Is the show over after the 8th song?
Posted by: The Sicilian ()

Looking at the setlists so far, by the time the 8th song finishes, the show enters the Keith run and the warhorse run for the bus saga.

To me, aside from "Start Me Up", songs 2 thru 8 have been interesting but expected somewhat. When Keith is finished so are the surprises and any chance to hear some obscure songs. I would say it is disappointing.

No Stones show is over 'till it's over, but I do wish they would mix it up a bit more.

In Paris, they had "It's All Over Now" at spot 13 which represents a good change to me.

By the time the 13th song rolls around you are already in denial that the worhorses won't end quick enough.

Your right Sicilain. That's basicly what a Stones show has become for the last several tours. You wait to see what nuggets they might pull out early in a show then, with the exception of the ocassional B Stage switch you get a variation of warhorses.

Wait, they just unexpectedly switched a later song in, last night.

At first glance I thought this was more set list whining but you may have a point to some degree. They have been doing a better job at mixing in new songs but from the Keith set onwards it can lack variety.

They should move up some warhorses to the first half so you still get some surprises in the second half. They don't have to finish with six straight warhorses.

Imo Keith should do "All About You" in his set- much better than I Wanna Hold You. Just to mix it up they should try switching vocals too. Once in awhile have Keith sing a Mick song like JJF and have Mick sing a Keith song- just to mix it up.

It's not over after the 8th song. Why would it be? We get all the great songs like Sugar and Flash in that section. There is NOTHING more satisfying than seeing The Stones do JJF today.

Off course it's not over after the 8th song, it's just that you know you'll get a couple of warhorses with a few minor changes on the b-stage. IMHO, the 2nd hour of the show is the grande finale. Give me another band that is able to end a show with such greatest hits, there's none!

No band whatsoever would do a consert without the warhorses, U2, Who, Oasis, Macca you name it - no one....

Why can't then Stones do a show with 10 warhoses???

Yeah but they still produce music and they perform well and even new versions of their songs.

They did the "new" 19th Nerveous Breakdown and got their teeth kicked in for it. OK it would be cool if they did a concert of material from 1989 to 2007 only, but then there'd be an empty stadium with the golden circle filled with happy IORReans. If they did such a gig it would have to be in small clubs (And how does one secure that only real fans get in, when all the casuals also want to see them in clubs)?

Funny how the Rolling Stones career mimmicks the British invasion...Their career started as The Rolling Stones 60's and 70's, they disappeared during the 80's, early 90's so, they could be referred as...The Who? Now..their predictable setlist and uninspired playing...they are sinking like a Led Zeppelin.

Sad to see my musical heroes go out this way. Is it...All Over Now? or can they come back and be Respectable?

As a long-established "set-list whiner" (as opposed to being an obedient unquestioning sycophant) I came to the conclusion long ago, that the choice of songs is a mere slippers-and-pipe comfort-zone for both fans and the band members themselves.

Sometimes I wonder how distressing it must be for many of you comfort-zoners and apologists out there, to hear something new for the first time. Is it a fear of the unfamiliar perhaps, or a slowing down of your brain's motor skills, or just simply a lack of patience?

For what it's worth, my own opinion is that after the 8th song, it's more or less auto pilot for everyone.

Still, I can recall Jagger commenting once that there was a certain art in repetition. If there is, then he really is an artist in every sense of the word. To appear so animated and involved is very impressive indeed. I only wish he'd have had the guts to practice what he preached in Dance Pt1 when he urged us to "get up and get out into something new".

If only.

as neither a "setlist professional whiner" nor an "apologist comfort-zoner" I am sick and tired of this comedy where people either repetitevely lament the repetitiveness of the bands shows or go autopilot "they dont owe us nothing"...

there's a lot of people here that dont fit this grotesque picture, the fact is that they, we dont spam the boards as you

Don't remember U2 doing new version of old songs, neither Macca, Madonna, Genesis etc.....

True Stones doesn't produce much new music - but at least 2 years ago....

REM is great in concert and they play some obscurities just before the show comes to its end which is what some people would love to see The Stones do.On the other hand REM criminally neglect their best work from eighties. The Stones never neglect their best work. When you go to see The Stones, you are bound to hear some of their greatest songs like JJF,YCAGWYW,Tumbling Dice,Pain it Black.....Yeah it all seems too predictable but they also throw in some half forgotten gems like She was hot,She's so cold,It's all over now etc. Give them a break. They are too old to make many setlist variations.

To have a problem like that is nothing but song #6 of It's only Rock 'n' Roll.

I think we could probably fill spot 7 with Midnight Rambler or Can't You Hear Me Knocking. I'm fine with that rotation because I believe Rambler gets played too much. If we are going to have a long jam in there it should be something a bit more fresh.

The show I believe is over after Keith, but only in terms of surprises. We all know what's coming. Sure, the songs are great ones but how nice would it be to have something like All Down The Line towards the end? I remember in Columbus 97 I was surprised that You Got Me Rocking got played during the ending sequence.

I was pleasantly surprised by Respectable on the B-stage the other night. In my view they have killed the B-stage with lack of imagination. Anything can be played out there. Just look at past tours: Crazy Mama, The Last Time, Beast of Burden, etc. Keep the songs the same for the rollout and rollback, but consistently change the numbers on it.

the problem i have is not that the stones do warhorses.

it is what constitutes a war horse.

there is average songs they have as a warhorse while others, and i mean over 100 songs that are better rarely get a look in, some never get played at all.

if it was up to me.

i would have maybe 5 or 6 warhorses from this list every show.

jumpin jack flash
paint it black
brown sugar

would be ever presents.

the last time
midnight rambler
gimme shelter
honky tonk woman
rocks off
satisfaction

would be rotated so each song got 1 concert in 2.

that would mean 6 songs from warhorses.

and the other 14 songs would come from a list of over 150
songs.

meaning those songs would get played every 10 or 11 concerts.

this would result in a different set list over a 10 concert time span.

instead.

its only rock and roll
honky tonk woman
you got me rocking

get played to death every night while

better songs rarely get mentioned.
