See, that's my point. I think us younger fans have a bigger appreciation for their latter-day stuff than the older fans. We are the ones who tend to love the more recent releases. There are exceptions on here, but most prefer the older and/or golden periods.
as a younger fan i'm in total agreement with you
I do agree on that. Songs like Almost hear you sigh, Love is strong, Slipping Away, Thru and Thru, Out of Control, Saint of me, Stealing my heart, Don't Stop etc. are absolute gems.
But to be fair, I was 18 when ABB was released. Loved it back then. But no song really sticks to me anymore. I still listen to VL, B2B etc. But I tried a while back to listen to ABB a few times... it's not modern, it's not old... it's almost nothing. So sry to say it from a younger fan but ABB for me have travelled from a strong album to one of their weakest.

Am I the only one on here who hasn't read any of the reviews? Still haven't listened to SSOH because I don't want to detract from my enjoyment of the album in its entirety as a listening experience. I don't want to read lyrics or others' opinions and be swayed - pun intended.
Haha, I am way too curious to have such a stoic attitude. No patience here. I read and listen everything I have an access to.
But at the same time it is an interesting experiment we are going through now. To have all those reviews way beforehand the album. Of the songs I have not heard yet I start to have a pretty good grasp what sort of songs they are like. I don't care how the reviewers evaluate the songs (that's my job), but taking the 'formal' descriptive hints of them plus all that experience of listening this band so long. You know, a country song, a dance song, Keith's song, etc. So it will be interesting to compare the actual song to the picture I already have of it.
At the moment the only song I have no really idea what is supposed to be like is "The Sword" tune. I have different ideas of it.

I think this is a fair assessment. Their last 2 albums (ABB & B&L) I rarely listen to. There are some good songs on ABB, but the overall quality of the product compared to VL and B2B just isn't there. And the overall production and Mick's vocals on B&L just never got it off the ground for me.

Triggered by this post (and the upcoming release of the new album) I thought it would be a good idea to listen to ABB, so I have a good 'reference point' from where they left us in 2005. I listened to the vinyl version out of the Studio albums box. First of all: I was surprised how bad the vinyl sounded! This is really a bad mastered or recorded album (at least on vinyl). Very thin sounding, very digital and compressed. Very hard to listen to the whole thing in one session.
The songs are not that bad as I remembered it from last time I listened to them. The problem with ABB in my opinion, is that it is just too long. When songs like Streets of Love, This place is empty, Driving too Fast, Infamy where excluded, it would be a lot better.
I know I'm in the minority, but I really like Sweet Neo Con. Laugh I nearly died and It won't take long are the best song of the album for me. Not a bad effort though, and also underrated when I listen to it now in retrospect.
Now I'm ready for what's to come

I have read something, however, not too much. But I have not listened to any of the two released songs, in other to obtain a whole album as a completely new experience.

Very same as yourself Gerard (some Irish connection?). I know we are super fans here, and are likely to find the gold in even the most maligned of albums, but they are my favourite act simply as I do enjoy or love almost every album.
Satanic I've always loved; musically rich and varied. Not deluded enough to place it as a misunderstood classic: however, it is one I have been revisiting and enjoying for 30 years now.
Ditto Dirty Work - the great divider. Hailed by some as the great emancipator (breaking free of critical consensus to declare an almost contrarian undying love of this opus!). I wouldn't see it in those grand terms, but it is a record where at least 5 of its tracks are very good, even moments of the old greatness.
Hackney Diamonds will be praised. IF it turns out to be the last album, its sheen will remain as it will suit the 3rd act narrative- "years in the recorded wilderness, but they finished on form". The die hard will be the ones who keep revisiting, who discuss for years after, no different to Voodoo, Babylon or ABB.
I have expectation this will be a high quality album. Likely will surpass ABB, and hopefully equals or even betters Wheels & Babylon (Steel Wheels is one of the main latter day records I've come to really love over the years).
Whatever the critics say, it is a wonderful time to be a fan - a brand new album in just under 2 weeks, possible live dates 2024. Sixty years after their first single. Long Live the Stones!

Don’t know if anyone here listened to Howard Stern’s interview with Keith, but they played brief snippets of Rollin Stone and Live by the Sword. Wow, their rendition or Rollin Stone gave me the chills. Really looking forward to hearing the full song.

I am 76 years old, and Stones fan since 1963.
I had and brain attack 2 years ago, fortunately I have recovered well from it so far. I also enjoy life more now, I appreciate it more. It's a gift that I was able to experience this from the Rolling Stones. 80 years old and still so much energy and guitars and voice. His voice fits so much into the 60s, unbelievable, I never cared about lyrics or key G or comparison with previous songs, For me it was all about the feeling and emotion. The urge to just listen back again and again, that's the magic. Just enjoying it. And that they even almost have a 2nd album ready to go. I can't wait until the 20th.

on a side note (but not so aside): I hope all the posters that got banned recently are back in time to share views and reviews of the new album
