As much as I love UNDERCOVER, could it have been better if they'd taken 2 more years to work on it? Would what was done in 1985-86 had been better if it had rolled over into 1986-1989?

Yes. And Mick Taylor and Bill are guesting on a couple cuts. They also found some Brian Jones ocarina work they didn't use. New technology has enabled them to blend it into a new song.

the album is either nearly done or half done lots of mixed signals from keith recently
either way seems like it's not coming soon
in the meantime el mocambo 77 is likley being released in early may
and keith just re-released main offender with a whole winos show from london in 1992
oh and msg 2002 is being released at somepoint in the near future too i think

Most of us here have been asking the same question since 2006. Loads of hints and vague comments from the band - Mick and Keith basically - throughout that time, saying they are working on stuff. But nothing has appeared, except, of course, the rather wonderful Blue & Lonesome five years back. An album which almost happened overnight. All cover versions which they knocked out in a couple of sessions when they had writers block regarding new material they were trying to write.
Will there be a new studio album of new originals? Basically no idea! We have all tried to become experts at reading the signals coming out of the band. Trying to decode the language used, and the circumstances under which each comment was made. Of course band members are asked endlessly about new material, and understandably they don't really want to say 'no there won't be any'. Problem is, anything that is not a direct 'no' is portrayed as a firm 'yes. At least by the various reporters the band talks to.
My apologies for this very long response to your beautifully succinct question. In summary - I have absolutely no idea...

I'm not sure what Gerard means by the reference to 2006, possibly he meant 2016 when the last newly recorded Rolling Stones album was released. Since then there was a new single in 2020 and reworked studio outtakes with re-cut vocals, guitars, etc. and newly written lyrics on the reissued GOATS HEAD SOUP and TATTOO YOU released in 2020 and 2021. The band is surprisingly active considering the two original members are pushing 80 years old.

That sounds like a plan...yeah, surely they could string together something releasable using Keith's 3 dynamite riffs and a cut and paste of lyrics from Mick's 100 and counting unreleased songs ! I guess they just can't be bothered ?

My reference to 2006 related to A Bigger Bang which was released then, and the hopes many of us had that something else would follow it pretty quickly. ABB was a very decent album and suggested the old creative vibe was alive and well in the band.
Sadly nothing really happened, studio-wise, until Lonesome and Blue in 2016 of course. Also a decent album and one I have a great deal of time for.

Perhaps they should forget about a new album and release a couple of singles each year (for as long as the band continues) like they did in the 60s.
They could then play them live on their endless tour to spice up their predictable setlist.

Whatever the delay has been up to this point, I have to believe it's very difficult for them to sit in a room and listen to drum parts laid down by Charlie and really want to move forward with finishing the album, but that's just my own 2 cents. I know I'd have a hard time with it. You could see them being emotional onstage when they talked about him.
