08.13 Pretenders @ Masonic (San Francisco)

Might want to be aware, at some shows Chrissie's gotten extremely pissed at people vidding with their phones. At DC Night 1, July 20 in the Warner Theater, once she got several songs in, she went after them and kept doing so off and on the rest of the night. She seemed angriest at people vidding from the closest rows... and was downright warring with some of them. "Don't be a c#nt." (One woman left in tears.) One improvised song lyric: "Take your phone and shove it up your ass." And other pleasantries.

She was frequently gesturing at individuals: Put it down! She ordered the stage lights be turned down. Ordered they be turned OFF. Encore 1 was mostly in darkness.

I convinced myself at the time that she and the vidders weren't ruining the show for me. The music was great, and her vocals remain great. And when doesn't authentic anger help punk? But on watching back youtube videos of it later (taken by people safely in the REAR of the theater), I had to accept, all of that did harsh the vibe pretty heavily.

She should have just done the Dylan thing and prohibited phones in the theaters this tour, if she hates vidding that much.

08.18 Joss Stone @ Fillmore (San Francisco)

Saw Joss June 5th (and last August as well), and, of course, just the opposite. A study in contrasts. You couldn't ask for a more warm and gracious woman. She just radiates light and good will... and all while being funky, too!

Of course, Joss didn't start off playing punk with future members of the Damned, the Clash, and the Sex Pistols. Joss has never been treated like meat by a biker gang.

It takes all kinds of people and life experiences to bring the world so much great and such varied music.

You're going to love it. I don't think they've done a bad show this tour. Even the show where Ed was getting sick the band picked up the slack. Mike McCready is a stellar guitar player. The rest of the band is at the top of their game too!

I saw Foo Fighters with the Pretenders opening on Sunday. I wasn't going to go but a lady friend wanted to go. The Pretenders were awesome. Chrissie Hynde still has it age 72 & the current band is really good. The Foo Fighters were ok. They played for 3 hours which for me is too much Dave. They were making a ton of money on merch but the prices weren't bad.

She does, and they are. But just curious, has she gotten a grip on her hatred of being vidded from the close rows? See above.

(Sidebar: I think Dave Grohl is a wonderful human being* and advocate for rock n roll. But I never thought the Foos' music, beyond their first album, warranted their apparent popularity.)

* Edit: Damn, that part didn't age well.

Looking forward to it. Elite live band. Love the set list variation. Can’t wait to hear the new songs live. Grass ticket for $81 total is a pretty good deal, too.

She didn't say anything about being filmed. Maybe because it was an hour long opening set. She did make a short speech about the evils of opiates. Can't say anything negative about that. I'm with you on the Foo Fighters records. Still love the first one, it's been songs here & there since then.

I went to an arena show & paid $175. I think all of the tickets were that price except VIP. I was tempted to go to the Montana show but I can't swing it. Enjoy yourself!

I feel the same. But Everlong on their second album is one of their finest songs as widely acknowledged.

I was at the Ed getting sick show (Manchester) the band totally stepped up and Mcready was on fire. It was an 8/10 pearl jam gig but still better than most stuff I saw this year

I was at that one and Dublin. Manchester Eddie fought through it but band was great.

New Order’s proposed Cardiff show yesterday was cancelled at the last minute due to adverse weather forecast. The announcement from the promoter was made sometime after eleven in the morning.

I was already there. The weather wasn’t that bad all day, after all. Some wind, and we got a light shower very late at night, towards midnight, that was all.

Aug 30. Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore with the Guilty Ones. Richmond. $58. Sold out. Venue is an easy one for getting sigs; I'll probably take along my nearly worn-out 1981 Blasters album.

Sep 7. Springsteen & the E Street Band. DC. My first & probably only time in a Bruce pit. $370

Sep 22. Brigitte Calls Me Baby. DC. $34. Depending on the song Wes Leavins' striking voice sounds like Roy Orbison + Morrissey, or Elvis + Orbison + just a dash of Morrissey

Sep. 27. The Beaches. Richmond. Blame her ex. $25

Oct. 21. Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets. DC. $61. Atlantis is only a 450-cap venue. Might see if I can get Labour of Lust and Rockpile signed

Nov 2. The Lemon Twigs. Richmond. $28.

Dec 10. Alicia Witt. Actress (Cybill, Law & Order Crim. Intent, Friday Night Lights, Justified, Walking Dead, Nashville, Twin Peaks, Orange Is the New Black) who also sings. Richmond. $39

_________

At nearly 2/3 way through 2024 I've been to 18 concerts so far this year. My six favorite have been... (caveat: I opted to not spend >$1000 on a Stones pit ticket travel & lodging, and go to a bunch of other local or close shows instead)

Second favorite concert I'll call a tie. Neil Young for the songs. Green Day for the tempo, high energy, and fun.

Fourth favorite:
Bob Dylan plus Robert Plant and Alison Krauss (Willie Nelson was sick)

Fifth and Sixth favorite:
The Feelies
Joss Stone

My favorite of the 18 concerts:

Chappell Roan

She's for real. A pop girly so good she stands apart from that whole crowd and even this old rock n roll guy has to respect and admire her music.

This is her most lightweight bubblegummy song off Midwest Princess, and intentionally so... a song with a dance written specifically for crowd participation. Aug 20 in LA, cameoing at a friend's arena concert:

9 shows left:

Psychedelic Furs - 13 September, Barcelona
Bob Dylan - 05 October, Prague
Nick Cave &TBS- 10 October, Lodz
Duff McKagan - 13 October Warsaw
Alice Cooper + Primal Scream - 18 October, Leeds
Einsturzende Neubauten - 21 October, Warsaw
Danny Elfman - 11 December, London (with meet and greet)
Danny Elfman - 12 December, London
Danny Elfman - 14 December, Paris (with meet and greet)

Closing 2024 with 30 beautiful and very special gigs.

I have made some calculations out of curiosity. My 30 concerts is the equivalent of 2 shows of The Stones in the States (including accommodation, flights from the EU to the USA and back, a flight between one state to another, taxis from and to the airports, VIP Pit EE tickets - front row is quite important to me, personally).

I didn't get back into seeing live music a lot until a decade ago. I wish I had a few years earlier and seen one of these shows. I saw Faces just 1X, when I was 18. 1973, Tetsu had just recently come on.
