>> I read, that Keith wrote it, and that it is about Anita.
And Keith's and Anita's daughter Dandelion changed her name into Angela <<

Keith wrote the music and specified that the name was Angie, for his then-new daughter,
who was given the name Dandelion Angela when she was born.
she was apparently called Angie right from the start.
everything i've read about it states that Mick completed the lyric, and that it's not about Angela Bowie.

this track still makes me wince. i know that's a failing on my part, and i'm trying to improve,
but the shock to my system when it came out was traumatic.

My vote goes to GHS as the most UNDERRATED Stones album. I put it at #6 overall. The only song I don't like on it....Angie....never liked it, never will. (except the Brussels version- which is off-the-charts).

don't give me that ole one two, one two three four

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the CRAP lyrics on GHS. Rhyming "New York city" and "West Virginny"? Or "Silver bells they're a-ringin', ding dong" and of course "with no lovin' in our souls and no money in our coats." Yikes!

I agree that despite some fine playing from Taylor, Silver Train is crap. Coming Down Again is too long and could have used a guitar solo from Taylor, whho is also mixed down too far on Winter.

I never listen to Mr D on GHS, though I can stand it on Brussels. CYHTM is pretentious. That said, I love 100 Years, Heartbreaker, Angie, HYL, and Star Star. But that' only half an album.

Considering the dope that was available back then, I consider those lyrics to be a valiant effort.

I see nothing wrong with those lyrics. Angie is a Stones classic, the best song on GHS, and overall one of their best ballads. F*ck all that "it's too sugary" shit.

Just where would that solo fit? Coming Down Again is perfect as it is, one of Keith's best songs.

In place of the sax solo, which is kind of turgid. Speaking of lyrics and Coming Down Again, I am remiss not to point out the song contains some of the BEST Stones lyrics ever:

"She was dying to survive."

"You turned green, and tried to make me cry/Bein' hungry, it ain't no crime."

Those of course are pure Keith.

Re: Angie, I put the song in the "great" category from GHS. The guitar and the melody (again pure Keith) mitigates the sub-standard lyrics IMHO.

Cheers!

People have made comments on the different "sound" on GHS.

That was very noticeable when it came out. More modern and professional, (less rough around the edges). Almost slick. Silver Train SOUNDED great,as did Dancing and Star Star, but they are not the best Stones' tunes by a long shot.

Remember Glam Rock was largelyaout creating a New Sound.

It's important to realise that production was going ahead leaps and bounds. Bands like Deep purple (Machine Head) and the stuff Bowie was doing - they sounded so cool - not to mention all the other prog-rock bands. This "sound revolution" is having it's influence on Mick J and what he wanted out of Miller.

IMHO GHS is one of my top 3 Stones albums.

Can't compare it with SF, perfect production, masterpiece but don't really like all of it.
Can't compare it with Exile, every inch of vinyl smells of freshness, lazy afternoons in the sun, a classic.

GHS is the gothic record the Stones had to make sooner or later, sometimes I think what it would've sounded like had someone like Bob Ezrin been the producer.

I mean, look at the songs, they all show hope and grieving, it's a very romantic record and it's quite funny that even though Keith Richards wasn't that much involved, it kinda reflects his personality.

My favourites? 100 Years Ago, Winter and Can You Hear the Music.

I was once in Helsinki with Andy McCoy of Hanoi Rocks talking about the Stones and our favourite records and we both talked about GHS being the misunderstood masterpiece.

It was hard following a record like Exile still they pulled it out.
GHS is awesome in my opinion, it just really doesn't sound like the 4 previous ones but, does Exile sound like SF?
Does SF sound like LIB?
Does LIB sound like BB?

Not at all, 5 great different souding records, 5 different kinds of inspiration.
With Andy McCoy I had this kind of telepathy experience, after we agreed on the fact that we did really love GHS we both started singing in sincronicity 100 Years Ago, an awesome track, one of my all time favourite Stones songs.

Anyway, one thing that kinda puzzles me is the fact that people always have a love/hate relationship with GHS, either you love it or you hate it, but what about IORR? That sounds to me like a throw-away album, always thought that is the very first weak record of the Stones' career, as B&B is again a great record.

Re: Goats Head Soup revisited

Agree on your analysis on GHS, but...

There is one thing that GHS doesn't have, that the previous four albums had: Great sound!

That, and the production (a bit weaker IMO) are plausible variables for stones fans to consider GHS a minor "let-down" after Exile.

BTW, Do you know Andy???

Yeah, I would never say we're buddies, but after doing an interview with him and spending a very Keith-a-like party-wild night together we do keep in touch and meet when possible.

Here's a photo of mine with him at Tavastia Club in Helsinki:

Well, between all that jewellery, the titanium heel in both is feet and the random drug search, guess it'd take him about 1 hour, when out of Finland.
Over there he is probably the most famous person in the whole country with Mika Hakkinen, so maybe they close an eye or two ...

I think GHS sounds great. Winter is great - they're all great! Too me, Winter seems like a 2nd cousin of Blood Red Wine, lyrically. Lotsa coat-wrappin' goin' on.

Funny how people say GHS sounds so clean and slick. Kinda slick in its style, yes, (especially compared to Exile) but it's still murky and swampy, IMHO. Of the Miller-produced albums, I think Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers have the cleanest production.

I agree, it's not slick in my ears either, it's very a dim, cool and dark sound,
I love it

I agree that overall it has a dark murky sound but I can also see how the two biggest hit songs from that album, Heartbreaker and Angie are slick sounding pop tunes when you compare them to the songs from Exile.

Those 2 songs are different from the rest of GHS, but I wouldn't call them slick sounding pop tunes, well at least not Heartbreaker, it's full throttle, futuristic rock

GHS has distinct ambieance and character. It's funny how it almost sounds like the colours of its packaging, too. A fine, fin album. I never get sick of it. The only thing I would change would be - Star Star as track 6, then bump the rest forward so 'Music' is last.

Actually, one could almost use a playlist program to create a 'Tattoo You' idea with it;

Dancing with Mr D
100 Years
Heartbreaker
Star Star
Silver Train
Hide Your Love
Angie
Coming Down Again
Winter
Can You Hear the Music

when I first started listening to Heartbreaker It reminded me of the theme song from "Shaft" by Issac Hayes.
