGETHER - smart set list (could have used a ROXY MUSIC selecton but still worked well)

TOM JONES/JOE PERRY/JOSS STONE (on last song only) - KISS (Prince)/I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor/Upbeat R'n'B Standard - well balance set list, Aerosmith's Perry added more of a rockin' edge to the sound. Joss was excellent with Tom on the 3rd one.

P DIDDLY - turned Wembley into a giant Gospel Church with his hit "MISSING YOU" Is that the title? where they use the Police's "EVERY BREATH" quite liberally - Thought he really got the crowd going and was one of the most moving performances reminding us a lot about Diana. Thought the other rap /hip hop guy did a great job (and I'm not a big Hip Hop fan)

Think that's it, there was a new band from America that can use a different lead singer.... Did I leave anything out? So what did you think? Leave a review....

it would be very ,very, easy to be cynical about this event and the BBC's coverage of it.
However, i watched most of yesterday's coverage - and yes, for the most part the music was of a poor quality...
(Rod Steward, Bryan Ferry being 2 of the few performances, of note)
but the event was sincere, everyone was happy and smiling and seemed to be enjoying themselves (and at a time when London and the UK is at a 'critical', state of threat, that is no bad thing.)

It was 2 young men paying tribute and remembering their late, much loved mother, on what would have been her 46th birthday...
it's hard to knock that.

I agree Adrian, Nothing worse than young boys losing a mother too early. I always thought she was a very positive force on the planet, didn't get caught up in the tabloid aspect but that was much bigger in the UK than US....The show had it's ups and downs but I think there was quite a bit of pretty good to excellent music.....

the 2nd song, in Tom Jones' set, was a cover version of
The Arctic Monkey's classic, 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'

Oh yeah, ...Dancefloor - I actually liked that one A LOT - Tomes gotta great voice and always does great justice to cover songs... he used to be on Howard Stern all the time years ago, fantastic sense of humor about everything, a very cool guy.... Thanks for the Info, do you remember what song he did with Joss Stone? I know it's a classic R 'n B one, just can't think of the title........

Always this Elton John. He must have been on every single one of these kind of events. He´s a living saint and so lovable. He deserves a long vacation.

I personally find her, grating and overrated.
Her bare-foot, faux hippy schtick, screeching and straining is tiresome
in the extreme.

Tom Jones.....man all he can do is shout, sublety not in the book. I think he's basically a novelty act......loved by old ladies and gays (note now, I am not homophobic). Arctic Monkeys cover.....gimmick..foolish.

Joss Stone, well yes, good voice I agree, as for material, no, hype quotient......outta the roof.

Elton John, panto dame.

It all stank. It was an event, music was a secondary consideration.
I really dislike these big public 'conscience' events.....so fake.
Like people buying 'favours' from the church in the 17th century.

he does seem to have lost some of the power and ability in his voice, these last few years.
The ridiculous facelifts do not help his cause, either.
If his forehead/hairline get any higher, it'll be going down his back.

You guys are BRUTAL !! - lol Well, Joss does have a little hippie dippy thing going but maybe cause she's on the tall side so pefers to not look like she's towering over these guys, I don't know..... So did you guys like Live 8? I thought the Pink Floyd/U2/Macca stuff was good - no? All these shows are ALWAYS a mixed bag... Look at the SARS thing the Stones did in Toronto, ROCK ME BABY is quite good and unique on the DVD.....

...well, once you get that "BRAS and PANTIES thrown at you on stage" addiction going it's hard to not do WHAT EVER IT TAKES to keep it going somemore. I hear Tom gets the shakes on slow nights, not good......

It amused me to see people gyrating to music that they would, in the normal course of events, probably hit the off button or choke on their own vomit too.
'Rockin' all over the world' - 'Sailing' - 'Rio'.
I am not a royalist, they are all a load of stuck up, toffee nosed, piles of puss.

all i watched was Rod Stewart...and a few minutes of Diddy.
Overall I like Rod Stewart but his vocals were rough...he was screaming as if
he didn't have a microphone. I've seen some recent footage of his arena/theater
shows and he still sings nicely....not sure why he didn't try to control his voice a bit more.

Turned off Diddy and went to see George Thorogood & the Destroyers at
Summerfest (Milwaukee). He's still a rockin' performer. A good time was had
by all.

IORR............but I like it!

Load of old bollocks if you ask me.
Problem with these events is that you get a bunch of performers who may wellto help a worthy cause besides getting the kudos and publicity...which is fair enough...but everybody just goes pleasantly through the motions. Nobody MEANS it .

I didn’t watch it but doing so isn’t required to realise that the whole concept around which this show was built was quite absurd. I have some amount of respect for Rod Stewart and Bryan Ferry but you can forget the rest – it’s rubbish.

A (rather harsh) quotation from a certain gossip website:

"Well done Harry and well done Will
For getting someone else to sort out a concert because your attention seeking whore of a mother is dead."

Agree with the sentiment if not the expression!

I cant write what I would like to write, but i would love the oppurtunity to answer some of you face to face, particularly the mongrel who wrote the last post. BV this is some of the worst political shit I have ever witnessed on this board, what do you intend doing about it.

whiskey - apparently, it was for her 46th birthday even though she's been dead for nearly 10 years - is this not absurd? Or perhaps it was only self-reflexive backslapping after all.
