Beth Gibbons (support: Bill Ryder-Jones)

Gibbons has just released the debut solo album.
Never seen Portishead in person. They rarely played live after 2014. Hopefully this will be something more than the ‘next best thing’.

Saw her two weeks ago in Zürich, it was absolutely great (great musicians) and she did the whole new album. Only very short show, just over one hour. Enjoy it!

sjouke

Yep, the show was brilliant.
And certainly more than a substitute for Portishead.

Valerie June tonight at the Music Instrument Museum, Phoenix, AZ. A 300 seat auditorium with perfect acoustics. It's spoiled me for how to hear a performer or band. Regarding Miss June, she is her own person and well worth discovering.

I missed her in a small venue in Norfolk not long ago. Shame on me, she's fantastic.

Next concert: The Raveonettes, the Danish duo, tonight in DC.

After several years of not touring, technically an anniversary tour for Whip It On, but they're playing a lot from Chain Gang of Love and Lust Lust Lust as well. Their setlist from Chicago two nights ago: [www.setlist.fm]

Another band I never understood why they weren't more popular. That means though I get to see them in a smaller venue.

Who, I'll say again, would be an ideal opener for a Stones concert and it's aggravating AF she's never gotten one of the slots.

Re Valerie June at the Music Instrument Museum (see my previous entry), one of the most interesting, unique, music/art performances I've ever seen. She performed solo and took the audience on a journey through life, various genres of music, a journey all were invited to follow and join. She is something and if you get the chance to experience her, please do.

Same in DC. Short tour, only 10 cities, 11 shows, and they hadn't played over here in years. They're both only 50, I'm glad theyre doing some shows again. They seem to be enjoying it; behind the venue as they were taking in the night air and Sharin had a smoke they were gracious and friendly and signed three cd inserts.

It dawned on me why the duo's positions on-stage are fairly widely separated: Sharin's 6 feet tall. Sune's not. (They hadn't heard of Chappell Roan yet. Everyone's destined to and I'm still on that buzz. See her Bonnaroo set from last Sunday and her Jimmy Fallon show interview and appearance last Thursday, as she morphs from a black swan to a white one). I suggested -- after praising the Raveonettes own music, of course! -- they might give her a look.)

Next up is Jenny Lewis tonight, in Richmond.

Then on Wednesday in Virginia Beach Bob Dylan, Plant & Krause, and Willie Nelson if he's able. If he's still unwell, Lukas will lead the "Willie Nelson and Family" part.

June 24th edit:

To close her show last night Jenny Lewis on her last song, Acid Tongue, thrilled us by introducing a very special guest to help out.
[youtu.be]
So, c'mon Mick, time to step it up! How hard can it be to book Gaga, Stevie, or Macca for a Hackney Diamonds cameo if Jenny Lewis can land the great and mighty Sawborg Destructo?!

(GWAR is a Richmond band. Uncharacteristically, no vomit, blood, or semen were spewed from the stage in the performance of this song.)

Good band descriptor above! I'll be there, too, but am not anticipating a "trashy" band. lol Off to Lake Cowichan in early August to see Keith Urban. Laketown Ranch is a great outdoor venue.

I saw Drive-by Truckers' Southern Rock Opera Redux show last night. It was something of a departure as they usually don't work off of a setlist. Still good though. When in doubt always go to the rock show.

Janelle Monáe smashed it in Manchester last night. Had never seen her before, and her performance, backed up by five consummate musicians and two highly trained dancers, was so astonishing that she/they (a self-proclaimed non-binary that Monáe is) almost gave me an impression that this multifaceted personality was a rebirth of Prince when he was on top of his game albeit in opposite sex. So talented. So artistic. And so sexy.
It was the second night of her three-day residency at the Aviva Studios, the brand new high-tech facilities and headquarters of Factory International, as part of the annual Manchester International Festival (MIF). A must-see if you have a chance. I would certainly go see her tonight again if it didn’t clash with The National at the Castlefield Bowl (hello yorkshirestone).

The National in Manchester on Thursday. A 2-hr and 20-min drama enhanced rather than hampered by occasional showers that got hardest during the encore on Mr. November, one of their most renowned, signature tunes, and the next couple of songs, on the day of the UK general election as well as the American Independence (both were mentioned onstage by Matt Berninger, the professor-looking singer, if I understood English correctly).

Berninger — “Your hometown inspired me more than any other places in the world. The Stone Roses. Oasis. Joy Division [the biggest applause ensued here]. New Order.”

Another 5-star review from Manchester Evening News following the Janelle Monáe gig that simultaneously was happening nearby (only 5-min walk between the two venues).

Speaking of Monáe, she covered Moonage Daydream as an added encore song on her final and third night in Manchester, the same day of the TN gig — surely I thought she reminded me of Bowie, especially in his “Ziggy” phase, in the way she presented herself onstage.

Will see TN again in Edinburgh next Thursday — at the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, another atmospheric setting where the Military Tattoo, the city’s summer staple event, is held.
