This is definitely Keith speaking Keithlanguage! Wisely spoken, too.
ROLLING STONES star KEITH RICHARDS has blasted the stars of hip-hop - because he hates anything to do with rap. The rocker admits he dislikes everything about rap music, and can't name an act he's at all fond of. He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "Hip-hop leaves me cold. But there are some people out there who think it's the meaning of life. "I don't wanna be yelled at; I wanna be sung to. I never really understood why someone would want to have some gangster from L.A. poking his fingers in your face. "As I say, it don't grab me. I mean the rhythms are boring; they're all done on computers."
I prefer older artists telling what they dislike, no matter if it make them "unhip", to those who pretend they love new bands and trends and then sits at home and listen to Mozart and Bach, puffing the pipe by the fireside.

I'm not saying anyones pretending to be hip!! But surely its more immature to dismiss whole genres of music whilst suggesting ur still some big drug user!!

You suggested that an artist like Pete Townshend may play with 'new' bands to appear cool/trendy. I'm saying that Townshends attitude to embrace latest bands is far more relevant than continually dismissing whole sections of popular music whilst embarrassing yourself with stupid comments ie: snorting blow!
Anyway, dont they just love it when they can squeeze such punchy one-liners from ol' Keef. When it comes to Jagger's feverish followin' of new music and Keef's backwards walking I'm sure there are holes and nuances in that notion.

Who aint fed up with the crap-blasted scene ya see today of any genre! Those one-liners might be charming & a precious Molotov cocktail for a thread or party or work break conversation.. But what does it do for the Common Good? A guy that loves Big Youth doesnt hate hiphop or rap entirely.
I like hiphop & jazz as phenomenons - but I'd rather die than listen to any of them more than a few minutes a week.
At first I was disappointed in Keith's outright dismissal of the unstoppable development of popular music. There was a time when Keith himslef was at the forefront and fought against close mindedness. "Your petty morals don't apply to us". But then I saw that he is speaking from a position of at least some knowledge. He just does not dig this particular breed of violent overt commercial bullshit rap.
"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."
If he doesn't like then he doesn't. It's not a maturity issue. He doesn't owe anyone anything on his taste, especially in the context of giving his solicited opinion. I agree with the comment in the topic line...AMEN!

completely agree - he should turn off the reggae, if only for a short while, and check out some new, fresh, exciting music.
who knows, it may even inspire his to pen a decent tune, or three, himsellf.
Exactly Adrian - perhaps if Keith absorbed some more of the great new bands around at the moment he may become inspired and ditch the stupid comments....
I suspect he looks like a silly old fool to most of the younger music lovers....
What new great bands? And what´s new about them, have they invented some new chords, instruments, scales or what? Everything has been done before and often better too. All these hyped groups that comes and goes without any staying power, bah. Besides the Stones was never about new music from the beginning, remember Dixon, Berry, Pickett etc was the inspiration right from the start.
This is the thing with Keith, he is very out of touch. Dislking rap (understandble perhaps), yet seemingly dismissing any of the latest great guitar bands is a little short sighted. This is why Jagger is so important. He keeps up to date with whats happening and brings it to the Stones. We'd just get albums of old blues covers if it was up to Keith!

I´ve heard a few of those bands, but I can´t for my life understand what´s so new and fresh about them. Arctic Monkeys... very refreshing thank you.
